Homicide Investigation Underway After Part Of Human Skull Found On Griffith Park Trail
A homicide investigation was underway Sunday after parts of a human skull, thought to be several years old, were found by hikers on a trail in Griffith Park Saturday. The coroner's office was summoned a little after 3 p.m. Saturday, after the grisly find was made on the Brush Canyon Trail near Bronson Canyon, authorities said. KCAL9's Jennifer Kastner reported the hikers found the top of the skull to the nose. Parts of the park were expected to be closed on Sunday for the investigation. Defense To Target DNA Evidence In ‘Grim Sleeper' Serial Killing Trial
The attorney for a man charged with killing nine women and a 15-year-old girl in the “Grim Sleeper” case in Los Angeles seeks to cast doubt in the minds of jurors Monday by focusing on DNA evidence found on the victims. Lonnie Franklin Jr., 63, has pleaded not guilty to 10 murders between 1985 and 2007 in one of the city's most notorious serial killer cases. The Grim Sleeper nickname was coined because of an apparent 14-year gap in the murders between 1988 and 2002. Police have dueling theories about the gap. Some think the killings stopped after one intended victim survived in 1988, scaring off the attacker. Other investigators believe there were more victims but their bodies just weren't found.

Who gets to see police body camera footage? State lawmakers may decide this year
With police departments across California continuing to equip their officers with body cameras, state lawmakers are trying again to set rules for their use, including one of the thorniest policy issues: who gets to see the footage and when. The debate will force legislators to weigh deep transparency and privacy concerns that don't have clear ideological answers, as is evidenced in the details that have emerged from two competing bills within the Democratic caucus.

Crenshaw Residents Protest Dangerous Palm Fronds
When you think Southern California, you think palm trees. The staple of the Los Angeles skyline is worrying various South LA residents, however, as falling pieces of the trees are turning out to be dangerous. Fronds weighing up to two pounds and measuring up to six feet in length have been falling from palm trees both during and after storms. Two years ago, a man from East LA was killed by a falling frond. "I felt something hit me in the head and I was like, 'What happened?' It was the palm tree branch that flew off the tree," Geneshia Tillet said. Crenshaw District residents said they were taking matters into their own hands in hopes that no other bystanders or pedestrians could be hurt by the fronds.

Report outlines L.A.'s options for funding fight against homelessness
Borrowing money or establishing a new tax would be the most effective ways for Los Angeles city officials to raise the money needed to carry out an ambitious plan for reducing homelessness, according to a report issued Friday by city analysts. The report from City Administrative Officer Miguel Santana and Chief Legislative Analyst Sharon Tso found that issuing a bond, increasing the sales tax or raising the documentary transfer tax would be the most lucrative measures the city could adopt to fund services and long-term housing for tens of thousands of homeless men and women.
