Suspect in Custody After 1 San Diego Officer Killed, 1 Wounded
A San Diego Police Department officer has died and another officer remains hospitalized after a late-night shooting during a traffic stop just south of downtown San Diego. Both officers are part of the force's Elite Gang Unit. The SDPD said one suspect is in custody and authorities continue to search for other possible suspects. At a press conference early Friday morning, SDPD Chief Shelley Zimmerman said the officers were conducting the traffic stop shortly before 11 p.m. Thursday in the city's Southcrest neighborhood when they were fired upon.

Man who allegedly opened fire on Oakland cop is arrested
A gunman arrested Thursday for opening fire on an Oakland police sergeant told investigators he was emboldened by recent violence against law enforcement officers as tensions have increased nationwide over issues of race and policing, officials said. The man, an Oakland resident who was not immediately named, “made statements” that he targeted Sgt. Nadia Clark solely because she was a police sergeant in uniform, said Lt. Roland Holmgren, head of the Oakland Police Department homicide unit.

Chinatown rec center basketball coach charged with molesting teen player
A Chinatown area basketball coach has been charged with sexually abusing a teenage player on multiple occasions, Los Angeles County prosecutors said Thursday. Tony Wong, 61, described by authorities as a respected coach at the Alpine Recreation Center in Chinatown, was arrested Wednesday by Los Angeles Police detectives. He was charged with 12 counts of a lewd act on a child who was 14 or 15. Prosecutors say the sexual abuse occurred between Jan. 1, 2004, and Aug. 4, 2004.
