LAPD cop raises over $60K for teen whose mother has terminal cancer
A Los Angeles Police Department officer is being celebrated after raising tens of thousands of dollars for two children whose mother is in hospice care after a stage 4 cancer diagnosis. Inside Edition reported officer Ken Lew had been patrolling an unfamiliar neighborhood when he approached a parked car and found 17-year-old Ariel Carmona sobbing inside. Lew asked him why, and Ariel shared his family's story. After his mother, Marcela, was diagnosed with cancer, she had to quit her job and was eventually moved into hospice care.

4 Men Injured, 2 Critically, By Pickup Truck In Macarthur Park 'Accident,' LAPD Says
Four men were injured, two critically, when they were struck by a pickup truck Thursday afternoon in MacArthur Park in the Westlake District, authorities said.  The crash was reported at around 12:40 p.m. in the 600 block of Park View Street, where the four victims -- ranging in age from 24 to 35 -- were hit while sitting on the lawn, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

LAPD Tries to Mend Wounds in South LA
LAPD records show violent crime is up 15 percent from this time last year, and they're quick to point out there's always a spike in July and August. But in the last month, they say they've seen a small drop – 2 percent – and they hope it's a trend. John Cádiz Klemack reports for the NBC4 News.

Ex-LAPD captain settles retaliation lawsuit with city
A former LAPD captain and the city settled his lawsuit alleging he was forced to retire early out of fear of retaliation for bucking the chief's orders to recommend firing any officer who appeared before a Board of Rights hearing. Justice had reservations about the order because he believed all officers accused of misconduct were entitled to a fair hearing before a BOR panel, which usually consists of two LAPD staff of the rank of captain or higher and one civilian, according to his court papers.

LAPD To Crack Down On Traffic Violators To Help Make Intersections Safer

Los Angeles police will crack down on traffic-law violators Friday as part of an effort to make some intersections safer. Officers will conduct a Directed Enforcement Task Force (DETF) operation at various intersections in the city's South Bureau. “The goal of the DETF is to reduce the number of traffic collisions at specific intersections that have the highest incident of fatalities, severe or visible injuries through education and enforcement,”LAPD Lt. Dave Ferry said in a statement.

Demonstrators call on D.A. to decide whether to prosecute LAPD officers who shot Ezell Ford
It was two years ago when Ezell Ford, a mentally ill black man, was killed by two Los Angeles police officers in South L.A., sparking protests and debate over the use of deadly force by police. A group of protesters on Thursday marked the second anniversary of the killing by gathering outside the downtown Los Angeles office of Dist. Atty. Jackie Lacey, saying they were done waiting for her to decide whether to file criminal charges against the officers and calling on her to prosecute them.

Young Girl Stabbed to Death In Pico Rivera Authorities are investigating the stabbing death of a juvenile girl in Pico Rivera Friday morning.  Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department homicide detectives responded to the 9800 block of Shade Lane. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.  Authorities did not say how old the victim was or whether she was found dead inside a home.

Probation statistics show increase in use of force at L.A. County juvenile halls
Use-of-force incidents at Los Angeles County juvenile halls have increased in recent months, but probation officials say it's unclear what's behind the rise. Overall, monthly use of force incidents increased by 85%, from 55 to 102, at the three county-run juvenile halls — Central Juvenile Hall in Boyle Heights, Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall in Downey and Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall in Sylmar — from January to July, statistics released Thursday by the L.A. County Probation Department show.

Public opinion pendulum swings as rape bills counter Gov. Brown's criminal reform
In the wake of a Stanford student convicted of raping an unconscious woman only getting a six month sentence, two bills have been proposed in the California legislature.  One bill, Assembly Bill 2888 would require mandatory minimum sentencing for anyone convicted of raping an unconscious and intoxicated person and removing probation as a sentencing option. The other, Assembly Bill 29, would require that anyone convicted of committing such a crime serve a full sentence without getting any time off for good behavior.

California State Auditor: Flaws rampant in gang database
In a report released this morning, the California State Auditor harshly criticized management, oversight and use of the CalGang database, which tracks people with alleged gang ties across the state. The 115-page report found inaccuracy rates of over 20 percent for individual gang criteria, a total lack of oversight and transparency, hundreds of people whose entries had not been purged from the system in the mandated five-year timeframe, and a failure to follow a 2013 law requiring that juveniles – and their guardians – be notified when they are included in CalGang.

AAA study: Road debris causing death, accidents
In Los Angeles County, there are approximately 527 miles of freeway, 382 miles of conventional  highways  and more ladders, appliances and mattresses than you can imagine.These  road  hazards can be very dangerous, according to a new report from the AAA Foundation for Traffic, which found some startling statistics.

DOJ to require tracking of fatal police encounters under new system
The Justice Department announced this week that it is rolling out a new program that requires law enforcement agencies and medical examiner's offices to fill out forms tracking “arrest-related deaths” of civilians during police-citizen encounters.  According to the Guardian, the proposed system, which would cover 19,450 state and local law enforcement agencies and about 685 medical examiner's or coroner's offices, will require them to submit one report this year and quarterly reports beginning next year.

Off-duty NYC cop alerts Wis. police about online threat
An off-duty New York City policeman is credited with alerting Wisconsin law enforcement about online threats to kill an officer. Officer Gregory Santora contacted police in Madison, Wisconsin, after spotting a Periscope video at home on Saturday. In the video, a man was "implying that he was going to livestream the shooting of the police officers," Santora told New York's Daily News. "That's what really got me scared."

City of Los Angeles Ordered to Change Parking Ticket Dispute Process
The California Court of Appeal has ordered the City of Los Angeles to change the way it handles parking ticket disputes. A three-judge panel said the city can no longer outsource the handling of the initial reviews of parking tickets requested by motorists, but must do those reviews themselves.

GPS Sensors Could Cut Down Number Of LA Street-Sweeping Tickets
New GPS sensors that can track when a street has already been swept could help Angelenos escape the scourge of the ever-present threat of a street-sweeping parking ticket. The GPS sensors were installed to help city officials determine the most efficient sweeping routes, but Bureau of Street Services officials are also following a recommendation by a “parking reform” task force to use the data to reduce the issuance of unnecessary street sweeping-related parking citations.

Crews rescue injured man at top of 270-foot crane in DTLA
A 50-year-old man who suffered an injury Thursday while atop a 270-foot crane in downtown Los Angeles was rescued in a helicopter hoist operation. Rescuers were sent about 1:30 p.m. to 825 S. Hill St., according to Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department. Paramedics made their way to the man before he was hoisted into helicopter, she said.

Hollywood mega-projects could be built sooner if Gov. Brown signs measure passed Thursday
An effort to speed up construction of mega-projects in California — which would likely include four major developments in Los Angeles — passed the state Legislature Thursday and now moves to Gov. Jerry Brown's desk. The bill aims to make potential lawsuits under the state's main environmental law governing development wrap up within nine months.
