Off-Duty L.A. Police Officer Hurt In Motorcycle Crash In Orange County
An off-duty Los Angeles police officer is in serious condition after being struck by an SUV while riding his motorcycle in Fullerton. The crash happened on Commonwealth Avenue at Basque Avenue about 10:50 p.m. Monday, said Fullerton police Sgt. Jon Radus. The rookie officer, whose name was withheld, has been working for the LAPD for less than a year and was assigned to the department's Wilshire station, according to Officer Mike Lopez of the LAPD.

Tustin PD Cmdr. Kat Thomas loves it all. The sights and sounds of the police department evoke feelings in Thomas that confirm she is exactly where she is supposed to be. “It makes me realize I'm not done yet,” Thomas said. Thomas briefly thought she might be ready to retire and return to a career as a marriage and family therapist. But after 21 years with the Los Angeles Police Department, Thomas instead decided to take on the challenge of a new role: Tustin PD's newest civilian commander, a position she started July 11.

Body armor-clad San Fernando Valley men charged with carrying assault rifles Two San Fernando Valley men who allegedly paraded around an Inglewood neighborhood armed and wearing camouflage and body armor have been charged with carrying assault rifles, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said Tuesday. Edmon Adonis Washington, 35, of Panorama City and Brook Thomas Lindsey, 30, of Encino were each charged with one felony count of possession of an assault weapon, a Hi-Point semi-automatic assault rifle, authorities said.

Los Angeles Mother Arrested on Suspicion of Killing Her 11-Year-Old Son
A 39-year-old mother was arrested in connection with the death of her son on Tuesday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Veronica Aguilar is accused of child endangerment resulting in death, police said. Rampart Patrol officers were called to a home in the 2100 block of Santa Ynez Street around 2:15 p.m. on Monday. When officers arrived Jose Pinzon, Aguilar's husband, said that his wife told him that her 11-year-old son was dead.

Two Sought in Kidnapping of Children Whose Mother Was Found Dead
One of the two people sought in a kidnapping of three young children is the sister of their mother whose body was found on a road north of Los Angeles two weeks ago. Detectives on Tuesday sought the public's help to find Joshua Robertson and Brittany Humphrey in the kidnapping of the children, ages 2, 3, and 5. The two are also wanted in the questioning of the children's mother, Kimberly Harvill, whose body was found on a remote road in the Grapevine on Sunday.

LAPD to create program to reach out to families of people killed by police
The Los Angeles Police Department will create a novel program to reach out to the families of people killed during encounters with officers and help them navigate the often-complicated aftermath of such incidents, officials announced Tuesday. Details about the so-called Family Liaison Program are still being worked out, however the president of the civilian board that oversees the LAPD said the goal was to better communicate with relatives of those who are killed by police or died while in the LAPD's custody.

Trial date under discussions in corruption case against ex-LA Sheriff Baca
A potential trial date is expected to be discussed Wednesday in the case of former Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca, who faces charges of conspiring to obstruct a federal probe into misconduct by jail deputies. Baca pleaded not guilty to federal counts of conspiring to obstruct justice, obstructing justice and lying to the federal government, stemming from his alleged response in 2011 to a covert FBI investigation into corruption and brutality by guards at Men's Central Jail.

Investigators are calling it modern slavery. A taskforce of local, state and federal agencies assembled by the Ventura County Sheriff's Department uncovered an elaborate network that allegedly delivered millions of dollars in wire transfers to China. The business was human trafficking. Women from Fresno to San Diego were forced to have sex with 20 to 30 men a day.

Debate: Under CA bill, minors would be shielded from prostitution charges
Two bills are going through the state legislature that would protect minors from being prosecuted for prostitution. SB 1322 would forbid law enforcement from arresting or charging people under 18 for prostitution, while SB 1129 would eliminate minimum sentences for repeat offenders.

Los Angeles court warns of juror scam
Scammers are trying to con Los Angeles County residents out of cash by calling and posing as sheriff's deputies who demand thousands of dollars to clear up non-existent warrants, court officials warned Tuesday. The scammers tell victims that they are in contempt of court for missing jury service and a warrant has been issued for their arrest, according to Los Angeles Superior Court officials.

Stanford Judge Reignites Debate After Leaving Other Sex Case
The Northern California judge who sentenced a former Stanford University swimmer to six months in jail for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman has reignited debate about his ability to serve on the bench after removing himself from a separate sex-crimes case. Santa Clara County Judge Aaron Persky formally recused himself Monday from deciding whether to reduce a San Jose plumber's felony child pornography charges to misdemeanors.

California may become a marijuana 'epicenter,' with pot a $6.5 billion market here by 2020
If Californians legalize marijuana under Proposition 64 in November, legal cannabis sales in the state likely will climb by $1.6 billion within the first year of implementation, according to a report released Tuesday. That would put the state's medical and recreational market on track to hit $6.5 billion in revenue by 2020 – up from $2.8 billion in 2015, industry research firms Arcview Group and New Frontier state in the report.

L.A. City Council urges Gov. Brown to declare homelessness a statewide emergency
The Los Angeles City Council joined state lawmakers today in urging Gov. Jerry Brown to declare homelessness a statewide emergency, an action that would fast-track assistance and housing for indigent residents. The council approved a resolution supporting HR 56 and SR 84, two bills in the state legislature that urges Brown to apply this tool to homelessness. City officials say there are more than 115,000 homeless people in California, 28,000 of whom are in Los Angeles, and that homelessness is straining local government agencies' ability to offer public safety and social services.

NFL Return to Coliseum Also Brings Back Grandstand Brawls
Something else returned to Los Angeles with the Rams: NFL stadium brawls. "When you include alcohol, adrenaline, especially football, things like that tend to happen. It's pretty foreseeable," said attorney and NFL fan Armen Yeghiayan, whose Coliseum seating Saturday turned out be right in front of where a fight broke out during the second quarter of the Rams-Chiefs game. On homecoming day a week earlier, Los Angeles Police reported ejecting seven from the Coliseum and arresting three.
