Editorial:  No more freebies for the Rams
With all the celebrating and backslapping by city leaders on the return of professional football to Los Angeles, apparently somebody forgot to figure out who's going to pay for all the security around the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.  Last week, former City Councilman  Dennis Zine attempted to force the issue by filing a lawsuit  to block the city and LAPD Chief Charlie Beck from spending any more tax dollars on security until the city is reimbursed and the team agrees to foot the bill in the future.  It's not good policy to pull officers from their duties to provide security at a private, for-profit event. Nor is it fair to stick taxpayers with the bill.

Man killed in 'walk-up' shooting in Boyle Heights
5-year-old man was killed early Sunday in a “walk-up" shooting in Boyle Heights that police said was gang-related. The homicide comes as some fear a return to what one community leader called the “bad old days,” when Boyle Heights had a much higher crime rate. The number of people shot so far this year in the LAPD's Hollenbeck Division, which patrols Boyle Heights and surrounding neighborhoods, is more than double the amount reported over the same period in 2015, according to police.

Portion of LAX evacuated due to traffic stop; 3 auto theft suspects arrested
A "felony stop'' in front of a Los Angeles International Airport terminal Sunday netted a suspected car thief, but created disruption as some people decided to flee the commotion by exiting onto the tarmac. That security breach forced the complete evacuation of LAX Terminal 3 and delayed a small number of flights to and from the airport. About 9 a.m., Los Angeles airport police conducted a "felony vehicle stop'' on the upper ramp in front of Terminal 3 -- an operation that includes officers drawing weapons.

A letter from the Santa Clara Police Officers Association sent to the 49ers was obtained Friday by KPIX. It says that Kaepernick's protest has “threatened our harmonious working relationship” with the 49ers.

With Los Angeles City Councilman Felipe Fuentes leaving, who'll run the district?
Questions are being raised about who will govern the northeast San Fernando Valley when Los Angeles City Councilman Felipe Fuentes leaves office next week. The councilman is stepping down Sept. 11 to take a Sacramento-based lobbying job, a move that leaves the working-class district without elected representation. The other 14 council districts all have representatives, making this Valley district an anomaly. Now, the city is considering putting a so-called “voting member” in charge of District 7, a proposal that's sparking debate in Pacoima, Sylmar, Sunland-Tujunga, and other areas of the district.

L.A. hasn't yet built the 100-story skyscraper, but its skyline is growing again
The last time Los Angeles celebrated the completion of its tallest building, one politician christened the moment with a joke about the city's skyward ambitions at the time. It was 1989, and the skeleton of the 73-story Library Tower — later the First Interstate World Center, now the US Bank Tower — was completed.  Now the 73-story Wilshire Grand has replaced the Library Tower as Los Angeles' tallest, at at 1,100 feet.  This was made official Saturday  with the final installation of a 58-foot, hollow cylinder spire, weighing 20,000 pounds, atop the building.
