Bomb-Sniffing Dogs at LAX on the Front Lines of Passenger Safety
With tens of millions of people flying through Los Angeles International Airport every year, security screeners have their work cut out for them. And that includes the K9s who work with the TSA to sniff out potential explosives. The K9 program at LAX is the largest in the country, and that means plenty of work for dogs like four-year-old Orca. She's a German shorthaired pointer who is trained to detect the odor of explosives, poking her nose around just about everything from passenger luggage to vehicles, cargo facilities and airplane interiors.

Ties are tense between the police and people of Skid Row
The streets of downtown L.A.'s Skid Row are a world like no other, with more than 17,000 people framed together in a space just over 4 square miles.
It's the epicenter of the city's homelessness problem, but it's also home to people who are just out of luck and living in poverty.
And for those trying to get out, some may see a helping hand as a hand ready to slap you down.

In secretive marijuana industry, whispers of abuse and trafficking
In the Emerald Triangle, trees are ever present. They peek over small towns and dip into valleys, sheathing this cluster of remote Northern California counties in silence. For decades, the ancient forests here have provided cover for the nation's largest marijuana-growing industry, shielding pot farmers from convention, outsiders and law enforcement. But the forests also hide secrets, among them young women with stories of sexual abuse and exploitation. Some have spoken out; a handful have pressed charges. Most have confided only in private.
