Woman found shot on South LA street
A woman was shot and wounded this morning in South Los Angeles, police said. The shooting was reported at 4:30 a.m. near the intersection of East 111th Place and Avalon Boulevard. The woman, believed to be between 40 and 50, was found lying in the street with a single gunshot wound to the upper body, said Sgt. Matthew Vuoso of the Los Angeles Police Department's Southeast Division.

'A Sweetheart, a Great Man': Customers Raise Money for Slain Liquor Store Worker
Regular customers and the boss of a North Hollywood liquor store worker remember the 61-year-old father and husband as "generous" and "a sweetheart" after he was shot and killed Saturday night by robbers. Mohammed Kalam, 61, of North Hollywood, was shot in the upper body and died at the scene of a robbery just before midnight at the A&D Liquor Mart on Sherman Way, authorities said.

Man dies in apparent suicide after barricading himself in Sun Valley home
A man who barricaded himself inside a Sun Valley home was found dead of an apparent suicide Tuesday night, Los Angeles police said. The incident began about 10 a.m. Tuesday, when police went to the 7800 block of Coldwater Canyon Avenue for a welfare check on a man who family members said had access to a firearm and was possibly suicidal, Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman Jenny Houser said Tuesday night.

CSUN Student Fights Off Attempted Kidnapper
The Los Angeles Police Department is searching for a man who attempted to kidnap and threatened to kill a female college student on Tuesday. The female victim, a California State University, Northridge student, was walking along Dearborn Street near the college campus when the attempted kidnapping occurred around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Woman in Wheelchair Killed in North Hollywood Hit-and-Run; Driver Sought
Police were searching for a hit-and-run driver who fatally struck a woman in a wheelchair following a crash in North Hollywood early Tuesday morning. The victim was hit about 3:30 a.m. near the intersection of Burbank Boulevard and Bonner Avenue, said Detective Bill Bustos with the Los Angeles Police Department.

LAPD Investigating After Man Punches Woman in Venice; Incident Caught on Video
Los Angeles Police officials are looking for a man who punched a woman in the face outside of a store in Venice over the weekend. The victim apparently had seen the man at a festival in the city on Sunday but she does not know him. She then bumped into him again at a store in the 100 block of Winward Avenue and the two got into an argument. The argument apparently continued outside of the store and surveillance video shows the man punching the woman in the face, knocking her to the ground.

Person Of Interest Named In Hit-And-Run That Killed Singer-Songwriter In Studio City
Police have identified a person of interest in the hit-and-run death of a 65-year-old Studio City man. George Ronald Nicoletti was named a person of interest in the case. Police also released an image of the suspect car, described as a tan four-door 1998 Saturn Ion, California license plate 6HAY595.

LAPD Hopes Newly Released Audio Helps Solve Taxi Driver's Murder 15 Years Ago
Just after midnight June 11, 2001, a man at a pay phone near 91st and Main Streets in South Los Angeles called the Bell Cab Co. for a ride. The cab company sent Hak Choon Chun. Fifteen minutes later, the driver arrived and told dispatch he had picked up a customer. And that was the last communication the 61-year-old had with anyone.

Swiping to find your next playlist or zooming in to pinpoint your proper route on your smartphone will soon be illegal when driving behind the wheel.
Califorina Gov. Jerry Brown signed bill AB 1785 into law Monday, which mandates that any hand-held use of a wireless telephone will become a finable offense in the near future, according to the legislation.

Gov. Brown rejects plan to require family visits for jail inmates
An effort to ban video-only visitation between inmates and families in county jails was rejected Tuesday by Gov. Jerry Brown, who vowed instead to work on options that allow flexibility for local law enforcement needs. Senate Bill 1157 would have required space be made available for family members to visit jailed relatives in person, an option that's not available in as many as 11 California counties. Those counties have instead moved to video visitation.

California outlaws ransomware, but some say catching overseas criminals will be the challenge
Gov. Jerry Brown on Tuesday signed legislation making the use of ransomware a crime in California, following increasing cyberattacks on hospitals, schools and law enforcement agencies across the state and nationwide. The bill, authored by state Sen. Bob Hertzberg (D-Van Nuys), updates the state's penal code, making it a felony to knowingly employ malware or intrusive software that is injected into a computer or network and allows a hacker to hold data hostage until money is paid.

'Veto Gunmageddon' group fails to qualify ballot measures to repeal new gun control laws
Three days before the deadline, the head of a referendum drive aimed at overturning six new gun control laws announced Tuesday it will fall far short of collecting enough signatures to qualify the measures for the ballot. San Diego-area businessman Barry Bahrami, who organized the drive, said apathy among California gun owners and difficult requirements for qualifying referenda are partly to blame for the shortfall.

Ohio cop pulls over grieving man for speeding, drives him 100 miles
After receiving a phone call that his sister had died, Mark Ross was speeding down an Ohio highway to meet his family in Detroit when he was pulled over by Sgt. David Robison. Ross wrote that Sgt. Robison saw the sincerity in his plea and began to pray for him and his family. Because they towed his vehicle due to his outstanding warrant, Sgt. Robison offered to drive Ross 100 miles to Detroit to meet with his family.

Charlotte shooting victim's wife said he threatened family: court papers
Less than a year before Keith Scott was shot and killed by a police officer in Charlotte, North Carolina, his wife said in court papers that he had called himself a "killer" and threatened to kill his family with his gun. Rakeyia Scott sought a domestic violence protective order against her husband on Oct. 5, 2015, in Gaston County, North Carolina, according to a copy of the document posted online by Time Warner Cable News on Tuesday.

L.A. wants to delay when employers may ask about criminal histories
Los Angeles City Council committee voted Tuesday to prohibit most employers in the city from asking about a job applicant's criminal history until after a conditional offer has been made. State and local governments in California are already prevented from asking whether a person has ever been convicted of a crime until an initial offer of employment has been made.

Ousted L.A. fire marshal claims corruption among city fire inspectors
A top Los Angeles Fire Department official is alleging corruption in the city inspection programs he once administered as part of a $5-million retaliation claim filed Tuesday.
Deputy Chief John Vidovich was removed from his post as fire marshal last month after a two-year tenure that was marred by disclosures about delinquent inspections and mounting criticism from the firefighters' labor union.
