Sheriff: Shooter likely knew home targeted belongs to deputy 
A Georgia sheriff says whoever drove by the home of one of his deputies and riddled it with bullets likely knew a law officer lived there because his marked patrol car was parked in the driveway. Douglas County Sheriff Phil Miller said one of the bullets landed in a bed inside the home.

LAPD: Kidnap suspect taken into custody
A 29-year-old man suspected of kidnapping a woman today from a South Los Angeles convenience store was in custody tonight after a short vehicle chase that ended in North Hollywood. Officers took Jose Eduardo Gaxiola Caro into custody around 9:30 p.m. following a vehicle pursuit that ended in a crash, according to Officer Liliana Preciado of the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations Division. Officers used a Taser to get Caro into custody, she said. The details of the crash were not immediately available.

Suspect holds knife to victim's throat prompting police to shoot
A suspect who had held a knife to a victim's throat on Tuesday was shot by an officer and wounded Wednesday when he ran from police who had taken him to County-USC Medical Center for an examination and then carjacked an SUV. No officers were injured in the shooting, which occurred about 3:30 p.m. in the area of Zonal Avenue and Cummings Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. After being shot, the suspect was again taken to a hospital, where he was in stable condition, LAPD Detective Meghan Aguilar told reporters at the scene.

Suspect Caught On Camera Punching Woman Outside Venice Store
Surveillance video outside of a store caught a male suspect punching a woman and knocking her to the ground in Venice. The incident happened Saturday around 7:30 p.m. on Windward Avenue. Surveillance cameras show the suspect suddenly punching the woman as passersby tried stopping him. "The victim and the suspect had some type of verbal argument inside of a store. When the victim exited, the suspect exited, the suspect punched the victim, victim went down," Los Angeles police Officer Alicia Elliott said.

Two Women Arrested After 61-Year-Old Store Clerk Killed in Apparent North Hollywood Robbery
Two women have been arrested in connection with a shooting that claimed the life of a 61-year-old store clerk in North Hollywood over the weekend, LAPD announced Wednesday. Los Angeles Police Department Officer Jenny Houser confirmed the arrests, but did not provide their names or any additional information.

Police Hope Public Can Lead Them To Suspect Who Allegedly Abducted Woman From Convenience Store
Detectives with the LAPD's Southwest Division are hoping the public can lead them to a kidnapping suspect. The suspect allegedly abducted a 28-year-old woman from a convenience store  located at Denker Avenue and Exposition Boulevard Wednesday just before 3 p.m., authorities said. Officers responded to a silent alarm call at the store located in the 3900 block of Denker Avenue.

Police Cruiser Carjacker Killed in Crash
A man who attempted to steal a police cruiser was killed when he crashed the vehicle after struggling with an officer who stopped to provide help on a freeway northeast of downtown Los Angeles. The South Pasadena officer stopped near the eastbound 10 Freeway transition to the 110 Freeway after he noticed a motorcycle on the ground. When he got out to look for the motorcyclist, a man got into his police cruiser, according to authorities.

A woman caught a violent Uber ride near East Hollywood on her cellphone after she told her driver to stop texting while driving. The incident occurred about 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 13 near the intersection of Beverly Boulevard and North New Hampshire Avenue.

Cell Phone Vigilante Tracks Stolen Phone To Library, Confronts Alleged Thief
A cell phone vigilante who had his phone stolen from his car confronted the alleged thief at an Echo Park library and took back his phone, according to a social media post. Reddit user/u/westondeboer said he awoke on a recent day to find his car had been broken into overnight and his phone stolen. He soon began tracking the Android phone's movement with Google's “Android Device Manager” feature.

Woman Injured During Hit-and-Run at South LA Bus Stop Dies
A woman who was critically injured in a hit and run at a South Los Angeles bus stop, where her husband was killed, died at a hospital Wednesday, authorities said. The crash was reported about 6:40 p.m. Monday in the 400 block of West 54th Street, near the Harbor (110) Freeway, where a car collided with a Range Rover that then careened into the bus stop, police said.

Former Undersheriff Paul Tanaka Should Not Remain Out of Prison During Appeal Process: Federal Judge 
A federal judge Wednesday ruled that former Los Angeles County Undersheriff Paul Tanaka should not remain out of prison while he appeals his conviction on obstruction of justice charges. Because Tanaka's attorneys will now appeal the judge's decision, plans that called for Tanaka, 58, to begin serving his five-year sentence next week will be postponed.

CSUN Students On Edge, Urged Not to Walk Alone as Police Search for ‘Brazen' Attempted Kidnapper
The Cal State Northridge chief of police on Wednesday urged students not to walk alone as authorities continued their search for a man who tried to kidnap and threatened to kill a student as she was walking away from campus the day before. The kidnapping attempt occurred Tuesday afternoon on Dearborn Street, about a block west of campus, police Chief Anne Glavin said during a news conference Wednesday.

LA County coroner's office reports progress in reducing backlog of bodies
The head of the Los Angeles County's coroner's office said Tuesday the process of finding qualified people to improve the backlog of unexamined bodies at the morgue is moving along, thanks to an allocation of new funding for more positions.

In Hotel Vandalism Investigation, CHP Pursues Mercedes-Benz From L.A. Toward Bakersfield
CHP officers pursued the driver of a Mercedes-Benz coupe from the West Los Angeles area toward Bakersfield for nearly two hours Wednesday afternoon. The driver was wanted in connection with an investigation into vandalism of a hotel room in Inglewood, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Siara Lund. “We're trying to find out who this person is. … We don't know if there are any firearms in the vehicle,” Lund said. “Hopefully this vehicle will voluntarily stop.”

Will end of death penalty bring campaign against life imprisonment?
If California voters abolish the death penalty this fall, its foes will go after life imprisonment next, proponents of a measure to speed up the capital punishment process warned Wednesday. “Once all those attorneys who have been trying to prevent the death penalty from being enforced have nothing better to do, they're going to turn to life without parole,” Dane Gillette, former chief assistant attorney general of California, told The Sacramento Bee Editorial Board on Tuesday.

Brown signs bill requiring breathalyzers in DUI offenders' cars
Many Californians convicted of driving under the influence will have to temporarily install breathalyzers in their vehicles to get their driver's licenses back after Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation Wednesday expanding a pilot program. Senate Bill 1046 is the result of a four-year effort by Sen. Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo, to get a statewide policy on “ignition interlock devices,” which prevent a car from starting if the driver's blood alcohol content is above the legal limit.

Sex Offenders in California Will Soon Have to Report Email Addresses, Usernames
Sex offenders will soon have to report their email addresses, user names and other Internet identifiers to police under a bill Governor Jerry Brown signed Wednesday. The bill, authored by state Sen. Ben Hueso (D-San Diego), will apply to people convicted on or after Jan. 1, 2017 of Internet-related sex crimes.

LA to pay $3M to rabbi injured riding bike in Van Nuys
The Los Angeles City Council agreed Wednesday to pay $3 million to settle a lawsuit filed by a rabbi who was injured in 2010 while riding his bicycle in Van Nuys. Rabbi Shelaim Furst was riding his bicycle along Victory Boulevard toward Balboa Park on Aug. 25, 2010 when he was hit from behind by a car. Furst, who suffered a traumatic brain injury, sued the city alleging that the street was in poor condition and that misleading bicycle route signs were left up after the street was no longer being designated for bicycles.

$3.5B Los Angeles waste hauling contract approved
Seven waste hauling companies would handle about $3.5 billion in commercial waste hauling business in Los Angeles under recommendations advanced by the Board of Public Works Monday. If the franchise awards are approved by the City Council and Mayor Eric Garcetti, each of the companies would be assigned as the sole trash hauler for commercial sites and multi-family complexes in one or more of the city's 11 zones. The exclusive, 10-year waste hauling franchise rights are set to take effect in July 2017.

Gov. Brown approves citizens redistricting commission for L.A. County Board of Supervisors
Despite opposition from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Gov. Jerry Brown on Wednesday approved a bill that will create a citizens redistricting commission to redraw the panel's district lines after the next U.S. Census. State Sen. Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) said his measure would result in a 14-member, independent, bipartisan group drawing new district maps that are fair and more representative of the county's diversity.
