Palm Springs police shooting suspect captured after 12-hour 'nightmare' for community
Police arrested known gang member John Felix in the killing of two Palm Springs police officers Saturday afternoon. Felix, 26, was captured alive around 12:50 a.m. Sunday morning after a standoff with police lasting 12 hours, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. He is accused of two counts of murder of a peace officer.

Nearly Retired Father of 8 Killed in Line of Duty
Officer Jose Gilbert Vega, 63, was one of two officers fatally shot in Palm Springs on Saturday. Vega, Officer Lesley Zerebny and a third officer responded to a family disturbance call when a suspect opened fire, killing Vega and Zerebny. The third officer was hospitalized and later released.

Slain Palm Springs Officer Had Just Returned From Maternity Leave
Lesley Zerebny, 27, was one of two officers fatally shot in Palm Springs on Saturday.  Zerebny, Officer Jose Gilbert Vega and a third officer responded to a family disturbance call when a suspect opened fire.  Two of the officers — Zerebny and Vega — died shortly after the shooting and the third officer was wounded.

Third Officer Shot In Palm Springs Released From Hospital
According to the Palm Springs Police Department, the third officer who was shot in the attack that killed two other officers has been released from the hospital. The officer is doing well, although the Palm Springs Police are withholding his identity at this time.

Community Gathers To Honor Fallen Palm Springs Police Officers
Hundreds came together in Palm Springs Sunday to share their grief over an unspeakable tragedy involving it's city's police department. Officer Jose “Gil” Gilbert Vega wasn't supposed to be working Saturday, but chose to come in on overtime before responding to a “domestic disturbance” call in Palm Springs, the department's police chief said Sunday.

Family of slain LASD sergeant speaks out
The family of sheriff's Sgt. Steve Owen who was fatally shot while responding to a burglary call in Lancaster this week spoke out Saturday through a public statement, thanking the community for its support. ``We want to say thank you for the love and support you have shown our family as we mourn the loss of our husband, father, brother, uncle, son, and ultimately our HERO, `Sgt. Steve Owen,'" the family said in a statement.

How Could A Sergeant's Alleged Killer Be In A Program That Worked With Parolees?
On Friday, prosecutors filed a capital murder charge against 27-year-old Trenton Lovell for the shooting death of Los Angeles County Sheriff's Sgt. Steven Owen. Authorities say Owen was shot multiple times in Lancaster Wednesday as he confronted Lovell at a burglary call. Sheriff Jim McDonnell called it a “calculated execution.”

Father of suspect in St. Louis cop's killing: 'There are no excuses for what my son did'
Since about 8 a.m. Thursday, Bill Forster has been trying to figure out how the little boy he taught to say, "Thank you for your service," to every police officer and veteran he met allegedly killed a policeman at the age of 18. He remembers officers' telling him they wanted him to be the first to know that his son was in critical condition, that he had just shot and killed a police officer and that he had been shot.

71-year old woman thrown from upper-story apartment window, beaten to death by son
LAPD Van Nuys Homicide detectives are investigating a murder scene at an apartment in the 7000 block of Hazeltine Avenue after a 71-year old woman was reportedly thrown out of a 2nd story window and beaten to death.   The suspect is the woman's son.

Gunman Fires Into Parked Car, Killing Man, Wounding Woman In South Los Angeles
A man walked up to a car parked on a driveway in South Los Angeles and opened fire, killing a man and wounding a woman, sheriff's officials said. The shooting occurred on the 1200 block of West 109th Street in the Westmont area shortly before 3:30 p.m. Thursday, authorities said. After striking both victims, the suspect ran southbound along the driveway onto the street, then westbound on 109th Street.

Shooting Outside Hollywood Nightclub Leaves 1 Hospitalized; 1 Person Detained
One person was hospitalized after being struck by gunfire early Monday morning in a shooting outside a Hollywood nightclub, authorities said. According to a Los Angeles Police Department sergeant at the scene, the incident was the result of an argument that began inside the Tiffany's on Vine nightclub and escalated into gunshots at about 1:45 a.m. in the 1700 block of Vine Street. The condition of the shooting victim, identified only as a male, was not immediately known.

Mechanical Issue Forces LAPD Chopper To Land On School Playground
A Los Angeles police helicopter made a precautionary landing Monday on an elementary school playground near downtown Los Angeles after a reported mechanical issue. The chopper set down shortly after 11 a.m. at the Dr. Sammy Lee Elementary Medical and Health Science Magnet School, said Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) spokeswoman Monica Carazo.

2 Dead, 2 Taken Into Custody in Chatsworth Hit-and-Run Crash
Two people died and two others were taken into custody after a hit-and-run crash in Chatsworth late Friday, officials said. The crash was reported about 10:40 p.m. near the intersection of De Soto Avenue and Chatsworth Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. A black Dodge Ram pick up truck struck a red pick up truck, causing the red truck to turn on its side and a man and woman were trapped inside, said LAPD Detective Bill Bustos.

Brentwood bank robber caught on tape
Authorities are searching for a man who wore a white cap and pendant necklace as he robbed a Brentwood bank Friday. Los Angeles police officers responded about 2 p.m. to the robbery at Comerica Bank in the 12000 block of San Vicente Boulevard, said Officer Tony Im, a spokesman for the department.

Surveillance Footage Shows Man Burglarizing West Adams Animal Shelter
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles is seeking help identifying a thief who broke into the charity's West Adams headquarters last week. The incident occurred the morning of Sept. 29 at 5026 West Jefferson Boulevard. In surveillance video from the incident, the suspect is seen casing the parking structure about 1:35 a.m., then he returns around dawn with tools and breaks into the building, SpcLA officials said in a news release.

Man Who Sucker Punched Woman During Heated Argument in Venice Charged With Battery
A stocky man in a muscle shirt caught on camera sucker punching a woman during a heated argument outside a Venice market has been charged with battery, prosecutors said Friday. Michael Joseph Fino, 44, was charged Thursday with one felony count of battery with serious bodily injury, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. He pleaded not guilty and was scheduled to return to court Nov. 3.

Man fatally struck while crossing street in Panorama City
A pedestrian was fatally struck while crossing the street on North Sepulveda Boulevard in Panorama City Saturday night, Los Angeles police said. Los Angeles Police Department officers initially thought the incident was a hit-and-run but later determined the driver, who had difficulty speaking English, had tried to make contact with officials at the scene. She later walked into the Mission Community Police Station and identified herself, said Officer John Guzman with LAPD's Valley Traffic Division.

Tip to burglars: Don't hit fumigated homes; Suspect in hospital
A house in Sylmar that had been tented for fumigation was hit by a burglar, who was discovered by police, treated by paramedics and taken to a hospital Sunday. Police were first on the scene, at about 8 a.m. today, according to Officer Liliana Preciado of the LAPD's Media Relations Section.

Arson Investigation Underway At Westlake Senior Living Facility
Arson investigators are working to determine the cause of a fire that erupted at a senior living facility in the Westlake community, LAFD Spokesman Erik Scott said Tuesday. The fire erupted shortly before 9 p.m. Monday in the 400 block of South Union Avenue. Upon their arrival to the 15-story high-rise, firefighters were quickly met by multiple challenges.

Man Shoots Himself, Dies After Exchanging Gunfire With Sheriff's Deputy in Norwalk: LASD
A man died after he apparently shot himself following  confrontation with deputies in Norwalk Friday morning, authorities said. The incident began around 9 a.m. in the 10000 block of Firestone Boulevard when dispatchers received a report of a man with a gun, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The armed man — who has only been identified as a 24-year-old Hispanic male — was attempting to break into vehicles in a Target parking lot, deputies said.

Officer Injured in Car Crash During Chase in Glendora
A Glendora police officer suffered minor injuries after a chase suspect crashed into his patrol car Saturday night. Authorities said the chase began around 7:32 p.m. At one point, police said the suspect appeared to purposefully turn his car around and ram the officer's patrol car. The officer also opened fire, but it was unclear if the suspect was hit. The officer suffered minor injuries in the crash and was taken to a local hospital.

Police shootings, scrutiny increase stress for Southern California law enforcement officers  
When Long Beach police Lt. Steve James first heard that three Palm Springs police officers had been gunned down Saturday afternoon, he immediately texted a friend at the desert town department. James, the president of the Long Beach Police Officers Association, endured some tense moments when he believed his friend could have been one of the officers shot. He eventually learned his friend was safe, but two officers — each at opposite ends of their careers — had been killed and a third wounded.

State gains control of Los Angeles-area prison's health care
California is regaining responsibility for providing medical care at an eighth state prison after 10 years of oversight. The federal court-appointed receiver who runs the inmate health care system on Friday gave the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation control over care at the California Institution for Men. The prison houses nearly 3,800 minimum- and medium-security inmates in Chino, about 35 miles east of Los Angeles.

Whittier Couple Caught At Border With Toddler's Body To Be Arraigned In LA
A Whittier couple charged in connection with the discovery of a 2-year-old girl's body in a duffel bag as they were crossing the border into Mexico will be arraigned Friday on felony charges including torture and murder. According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, Mercy Mary Becerra, 43, and Johnny Lewis Hartley, 39, were charged last week with one felony count each of murder, torture and assault on a child causing death involving the toddler.

A 97-year-old woman wore a blood-soaked bandage on her leg. Another nonagenarian woman's bandaged head and a former emergency room surgeon's scrubs were also speckled with blood. Several other seniors lay scattered on the ground. Don't worry: The blood was fake and served only to make a point. The small-but-spirited group of senior activists, known as the Concerned Citizens of Laguna Woods, converged in front of Rep. Mimi Walters' Irvine office Saturday morning to support federal background checks on all gun sales and other gun control regulations.
