Press-Democrat Editorial: No on Prop 57: Too many risks in parole plan
On the Nov. 8 ballot, the governor is proposing another early-release plan — but this time he has gone too far. Proposition 57, if approved, would allow felons sentenced for less-violent crimes to earn early parole by receiving credit for education and good behavior opportunities. It also would allow judges, rather than prosecutors, to decide whether to try certain juveniles as adults. The net effect, law enforcement officials contend, is that more felons will end up back on the streets, putting communities at risk. “The impacts are incalculable,” said Sonoma County District Attorney Jill Ravitch in a meeting with The Press Democrat Editorial Board. “It's a frightening situation.”

Man goes on vandalism spree in Mar Vista, tagging 'anarchy' on cars and homes

By day's end, the officer had drawn up reports on 11 locations while neighbors we spoke with said they believed there were 15 cars, all white, sprayed and as many garages.

Prop. 57 could shorten prison time for thousands of inmates
Proposition 57, potentially the most significant revision of California sentencing laws in 40 years, would allow the state parole board to consider releasing inmates who have served their basic term for a crime the law defines as nonviolent. How many inmates would be eligible depends on whom you ask. And there's quite a difference — one set of numbers, based on the text of Prop. 57, is more than 23 times higher than figures used by the yes on 57 campaign, which says the measure would be enforced much more narrowly.

Fears mount over a homeless plan that residents say will 'end Venice as we know it'
John Moore, a shaggy-haired, full-bearded surfer, Venice resident and launcher of “ethically minded” brands and fashion lines, said he loves the history, diversity and creativity of his neighborhood. “I will help you come up with a solution that is not putting people in my alley, in my frontyard, that could potentially devalue my home and put me and my children in jeopardy,” Moore told City Councilman Mike Bonin at a rancorous community meeting last month. Moore is among the many residents at loggerheads over Bonin's detailed strategy to curb the homeless population in Venice, a beach community that is very much in flux.
