Coroner: 1 Of 2 Pennsylvania Police Officers Shot Has Died
One of two western Pennsylvania police officers "ambushed" and shot while responding to a domestic situation has died, and police are searching for a suspect, authorities said Thursday. Washington County Coroner Tim Warco didn't immediately identify the slain Canonsburg officer pending notification of relatives.

Thousands protest Trump win in Downtown LA; Orange County
Protesters angry over Donald J. Trump's election as president marched in downtown Los Angeles early Thursday and shut down portions of the Hollywood (101) Freeway while in Orange County, police broke up a demonstration that included hurling objects at officers. With the exception of some protesters throwing rocks at officers and vandalizing portions of the freeway, Rubenstein said the protest had been non-violent."The minute you start throwing rocks and the minute you start blocking freeways, that's where things start to ratchet up,'' Rubenstein said. "At the height of the crowd there were thousands but it's certainly dispersed a whole bunch by now.''

18 Arrested in LAPD, DEA Sweep Targeting Gang With Ties to the Mexican Mafia: Authorities
Eighteen members and associates of a violent street gang with ties to the Mexican Mafia were arrested in Los Angeles' Wilmington neighborhood early Wednesday morning, according to police and federal prosecutors. The arrests were part of a larger investigation dubbed “Operation Tidal Wave,” which focused on members of the Wilmas Street gang, which has operated near the city's harbor since the 1950s, said Lt. Chris Ramirez, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department.

L.A. Valley College Locked Down After Reports of Shots Fired; Police Search Showed No Signs of a Shooting
The Los Angeles Police Department swarmed Los Angeles Valley College on Wednesday night after receiving numerous reports of shots being heard on campus, but after a search of the school officers did not find any evidence of a shooting, officials reported. The shots fired calls started rolling in about 6:55 p.m. prompting LAPD officers to descend on the college campus, located in the 5600 block of Fulton Avenue in Van Nuys, an LAPD official said.

Public's Help Sought to Find Double Leg Amputee Reported Missing
Police and worried relatives sought public help Wednesday to find a double leg amputee who went missing in the downtown Los Angeles area. Gerald Lipeles, 64, was last seen about 4 p.m. on Thursday in the 1400 block of Grand Avenue, the Los Angeles Police Department reported. He's described as white, 5 feet 8 inches tall and about 140 pounds, with gray hair and brown eyes.

Getaway Driver in MTV Staffer, Man's Slayings Sentenced
A woman who pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter for being the getaway driver in the robbery-motivated murder of an MTV music coordinator and the killing of another man was sentenced Wednesday to 25 years in state prison. "I just ask for your forgiveness some day,'' a tearful Destiny Young told family members of one of the victims, Gabriel Ben-Meir, who were in court for her sentencing.

Man To Be Sentenced For Trespassing On Model Kendall Jenner's Property
A 25-year-old man convicted of misdemeanor trespassing on the Hollywood Hills property of Kendall Jenner is scheduled to be sentenced Thursday. According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, Shavaughn McKenzie faces a maximum jail term of six months. McKenzie has remained jailed since he was arrested Aug. 14 after approaching Jenner as she waited for the 13-foot-tall gate to her property to close.

Killer dad murders mom after ordered to pay child support
A man was convicted Wednesday of killing his girlfriend in downtown Los Angeles four days after he was ordered to pay child support for their two young children. The Los Angeles Superior Court jury deliberated about 90 minutes before finding Oscar Cedano, 34, guilty of first-degree murder for the Jan. 17, 2014, shooting death of Sonia Soto. Jurors also found true the special circumstance allegations of murder for financial gain and murder while lying in wait.

Suit filed to block death-penalty measure Prop. 66
A day after California voters narrowly approved an initiative aimed at speeding up executions, opponents asked the state Supreme Court to block it from taking effect. Proposition 66 will cause “confusion and upheaval” in the courts, interfere with their authority and force both courts and lawyers into hurried and less-reliable decisions in capital cases, said the suit filed Wednesday by former state Attorney General John Van de Kamp and Ron Briggs, a former El Dorado County supervisor. Briggs' father, state Sen. John Briggs, sponsored the state's current death penalty law as a 1978 ballot measure.

'Suicide by cop' prevented by Calif. police, behavioral health team
A collaboration Monday between Rialto police and the San Bernardino County Department of Behavioral Health helped de-escalate a situation where police say a man was threatening “suicide by cop.” Just before noon, officers were called to a home in the 300 block of East Huff Street by someone stating that a loved one, a 37-year-old man, had threatened to harm himself with a knife and had reportedly made comments that he wanted police to shoot him, according to a police statement.

Atlantic City officer shot in head returns home from rehab
A police officer who was shot in the head responding to a robbery at an Atlantic City casino garage is home. Doctors, nurses and fellow officers cheered Tuesday as Officer Josh Vadell was discharged from the brain injury unit at MossRehab in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania.

City gives tentative approval banning living in cars in certain places
The Los Angeles City Council gave tentative approval Wednesday to a ban of living in cars in residential areas and near parks and daycare facilities. The ordinance would still theoretically allow people who live in their cars to park their vehicles in commercial and industrial zones. City Council members who supported the proposed ordinance said Wednesday that the ban would replace an existing ban that was in effect citywide but was deemed unconstitutional.

L.A. voters make bold bets with new taxes for transit, homelessness
Los Angeles voters were in an especially giving mood. Four major tax measures, clustered near the bottom of the ballot, sailed to victory in Los Angeles on election day, mostly by dizzying margins. Voters embraced $94 million per year for parks, $1.2 billion to house the city's homeless, $3.3 billion for community college facilities and a stunning $120 billion to pay for subways, light rail lines and other transit projects over 40 years.

LA leaders put out ‘welcome mat' for ‘Star Wars' creator's planned museum
Hoping the Force is with the City of Angels, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted Wednesday to endorse and support building the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Exposition Park. Star Wars creator George Lucas is considering Los Angeles for the final destination of his futuristic shaped five-story museum that will include exhibit space, a cafe, theaters and a library.

LA leaders to state: Don't let SoCalGas resume at Aliso Canyon – yet
County supervisors voted Wednesday to press regulators to deny Southern California Gas Co.'s request to resume injecting natural gas into wells at the Aliso Canyon storage facility, where a four-month leak emitted 109,000 metric tons of methane and displaced thousands of residents. Supervisor Michael Antonovich recommended sending a letter to the California Public Utilities Commission and the Division of Oil, Gas and Geothermal Resources asking that no new injections be allowed until regulators complete an analysis of the root cause of the leak.
