Georgia Manhunt After Cop Killed, Second Critical in Shooting Near College
The manhunt for a gunman in Georgia who allegedly killed one police officer and critically injured another intensified Thursday morning with more than 200 law enforcement officers across agencies joining the search.  Minquell Kennedy Lembrick, 32, escaped after the shooting near Georgia Southwestern State University on Wednesday morning, and is considered armed and dangerous, authorities said. Overnight, officials raised the award for Lembrick's arrest to $70,000.

Knife Wielding Man Arrested Following 6 Hour Standoff In South LA
A police standoff came to an end Thursday following a six hour barricade situation with an armed suspect in South Los Angeles. Police were called to a two-story apartment building located in the 200 block of W. 84th Street around 9 p.m. Wednesday for report of an assault with a deadly weapon. The suspect, who was armed with a knife, was arrested at the scene. No injuries were reported.

The families of victims of homicides in South Los Angeles visited the LAPD's 77th Street station on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2016, to hang ornaments on a special Christmas tree.

Public's Help Sought To Find Suspect Who Fatally Stabbed 21-Year-Old Man In Topanga Area
Homicide detectives with the LAPD's West Valley division are hoping the public can lead them to the suspect wanted for the fatal stabbing of a 21-year-old man. On Tuesday, around 8:30 p.m., Topanga Area patrol officers responded to a radio call of an “assault with a deadly weapon” call from a local hospital. When officers arrived, they learned the victim, a Latino, was dropped off at the emergency room with a stab wound. Once inside the ER, the victim died from his injury.

Music Producer Seriously Injured in Hit-And-Run Crash
A music producer was in critical condition Wednesday after he was struck by a dump truck last week in Los Angeles. The crash happened at around 12:30 p.m. Dec. 2 at the intersection of Franklin and Highland avenues. The truck wedged Jason Cole, who was riding his motorcycle, against a car, running over his body and his head. Cole suffered 15 broken bones and is in serious, but stable, condition, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. He also suffered a torn liver, contusion in the lungs, skull fractures and broken ribs.

Hit-and-run bicycle death: Witness fast action helps nab suspect
A suspected hit-and-run driver in the killing  of a bicyclist on the outskirts of downtown Los Angeles has been arrested in Glendale a short time after the deadly crash , police said. Despite the driver's efforts to get away, a witness followed the fleeing driver long enough to record the vehicle's license plate number and report it to authorities. The suspected murdering motorist, a 28-year-old resident of Los Angeles, was detained by police in Glendale, after witnesses reported seeing him wipe debris from the front of his vehicle near a car dealership, according to Officer Edward McGowan of the Los Angeles Police Department's Central Traffic Division.

Man Charged W/ Manslaughter In Accidental Shooting Of Friend In Tarzana
A 20-year-old man suspected of fatally shooting his friend after they had hiked in the hills of Tarzana to test out his handgun was charged with involuntary manslaughter Wednesday. Heriberto Gonzalez was charged with involuntary manslaughter, as well as other felony counts including the discharge of a firearm with gross negligence, during his arraignment hearing in which he pleaded not guilty. An LAPD detective, who submitted the charges against Gonzalez, said it appeared the shooting was an accident.

USC Officer Pleads No Contest to Manslaughter in Crash That Killed Grad Student
A USC Department of Public Safety Officer pleaded no contest Wednesday to a misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter charge for causing a car crash that killed a 23-year-old graduate student. Miguel Guerra, 37, was immediately sentenced to three years probation, 30 days in jail and 45 days of community labor. He was also ordered to pay restitution, but a hearing will be held Feb. 1 to determine the amount, according to Frank Mateljan of the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office.

Corruption Trial For Ex-Sheriff Lee Baca Starts With Fiery Opening Statements
To prosecutors, former Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca was the heart of a conspiracy to block the FBI from investigating jail abuse. To Baca's defense team, the former sheriff was a champion for transparency whose motive for restricting FBI access to the jails was to investigate what he had thought was a rogue operation that threatened jail safety. The competing portrayals come to a jury after the U.S. Attorney's Office has already convicted seven deputies and former Undersheriff Paul Tanaka for obstruction of justice.

Covina Police to Pull Over Law Abiding Drivers, Surprise Them With Gift Card
The Covina Police Department is awarding good drivers with a gift card after receiving a $2,500 donation. The department received a gift of $2,500 from a local school and wanted to return the favor for the holiday season, according to police. Officers will stop drivers who abide by the law and stop for a man dressed as Santa, who will be walking in a crosswalk. "It's something different but it's a way to show 'hey, thank you for paying attention to the rules of the road'," said Sgt. Gregg Peterson.

Driving-while-stoned pot test gets renewed push from Assemblyman Tom Lackey
With recreational cannabis legal in California, state leaders are taking another stab at letting law enforcement test the saliva of people suspected of driving under the influence of marijuana. Assemblyman Tom Lackey, R-Palmdale, this week introduced a bill that would allow officers to take a spit swab from drivers who've failed field sobriety tests. Portable instruments promise to detect the presence of pot and other drugs within minutes, telling officers whether they should potentially let the driver go free or take them to the station for a blood test and possible arrest.

FBI agent arrested after firing gun at Mich. police
Police say an FBI agent has been arrested in western Michigan after firing his gun at a police officer outside a fitness club. No injuries were reported in the shooting at the Planet Fitness in Grand Rapids. Police say the 35-year-old man fired the gun around 1:20 a.m. on Tuesday and was quickly arrested. His name hasn't been released. The FBI acknowledged the agent's arrest and said it is cooperating with Grand Rapids police. The agency declined further comment.

L.A. City Atty. Mike Feuer heads to March election with no opponent; charter school founder drops mayoral bid
Los Angeles City Atty. Mike Feuer won't have an opponent on the March 7 municipal ballot, leaving him all but guaranteed a victory in his bid for a second and final term. No one stepped forward to run against Feuer, who was first elected to the post in 2013. In a statement, Feuer said he is “honored once again to have the opportunity to serve the people of Los Angeles.”

L.A. backs measures to roll back 'mansionization' in single-family neighborhoods
Spurred by years of complaints from neighborhood groups, the Los Angeles City Council voted Wednesday to seek new restrictions on “mansionization” — the practice of constructing houses that are far larger than those nearby. On a 13-0 vote, lawmakers asked City Atty. Mike Feuer to rewrite sections of two city ordinances that regulate the size of new homes in single-family neighborhoods and in hillside areas.

L.A. Plans Crackdown on Unsafe Warehouses in Wake of Oakland Tragedy
In the wake of Oakland's devastating warehouse fire that killed 36 people last week,
Los Angeles city officials will meet next week to determine how to address the city's own unpermitted housing issues, the city attorney's office said. Using a mixed-use building at 931 E. Pico Blvd. as an example of hazards tenants can face, City Atty. Mike Feuer said in an interview that Los Angeles needs to address its housing shortage and crack down on illegal and unmaintained residences.

Hop on board Universal Studios Hollywood Red Line. Take the Snapchat/Santa Monica Expo Line. Or ride the Blue Line to the Staples/LA Live! Station. These are some of the fictional names for rail, bus lines and transit stations made entirely possible by a new advertising policy adopted by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) governing board last week.
