Tenn. officer shot while trying to serve warrant
A man suspected of shooting and wounding a Nashville, Tennessee, police officer has been found dead in a motel room. Police tweeted that they found the gunman who shot the officer dead inside a room at the Cumberland Inn on Tuesday morning, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

4 Arrested After Shootout With Officers at Party in South Los Angeles
As LAPD Chief Charlie Beck provided more details Tuesday about a shootout with police at a party in South Los Angeles Sunday night, he also took time to discuss the impact of guns and gang violence in Los Angeles. At a briefing at police headquarters Tuesday morning, authorities said a young man who allegedly fired at Los Angeles police officers at a South Los Angeles gang party was in custody Tuesday on $1 million bail.

Deadly Shooting Investigation Underway In Valley Glen
Homicide detectives Wednesday investigated the shooting death of a man in Valley Glen. Police responded just before midnight to the 13600 block of Sylvan Street for report of shots fired in the area. Upon their arrival, authorities pronounced an adult man dead at the scene. The victim's identity is being withheld pending family notification. A preliminary investigation revealed the shooting took place in the 1600 block of Victory Boulevard. Police believe the victim walked from the shooting location to Sylvan Street, where he succumbed to his injuries.

It's not what any homeowner wants to see, thieves rummaging through their home. But for this burglary victim, it's what was taken that is more distressing than usual. The Westchester homeowner says they got away with three handguns, and two hunting rifles. He's now too scared to show his face on camera.

Authorities Investigating Assault Caught on Video at Hollywood Metro Station
Officials were searching for a man accused of punching another man and knocking him to the ground at a Metro station in Hollywood early Tuesday morning, authorities said. Deputies are reviewing a cell phone video of the incident provided to KTLA by witness Luke Cunningham, who said he captured what he describes as a "senseless crime" around 1 a.m. at the Hollywood and Vine Metro Red Line station after noticing a dispute break out between the victim, who he believes to be homeless, and another man

LA city attorney takes aim at suspected white supremacist gang in San Fernando Valley
Authorities announced a series of actions Tuesday in a crackdown against property owners and associates of a white supremacist gang allegedly involved with two San Fernando Valley homes. The homes in Canoga Park and Granada Hills have served as "bases of operations'' for members of the San Fernando Valley Peckerwoods gang, according to Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer.

Man Convicted in Fatal Shooting of Woman Walking on Hollywood Sidewalk
A 32-year-old man was convicted Tuesday of the shotgun killing of a woman walking on a Hollywood sidewalk with her boyfriend last year in what authorities believe was an attack precipitated by a financial dispute. The Los Angeles Superior Court jury deliberated just over a day before finding Ezeoma Chigozie Obioha guilty of first-degree murder for the July 5, 2015, death of Carrie Melvin, along with the special circumstance allegation of murder for financial gain and an allegation that he personally and intentionally discharged a shotgun.

Hit-and-run driver triggered crash that killed 5-year-old, police say
A hit-and-run driver who caused another motorist to swerve off the road and plow into a South Los Angeles apartment building, killing a 5-year-old boy, has been charged with vehicular manslaughter, according to authorities. Jorge Ruiz-Garcia, 28, surrendered to police on Dec. 9, more than a week after he fled the collision but left the front grill of his car at the scene, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Ex-Sheriff's deputy recalls culture of abuse in jails under Lee Baca
A convicted Los Angeles County deputy whose actions within the Men's Central Jail triggered criminal charges against former Sheriff Lee Baca and many others down the chain of command, recounted for a jury Tuesday how the culture of abuse against inmates was commonplace, and how he got caught. Shackled at his ankles and wrists and dressed in a white, federal prison jumpsuit, a heavily bearded Gilbert Michel explained at the federal courthouse in downtown L.A. how he beat inmates when he worked at Men's Central Jail between 2008 and 2011.

More colleges are getting bomb-sniffing dogs in a time of always-looming security threats, with two in New England among the latest. Black Labradors named Figaro and Bella attended the same training class and arrived in October at the University of Rhode Island and Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts, respectively.

99 Dallas officers quit in 10 weeks
Ninety-nine officers have quit or retired from the Dallas Police Department since October, continuing an exodus that started last year. Meanwhile, the department has hired only 30 people for the next academy class in February. Suspect arrested in traffic stop shooting of 2 Ga. officers
Investigators say they've arrested a man suspected of shooting and wounding two Georgia police officers. In a news release late Monday, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation says Khari Anthony Dashaun Gordon was charged with multiple counts including attempted murder and assaulting a police officer.

L.A. City Council Designates Lytton Savings Building as Historical Cultural Monument
In a unanimous decision this morning, the Los Angeles City Council approved designating the 56-year-old Lytton Savings building at 8150 Sunset Blvd. as a historic cultural monument (HCM). The designation bestows certain protections against demolition on the mid-century modern building, but does not guarantee its survival.

Local governments can't collect taxes from online travel firms
In a loss for local governments, the California Supreme Court decided Monday that online travel companies such as Expedia Inc. are exempt from paying hotel occupancy taxes. The ruling came in one of several  lawsuits filed by California cities and counties against the online firms, including Hotwire Inc. and Priceline.com.
