Missing and Exploited Children
LACP partners, tools
EDITOR'S NOTE: Here at LA Community Policing we freely partner with other non-profit and government organizations whose missions fit within our own efforts. The exploitation of children in the United States, and the numbers of those abducted or missing, is alarming, and we strive to help kids have the best chance at healthy happy childhoods, free from harm and bad experiences. But, when things go bad, we hope the materials we provide can assist parents, law enforcement and others as they seek the tools and support they so desperately need in times of adversity. Here are a few of the outstanding efforts we can easily recommend.

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s® (NCMEC) mission is to help prevent child abduction and sexual exploitation; help find missing children; and assist victims of child abduction and sexual exploitation, their families, and the professionals who serve them. |
| |
Headquartered outside the nation’s capital in Alexandria, Virginia, NCMEC was created in 1984 as a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization to provide services for families and professionals in the prevention of abducted, endangered, and sexually exploited children. NCMEC is mandated by Congress and works in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.
NCMEC has assisted law enforcement personnel with 154,161 missing child cases, resulting in the recovery of 138,506; trained 256,386 law enforcement and other professionals, handled more than 675,000 reports of child sexual exploitation through our CyberTipline, printed 46,016,000 copies of issue-related publications; and handled 2,377,000 telephone calls through its national toll-free Hotline, 1-800-THE-LOST® (1-800-843-5678). NCMEC’s Web site, www.missingkids.com, reaches a global audience with a multilingual database of images and information on missing children, prevention tips, and free resources.
NCMEC is unique. It is the only child protection nonprofit organization provided access to the FBI's National Crime Information Center (NCIC) Missing Person, Wanted Person, and Unidentified Person Files; the National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (NLETS); and the Federal Parent Locator Service (FPLS). It is the only organization operating a 24-hour, toll-free Hotline for the recovery of missing children in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Justice. NCMEC is also the only private, non-profit organization that combines these and many other resources to provide an unmatched level of support – backed by more than 24 years of experience handling missing children cases -- to law enforcement, state clearinghouses, and parents seeking the recovery of abducted children, both domestically and internationally.
NCMEC’s unparalleled experience in child abduction cases includes over 12 years of handling, on behalf of the U.S. State Department, applications seeking return of or access to children abducted to the U.S. under the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction (from 1995 to April of 2008). Also, NCMEC is the only organization operating a 24-hour child pornography tipline (www.CyberTipline.com) in cooperation with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. |

A Message from John Walsh
A Message from John Walsh
When my son Adam was murdered, I began my journey through an America that I wish I knew nothing about. An America where adults do appalling things to children.
Back in 1981 when Adam was abducted, there weren't any resources for endangered children and their families. My wife Revé and I had no idea what to do. In an instant, our lives were turned completely upside down. We just began beating on doors asking for help. We called anyone and everyone. It felt as if we were in charge of the investigation. While we feared for our son's safety, we were also angry at the system that was supposed to protect our son and help us.
Adam's abduction was our private hell -- but it was not an isolated incident. Life is an obstacle course for children in America today. Sadly, stranger abduction cases are just the tip of the iceberg. Physical and psychological violence and abuse, abduction, molestation, and sexual exploitation are all overwhelming in magnitude yet largely unrecognized and underreported
From the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children
With viewers' help America's Most Wanted has helped reunite abducted children with their parents and put lots of perverts behind bars. But we're only on TV for 1 hour a week. NCMEC is there 24/7. Since 1984, they've handled 1.8 million calls, trained more than 180,000 professionals, distributed more than 28 million copies of publications, worked 94,000 Missing-child cases, and helped recover 78,000 Missing children.

"AMERICA'S MOST WANTED" Highlights First-In-The-Nation Statewide Cybercrime Sweep
Using Groundbreaking Technology to Fight Online Predators - Sat, June 13, on FOX
June 9, 2009 – The Internet may have revolutionized communications, but it also has provided a convenient cover for those who make and distribute child pornography. State-of-the-art technology is now revolutionizing the way law enforcement fights back.
On Saturday, June 13 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), AMERICA'S MOST WANTED and host John Walsh will show viewers how authorities in Florida are using sophisticated technology to achieve big results in the fight against child pornography.
Florida Governor Charlie Crist, while serving as the state's attorney general, created the CyberCrime Unit in 2005 to protect children from computer-facilitated sexual exploitation. Under Florida's current Attorney General, Bill McCollum, the CyberCrime Unit has expanded to include a staff of more than 30 in five offices throughout the state.
A task force made up of the CyberCrime Unit, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the U.S. Marshals Service and local authorities recently conducted "Operation Orange Tree." During the successful operation, AMW crews were on-hand as agents used a new high-tech tool to pinpoint locations where child porn was being downloaded and to take down the suspected predators. While highlighting the advanced technology, the crime-fighting TV show will also ask its viewers to help cops locate several suspected predators who've slipped through law enforcement's net.
In its 22 seasons, AMW and its viewers have helped capture more than 1,060 dangerous criminals, including dozens of child predators.
AMERICA'S MOST WANTED airs Saturdays (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. AMW is produced by STF Productions, Inc. Lance Heflin is executive producer, and Steve Katz serves as co-executive producer.
