Mourners Remember Houston Officer Lost To Harvey's Floods
A veteran Houston police officer who drowned in Harvey's floodwaters was remembered Wednesday for his faith and his dedication to family and public service. Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner were among the hundreds of mourners who attended the service for Sgt. Steve Perez at Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Houston.

Man Pleads Guilty To 2015 Killing Of Texas Deputy At Gas Station
A man accused of fatally shooting a Texas sheriff's deputy at a gas station pleaded guilty Wednesday to capital murder and accepted a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. The plea by Shannon Miles, of Houston, allowed him to avoid a possible death sentence for the August 2015 slaying of Darren Goforth. The 47-year-old Harris County sheriff's deputy was shot 15 times while at a suburban Houston gas station where he was putting fuel in his patrol car.

Armed Robbers Tie Up 2 Women In Los Feliz Home Invasion Robbery
Two armed robbers burst into a $3-million home in Los Feliz on Wednesday night and tied up two women before fleeing with jewelry and cash, authorities said. The incident was reported about 10:15 p.m. at a five-bedroom house in the 4400 block of Cromwell Avenue, just north of Los Feliz Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The masked suspects entered the residence through a back door, then used duct tape and zip ties to bind a homeowner and a caretaker, who were pushed into a bedroom, said an LAPD spokesperson.

Reported Car-To-Car Shooting Leads To Police Pursuit And Crash In South L.A.
Five people were taken into custody early Wednesday following a report of a shooting in South Los Angeles, police said. The shooting erupted about 4:30 a.m. near 51 st  and Hoover streets, authorities said. People in one car opened fire on passengers in another, KABC reported. Officers responding to the shooting found one of the vehicles and gave chase, said LAPD Officer Irma Mota.

Suspect Arrested After Hourlong Chase Through Silver Lake Area
An assault with a deadly weapon suspect who also is accused of ramming a police car with the SUV he was driving during an hourlong chase Wednesday night throughout Northeast Los Angeles was arrested. The pursuit began around 10 p.m. in the Los Angeles Police Department's Rampart Division, said Officer Sal Ramirez, but the starting location was not immediately reported.

Armed Men Caught On Camera Holding Up Taco Truck
Police on Wednesday sought the public's help to find two men who robbed a taco truck at gunpoint in an incident caught on video. The men held up a taco truck on Aug. 20, 2017 at 9:45 p.m. near Washington Boulevard and Cimarron Street, police said in a news release. They approached the victim who was standing in front of the taco truck. One of them pulled a gun and demanded property before both men took off with victim's property.

Man With Hatchet Attacks Cars In Hollywood Neighborhood
New video obtained by FOX 11 shows a man with a hatchet walking through a Hollywood Hills neighborhood as he hits passing cars with the weapon. The video was shot just weeks ago at the 2300 block of Alcyona in Hollywood Hills, and was provided to FOX 11 courtesy of the Hollywood Hills Crime Busters Facebook group. The man can be seen and heard yelling "Get the f*** out of here, and you motherf***** are following me, fu***** white people!"

Deputy Rescues 4-Month-Old Girl Left In Locked Car In Chatsworth
A deputy was being hailed as a hero today for rescuing a 4-month-old baby girl left unattended in a locked car in sweltering heat in Chatsworth. Deputy Dustin Morales was approached about 3 p.m. Tuesday outside the Chatsworth Courthouse by a woman who told him about the child's plight, according to sheriff's Lt. Edward Mackenzie.

Man Sentenced For Fatally Stabbing Lover Found Dead In Container
A 29-year-old man who fatally stabbed his lover, and left the man's body in a plastic storage container in the victim's Los Angeles apartment, was sentenced Wednesday to 16 years to life in state prison. A Los Angeles Superior Court jury found Kenneth Mullen Watkins guilty Aug. 8 of second-degree murder for the January 2016 slaying of Terry Nigale Benjamin, whose body was discovered on Jan. 23, 2016, after neighbors in his apartment complex in the 4100 block of Santo Thomas Drive complained about a foul smell.

$25K Reward For Killer Of Korean War Veteran, 85, In Carson
A $25,000 reward was being offered Wednesday for information that leads to an arrest and conviction for the fatal beating of an 85-year-old Korean War veteran in Carson on May 31. Frank Hernandez was attacked and robbed that afternoon as he walked in the 300 block of East 220th Street, the sheriff's department reported. He died a week later in a hospital. Authorities planned a 10 a.m. news conference at the sheriff's Carson Station to announce the reward and release a composite drawing of the suspect.

L.A. County Crime-Inspired Measure Would Ban Openly Carrying Rifles
In Unincorporated Areas Of California Californians would be prohibited from openly carrying long guns in public, unincorporated areas of the state under a bill approved Wednesday by the Legislature and sent to the governor for consideration. The measure, opposed by the National Rifle Assn., was requested by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department to plug a loophole in state law that bans openly carrying handguns in areas outside cities.

California Senate Bill Headed To Gov. Brown Would Limit Mandatory Sentences For Some Drug Charges
A state Senate bill headed to Gov. Jerry Brown would reduce sentence enhancements for some low-level, nonviolent drug offenses, part of a push by Democratic legislators to help young people facing charges or doing time in California. Under current state law, a person convicted for sale or possession for sale of a small amount of drugs can face a sentence of three to five years behind bars, plus an additional three years in jail for each prior conviction for similar drug offenses.

Officials: 1 Dead, 3 Injured In Washington School Shooting
A shooter opened fire at a high school in a tiny town in Washington state Wednesday, killing one student, injuring three others and sending worried parents to the school in a frenzied rush, authorities said. Brian Schaeffer of the Spokane Fire Department told reporters that one child died at Freeman High School in Rockford, south of Spokane, while three injured victims were taken to a hospital and expected to survive.

When Los Angeles City Controller Ron Galperin unveiled report cardsWednesday for scores of public parks across the city, it wasn't a shock that the lowest grades were for the dreaded restrooms. Sixteen parks got D or F grades for their bathrooms, which got an overall C grade across the city.

LA 2028: IOC Officially Announces LA As Host Of 2028 Games
Los Angeles was officially named host of the 2028 Summer Olympics. The announcement happened following a meeting of the International Olympic Committee in Lima, Peru, where Los Angeles Olympic Delegation officials presented their final bid for the games. The IOC put the rubber stamp on a pre-determined conclusion Wednesday, giving Paris the 2024 Games and LA the 2028 Games in a history-making vote.
