Video Shows Suicidal Man Stab Cop 7 Times During Rescue Attempt
Five years ago, Officer Dane Norem was on patrol when he came across Javier Hernandez straddling the top of a fence on an overpass. Norem wrapped Hernandez's leg in a bear hug and lifted his feet, hoping to keep him from jumping onto the busy highway below. Hernandez kept pulling away from Norem, but the officer was determined to not let him fall. Hernandez then pulled out a knife and stabbed Norem seven times.

Video: Cop Car Set On Fire, 3 Arrested In Protest At Georgia Tech
Georgia Tech officials say three people were arrested during a protest after a vigil for a student who was fatally shot by campus police. Investigators said police shot and killed Scout Schultz late Saturday night after the 21-year-old student called 911 to report an armed and possibly intoxicated suspicious person who fit Schultz's physical description. Georgia Tech officials Monday night urged students to stay indoors because of violent protests on campus.

Pizza Shop Employee Fired After Printing Anti-Police Message On Torrance Officer's Receipt
An employee at pizza shop in Torrance was fired Monday after printing a derogatory message on a police officer's receipt. The exchange occurred Thursday when the uniformed officer stopped by Pieology about noon for a quick lunch. When the cashier handed him his receipt, he noticed “F--- The Cops” printed in the top right corner, said Sgt. Ronald Harris of the Torrance Police Department. “He was very empathetic, wanted to take the person aside and ask them why they felt so harshly against law enforcement,” Harris said of the officer, who was identified only as a department veteran.

One Of Texas' 10 Most Wanted Fugitives Arrested In Woodland Hills
One of Texas' 10 Most Wanted fugitives was arrested early Tuesday in Woodland Hills after posting a live video on social media, authorities said. Christopher Gonzalez, 18, who is also known as "Little Chris," was arrested after a short pursuit and foot chase in Woodland Hills. Gonzalez is a documented gang member who is wanted by police in Dallas for murder and a series of home invasion robberies.

Shots Fired At LA Marijuana Dispensary, Man Inside Is Arrested
Shots rang out today at a marijuana dispensary in the West Adams area of Los Angeles but no one was hurt, authorities said. Police were called  about 9:50 p.m. to the dispensary in the 4800 block of West Adams Boulevard, according to Lt. Jerry Davila of the Los Angeles Police Department's Southwest Station.

Man Posing As Maintenance Worker Distracts Woman As Accomplice Burglarizes Her North Hollywood Home
A man posing as a maintenance worker distracted a senior while his accomplice burglarized her North Hollywood home. Now, police are trying to determine whether this was related to a similar burglary two miles away. The quick-thinking victim took a picture of one of the men, who went into her North Hollywood house on Bonner Avenue on Sept 13. The victim's daughter, who did not want to reveal her name, said one of the thieves told her mother he was an electrician.

Police Release Name Of Suspect Caught On Video Vandalizing Sikh Temple In Los Feliz
Police on Monday released the name of an at-large suspect allegedly caught on video vandalizing a Sikh Temple in Los Feliz. The suspect -- identified as 27-year-old Artyom Manukyan -- allegedly wrote a rambling message on Aug. 31 on a wall outside the Hollywood Sikh Temple at 1966 N. Vermont Ave., according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Police Seek Leads On Skateboarding Car Burglars
Detectives are trying to identify three skateboarders who were caught on video riding along San Pedro streets, trying the handles on parked vehicles to find unlocked doors to steal what ever they could find inside. The thefts occurred from 2-4 a.m. Aug. 29 near Capitol Drive and Barrywood Avenue, Los Angeles police Detective Thomas Baran said. The skateboarders also are suspected of breaking into a garage.

LA-Area Engineer Who Loved Jason Bourne And James Bond Is Going To Prison In Russian Spy Sting
A Culver City man who worked for a South Bay defense contractor was sentenced Monday to five years in prison for his guilty plea to economic espionage and violating the Arms Export Control Act by selling sensitive satellite information to a person he believed to be a Russian spy. Gregory Allen Justice, who told an undercover investigator he was enamored with Jason Bourne, James Bond and the television spy thriller “The Americans,” was sentenced by U.S. District Judge George H. Wu, who said it was “extremely troubling” that Justice was willing to sell the secrets to the Russians because it is well known that their government “is not friendly to this country.”

L.A. Woman Who Received An Unenforceable Plea Deal Asks Brown To Commute Her Sentence
A Los Angeles woman who ended up with a life prison sentence after initially agreeing to a plea deal that promised possible parole after 7½ years has asked Gov. Jerry Brown to commute her sentence. The case, which troubled a federal appeals court, shows what can happen if a plea agreement is not in writing and the judge, the prosecutor and the defense lawyer fail to check the fine points of the law. Candace Fox, who turns 57 next month, has been in prison for 33 years for joining others in the killing and robbery of Lewis Levy.

California Lawmakers Pass Resolution To Oppose Anti-Semitism, Other Forms Of Discrimination
California lawmakers passed a resolution Thursday to take a stand against anti-Semitism and other types of discrimination. “History is going to judge us,” said Sen. Joel Anderson (R-Alpine), who supported the resolution. “Let's not be on the wrong side.” The resolution came in response to a rise in anti-Semitic incidents across the country, lawmakers said. Verbal discrimination, cemetery desecrations and targeted assaults are among the actions it opposes.

NY Police Station Has Been Shot At Dozens Of Times Since June
A police station in Syracuse has been hit by gunfire more than three dozen times since opening in June, but officials say no one has been injured. The Post-Standard reports that about 40 bullet marks dot the shatterproof windows at the Syracuse Police Department substation at Skiddy Park on the city's west side. The substation isn't staffed full time. Department spokesman Sgt. Richard Helterline says police aren't sure when the gunfire occurred because no one was inside the building when the shootings happened.

LAFD Hurricane Rescue Crew Comes Home To Wild Cheers
Los Angeles Firefighters were given a heroes' welcome after returning from the hurricane-ravaged states of Texas and Florida. The convoy of 70 firefighters returned to Sherman Oaks Monday night, after being away for more than three weeks – a new record for the Los Angeles Fire Department. The team of firefighters, known as FEMA's LAFD TF-1, was first deployed to Texas, where they made dozens of rescues from homes and neighborhoods flooded by Hurricane Harvey.

"Coldwater traffic is bad enough, and the school wants to build a project that takes 3 years?" said resident Sarah Boyd.

LA County Wants Sylmar Armory To Become A Year-Round Shelter For Homeless Women
An armory in Sylmar that sits vacant for most of the year is being considered as a year-round transitional housing facility for women experiencing homelessness, but who are close to securing permanent places to live. In an open letter sent Friday to Sylmar stakeholders, Los Angeles County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl said she and her staff based the proposal on community input and on a report on homeless women and their needs.

Garcetti: 2028 Olympics To Bring Big Benefits To LA
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and the head of the International Olympic Committee spoke Monday about why the 2028 Summer Games were awarded to LA and what the city needs to do to prepare. Garcetti said the areas to tackle, like traffic homelessness and housing, will provide benefits to Los Angeles long after the Games are over. The city, he said, is already working hard on those issues for its own sake.
