New Orleans officer fatally shot in ambush; suspect held
A New Orleans police officer was fatally shot on Friday, ambushed as he and his patrol team stepped out of their car to investigate something suspicious shortly after midnight. Other officers returned fire, wounding a suspect who eventually surrendered to a SWAT team, police said. "Our officer collapsed right there on the scene" and died at a hospital, Police Superintendent Michael Harrison told reporters at an early morning news conference.

Massachusetts Cop Killer Seeks Early Release ?
Jamie C. Richards, one of three Worcester men sentenced to life in prison for the 1994 murder of Paxton Police Chief Robert J. Mortell, will state his case Thursday for early release before the state Parole Board. Worcester District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. will attend in opposition, according to the DA's spokesman, Timothy J. Connolly.

Valley First-Responders Praised For Getting The Call, Acting Quickly, Sacrifice ?
When the La Tuna fire broke out last month, Rashad Benoit, a Los Angeles Fire Department firefighter, had a day off. Still, a few minutes later he was on his way to his fire station. In the following three days, Benoit and his team battled one the largest fires in the history of Los Angeles County. Benoit was among several first responders in the San Fernando Valley on Thursday honored during the 38th Annual “E Awards” for Excellence in Public Safety event. The luncheon at the Odyssey Restaurant in Granada Hills drew several hundred firefighters, policemen and community leaders from across the Valley. Established by former Councilman Hal Bernson, the event, which recognized members of the Los Angeles Fire Department and Los Angeles Police Department, was hosted by Councilmember Mitchell Englander. “They are the heroes who went above and beyond to help others,” Englander said. “They always put others before themselves, even if they are total strangers.”

Body of Woman Found On Venice Beach ?
The body of a woman was found early Thursday on Venice Beach, and police don't know who she is or how she got there. A jogger told police they saw the body wash onto the shore at around 6:30 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The woman was white, appeared to be in her late 30's, was partially clothed and had tattoos, investigators said. She did not have any identification on her.

Man, 30, Shot, Hurt Near South Los Angeles Walgreens Pharmacy ?
A 30-year-old man was shot and wounded in South Los Angeles. The shooting occurred at Wednesday night just south of a Walgreens Pharmacy located at 1800 W. Slauson Ave., near Western Avenue, according to Lt. Angela McGee of the Los Angeles Police Department's 77th Street Division. The victim was shot in his back and ran to the pharmacy following the shooting, McGee said.

LAPD Helicopter Makes Emergency Landing At Dodger Stadium ?
A Los Angeles Police Department helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing at Dodger Stadium on Thursday afternoon, officials said. The chopper touched down around 2:10 p.m. after experiencing an issue while on routine patrol, according to Officer Sal Ramirez, a department spokesman. No officers were injured. It was not clear if the issue was mechanical in nature.

Police Seek Man Who Burglarized Hollywood Apartment
Police Thursday sought the public's help in identifying a man suspected of burglarizing a Hollywood apartment. The suspect entered the underground garage of a large apartment complex in the area of Alta Vista and Sunset Boulevard at about 6:30 p.m. last Friday and loitered around the front door steps before gaining access to the lobby when a deliveryman exited, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Would-Be Ferrari Thief At Exotic-Car Rental Business Near LAX Thwarted By Metal Gate ?
A would-be car thief was caught on video breaking into an exotic car rental business in an apparent effort to steal a Ferrari, McLaren or another high-end vehicle. He was thwarted, however, by a less-than-exotic security measure: A metal gate that he just couldn't smash through. The suspect, who made no attempts to disguise his face, is seen breaking into the office of Beverly Hills Rent-A-Car and swiping the keys to most of the cars on the lot.

Federal safety regulators have shut down a troubled Iowa trucking company that owned the semitrailer involved in a human trafficking case in which 10 immigrants died in Texas. Pyle Transportation was placed under an “out-of-service order” Monday by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration after a review found the company's safety rating was so unsatisfactory that it was unfit to remain in business, agency spokesman Duane DeBruyne confirmed to The Associated Press.
