Police Officers Will Keep A Watchful Eye On Homes In Evacuated Fire Areas
As officials warned residents to stay clear of neighborhoods impacted by the massive wildfires burning in Southern California, law enforcement leaders made clear to those displaced that officers would be on hand to keep an eye on the homes they have left behind. Los Angeles leaders during a news conference on Thursday announced that around 300 law-enforcement personnel have been assigned to direct traffic and protect homes, both at the site of the Skirball fire and in the San Fernando Valley.

LAFD Drones To Be Used For First Time To Assess Creek, Skirball Fire Damage, Look For Hot Spots
For the first time, the Los Angeles F ire Department Thursday plans to deploy drones to help coordinate its battle against a pair of wildfires threatening homes in the city. LAFD Chief Ralph Terrazas said the drones will be used “for the first time ever,” primarily to conduct property assessment as the agency surveys damage caused by the Creek fire near Sylmar and the Skirball fire in the Bel-Air and Sepulveda Pass.

Some Evacuation Orders To Be Lifted For Skirball Fire Area: LAPD
Firefighters seemed to be gaining the upper hand on the Skirball fire burning in the hills near the Getty Center with containment growing to 20 percent Thursday morning. Firefighters were contending mostly with hotspots rather than large flames but many hotspots sat directly next to homes with strong winds persisting and not expected to let up until Sunday , Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said at a Thursday news conference.

As questions from across the country pour in about how to support firefighting efforts in Southern California, Los Angeles' fire chief has an answer. Donate to the LAFD Foundation, he said. “We use that to purchase tools and equipment for our firefighters,” Chief Ralph Terrazas said Thursday morning. “That is the best way to donate.”

Florida Cop Shot Multiple Times, Gunman Killed In Parking Lot
An apparent shoplifting incident at a Miami store parking lot Wednesday left a police officer with a gunshot wound and a second person dead, authorities said. Manuel Gonzalez was working an off-duty detail in uniform to provide security at a Walmart when he confronted the shoplifting suspect, Miami-Dade Police Director Juan Perez said at a news conference.

Slain Florida Officer Posthumously Awarded Agency's Highest Honor
A slain Florida police officer has been recognized with her department's highest honors. Lt. Debra Clayton was fatally shot in January while trying to arrest a man suspected of killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend. On Wednesday, the Orlando Police Department posthumously commended Clayton with the Purple Heart Award and the Award of Valor.

The killer of a 29-year-old North Hills man was on the loose Thursday. The victim was shot and killed just before 9 p.m. Wednesday in the 8700 block of Langdon Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

L.A. Man Found Guilty Of Sexually Assaulting 5 Boys As Young As 7 Years Old
A 58-year-old Los Angeles man was found guilty of committing multiple sex crimes against five boys between the ages of 7 and 17 over a span of seven years, the L.A. County District Attorney's Office said Thursday. Amador Valencia Santos was convicted of charges including lewd acts upon a child, continuous sexual abuse, attempted sodomy as well as three counts of oral copulation on a minor and two counts of sodomy on a child.

Driver Sought After 4 Severely, 1 Critically Injured In Los Feliz ‘Road Rage' Hit-And-Run Crash: LAPD
Five people — including three teenagers —suffered severe injuries in a hit-and-run crash stemming from “road-rage” and law enforcement officials are searching for the driver, the Los Angeles Police Department said Thursday. One of the victims was left critically injured, police said.

Nearly 50 Arrested In California Gang Crackdown
Nearly 50 people have been arrested in a crackdown on gangs in a troubled Northern California city that also netted nearly three-dozen firearms, the state attorney general's office said Thursday. The sweep was aimed at members of some of south Stockton's most notorious criminal gangs, with names like the MOB, Flyboys, East Coast Crips, Conway Gangsters, Sierra Vista Project and Glock Team.

L.A. Council Committee Approves ‘Sanctuary' Label For City, Rules On Border Wall Contractors
A Los Angeles City Council committee backed a plan Thursday to formally declare L.A. a “city of sanctuary” — a symbolic gesture that comes as city leaders battle President Trump's administration over immigration policies. The council's Immigrant Affairs, Civil Rights and Equity Committee voted to formally adopt the “sanctuary” label and to require businesses with city contracts to disclose if they are working on Trump's proposed border wall. The full council must sign off on the proposals.

When Rebuilding Or Evacuating, Watch Out For Price Gouging, LA Warns
As brush fires around Southern California force thousands of people from their homes, Los Angeles officials are warning residents to look out for and report instances of price gouging. Gouging can occur with contractors preying on desperate people trying to repair or rebuild homes and it can happen with people selling emergency supplies like gasoline and medicine.
