LAFD Asks Public Not To Interfere With Firefighting Operations By Photographing Brush Fires
The Los Angeles Fire Department asked the public Sunday not to go to the areas of the Skirball and Creek fires to take pictures because it would interfere with firefighting operations. "We've had several occurrences of people not paying attention to the roads and to equipment because they want to take pictures," fire department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart said.

Residents Return To Rubble As Fire Crews Make Progress On San Diego And Los Angeles Wildfires
Geoffrey Smith heard it first from his neighbors: The wind-driven wildfire that swept through northern San Diego County had devoured his Bonsall home. As he headed to his neighborhood over the weekend to see the destruction, the 70-year-old veterinarian's mind drifted to what he likely lost. The destructive Lilac fire, which ignited Thursday near the intersection of State Route 76 and Interstate 15, scorched 4,100 acres and destroyed more than 150 structures, including homes and farm outbuildings. An additional 56 structures were damaged and 1,500 more were at risk, authorities said Sunday evening.

Dozens Of Homes And 15,600 Acres Burned: Sylmar Creek Blaze 95 Percent Done
The Creek Fire near Sylmar was 95 percent contained Monday after destroying dozens of homes and scorching more than 15,600 acres, and full containment was expected later in the day, authorities said. The upgraded containment figure from 90 to 95 percent was reported by Cal Fire Sunday night.

Southern California's Fire Devastation Is ‘The New Normal,' Gov. Brown Says
Gov. Jerry Brown surveyed the devastation Saturday in Ventura — the area hardest hit by firestorms that have displaced nearly 90,000 people in Southern California — calling it “the new normal.” The visit came four days after Brown declared a state of emergency in response to the wildfires. In all, blazes from Ojai to Oceanside have destroyed more than 790 structures and burned 175,000 acres.

Missouri Officer Shot In Head By Handcuffed Suspect Undergoes Another Surgery
The Arnold, Missouri police officer shot earlier this week was undergoing another surgery Thursday to try to save his life, according to police. Officer Ryan O'Connor, 44, was shot in the back of the head while sitting in a police vehicle Tuesday with a handcuffed burglary suspect in the back.

Maryland FBI Agent, Fire Marshal Die In Highway Crash
An FBI agent and a state fire marshal were killed Friday while standing on the shoulder of a highway at the scene of a traffic crash, Maryland State Police said. FBI Supervisory Special Agent Carlos Wolff, 36, and Deputy Chief State Fire Marshal Sander Cohen, 33, died when they were struck by a car as they waited for help after Wolff's car crashed on Interstate 270 in Rockville.

2 Arrested In Pasadena After High-Speed Police Chase Through San Fernando Valley
A high-speed chase through the San Fernando Valley on Saturday night ended when the driver and passenger were taken custody in Pasadena, police said. One suspect was later identified as Alexis Cortes, 34, of Reseda, according to a watch commander at the Pasadena Police Department. Los Angeles police signaled for the driver of a Honda sedan with temporary paper plates to pull over in Reseda just after 10 p.m. Saturday.

LA Deputies Shoot Man Who Cut Them With Knife
Los Angeles County authorities say deputies fatally shot a man who attacked them with a knife, cutting their hands. Sheriff's officials say the deputies initially responded late Sunday in Artesia to a call about a suspicious man in an SUV peering into parked vehicles. A second call reported the man had driven onto a lawn, abandoned the SUV and fought with someone before walking away.

California Opens Online System To License New Pot Industry
California is taking applications to license its emerging legal marijuana industry. Recreational pot sales will begin in California on Jan. 1, joining the state's long-running medical cannabis market. The state on Friday kicked off the process of considering temporary licenses for what is expected to be thousands of retailers, distributors and testing labs in the new marketplace.

A man with a pipe bomb strapped to his body with Velcro and zip ties set off the crude device in the subway near Times Square on Monday, injuring him and three other people at the height of the morning rush hour.
