Ohio Officer Shot 4 Times Grateful To Be Alive For Christmas
A bullet dangles from a chain looped around the neck of Sgt. David White. Partially discolored from ripping through the flesh of his shoulders and back, it reminds the 60-year-old Uniontown police officer of the summer night when he was shot four times ... and it reminds him he's still alive.

$50,000 Reward For Info In Fatal Hit-And-Run Crash
A woman was killed Christmas Day in a hit-and-run crash in the Leimert Park area of Los Angeles, authorities said. There's a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person who killed the woman at 9:30 p.m. in a crosswalk at Crenshaw Boulevard and Coliseum Street when she was struck by an SUV that fled the scene, said Sgt. Dana Adams of the Los Angeles Police Department's South Traffic Division.

Surveillance Video Captures Big-Rig That Ran Over LA Woman Looking For Lost Cat
Police today released a photo of a big rig they believe was used in the Dec. 21 hit-and-run death of a 69-year-old woman in Boyle Heights. A little after 9:50 p.m. on Dec. 21, Cynthia Szukala was standing outside her parked motor home in the 3700 block of Union Pacific Avenue when she was struck by an 18-wheel tractor trailer, the Los Angeles Police Department reported.

Homeless Man, 31, Is Victim In Sun Valley Homicide
A 31-year-old homeless man has been identified after being shot and killed Dec. 15 in Sun Valley. Sebastian Perez, who had no middle name, was found on the 11900 block of Allegheny Street, said Ed Winter of the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.

Christmas Holiday Traffic Deaths Way Down In LA County, But DUIs Way Up Across State
Three people were killed on Los Angeles County highways during the 78 hours that made up this year's Christmas holiday reporting period, the California Highway Patrol said today. The three deaths were a marked decrease from 2016, when 13 people died on the highways patrolled by the CHP during this same time span in 2016.

California Man Arrested After Explosive Device Found In Car
Authorities say a Southern California man has been arrested after an improvised explosive device was found in his car after he was pulled over by a sheriff's deputy. The Riverside County Sheriff's Department says Tuesday that 55-year-old Norman Bell was arrested on suspicion of reckless possession of a destructive device.

As we roll into 2018, there are new laws and changes to existing laws that California drivers need to be aware of. While recreational use of marijuana will take effect January 1, there are a number of new laws going into effect. For drivers, it will be illegal to smoke or ingest marijuana while operating a vehicle.

California Teens Commit Fewer Crimes Than Their Parents Did
California's teenagers can no longer be considered a high crime demographic, following a decades-long slide in youth crime and arrest rates, according to a new study. The Center for Juvenile and Criminal Justice has released a report  looking at California's youth arrest rates and rates for various types of crime and found 2016 continued a decades-long decline in both.

Retired Chicago Officer Shot To Death In Arkansas
A man who spent decades as a Chicago police officer has been killed in rural Arkansas. Chester Hornowski, 71, was found dead of multiple gunshot wounds Dec. 5 in a residence in Mountain Home, Ark., according to the Baxter County sheriff's office.

Suspect In Oregon Deputy's 2007 Death Arrested In Mexico
A Mexican man who was charged in a crash that killed an Oregon sheriff's deputy in 2007 and then mistakenly released 10 months ago has been arrested again, authorities said. Oregon State Police said in a statement Sunday that it learned Alfredo de Jesus-Ascencio, 29, had been caught in Mexico.

Soaring Opioid Drug Deaths Cause U.S. Life Expectancy To Drop For 2nd Year
U.S. deaths from drug overdoses skyrocketed 21 percent last year, and for the second straight year dragged down how long Americans are expected to live. The government figures released Thursday put drug deaths at 63,600, up from about 52,000 in 2015.

Los Angeles County Libraries Offer Reading Program To Erase Account Fees
People 21 and younger can read away any fees they've accrued on their County of Los Angeles Public Library accounts. The program, called The Great Read Away, is eligible for library cardholders 21 and under. For every hour a person spends reading in the library, $5 in fees on your account will be removed.
