Photos: Law Enforcement, Family, Friends Gather To Remember Sgt. Ron Helus
Memorial services were held Thursday for Ventura County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Ron Helus. Helus, 54, was killed during the mass shooting at Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks on Nov. 7. He arrived within minutes of the first shots fired, bursting into the Western-style bar and confronting the gunman. Helus was a 29-year veteran of the department. He leaves behind a wife and son. Law enforcement, relatives and friends packed the Westlake Village church to pay tribute to the sheriff's veteran, husband and father. Gov. Jerry Brown and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti were among the dignitaries in the crowd, while others -- some who had never met Helus -- stood outside to watch the funeral on a cellphone.

L.A. Man Charged In Fatal Hoax Phone Call Pleads Guilty To Dozens Of ‘Swatting' Crimes
A Los Angeles man accused of making a hoax phone call that led to a fatal police shooting in Kansas pleaded guilty Tuesday to placing dozens of similar “swatting” calls, including one to FBI headquarters in Washington and another that may have delayed a hearing on net neutrality last year, authorities said. Tyler Barriss, 25, will serve at least 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to 51 separate charges brought by federal prosecutors in Kansas, California and Washington, D.C., according to a statement issued Tuesday by the U.S. attorney's office in Wichita, Kan. “Without ever stepping foot in Wichita, the defendant created a chaotic situation that quickly turned from dangerous to deadly,” U.S. Atty. Stephen McAllister said in a statement.

How Body Cams Protect Police Legally And Physically
Research shows that after implementing the use of body-worn cameras, law enforcement agencies witness a decrease in the number of frivolous complaints filed against cops by members of the public. In conjunction with this decline, some agencies have also witnessed a reduction in the number of assaults on officers when citizens realize their aggressive behavior is being recorded. Several recent studies about the efficacy of BWCs exist, and they are accessible to law enforcement agencies. It is worth the effort for agencies to explore and review this existing body of research to inform critical management and training decisions.

LA Metro Committee Approves $500M In 710 Freeway Gap Closure Dollars For Local Road Improvements
For the first time since LA Metro killed the extension of the 710 Freeway, the agency on Wednesday approved 34 alternative projects, saying improvements to roads and major thoroughfares affected by traffic from the freeway's northern terminus represents a new, cities-driven approach that flies in the face of Caltrans' more-than-60-year desire to complete the 4.1-mile gap between El Sereno, South Pasadena and Pasadena. The Metro Ad Hoc Congestion, Highway and Roads Committee unanimously approved the first set of projects worth a total of $514.4 million.
