Man Charged With Killing A Grandmother On Her Way To Church In South L.A. Hit-and-Run
A man was charged in connection with a hit-and-run that killed a grandmother who was on her way to church last month, Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office officials said Thursday. Brandon Rosendo Mazariego, 25, was allegedly driving an SUV on Budlong Avenue on Nov. 13 when he turned onto West 28th Street and hit Maria Asuncion Reynoso, 77, officials said in a news release. Reynoso was in a crosswalk a few miles from her home when she was struck and she died from her injuries. "It happened so fast." They avoided getting hit, but are pushed into the street. The man keeps walking and the two go for help. Taylor, an attorney, said she saw the same man a week later. She filed a police report, but was told in September it was in the hands of the district attorney's office. ABC 7

L.A. County Agrees To New Policies To End The Jail-to-Skid Row Cycle For Mentally Ill People
Los Angeles County agreed Thursday to new jail-release planning policies designed to interrupt the incarceration-to-skid row pipeline for inmates with mental illness and dementia. The new procedures are aimed at stabilizing an estimated 2,500 to 3,000 mentally ill inmates who leave jail each month and at helping them find housing, benefits and employment and thus avoid reoffending. “We know if you leave the jail with a place to stay and your next follow-up appointment you're less likely to reoffend,” said Timothy G. Belavich, director of mental health for the jail. “We really do believe this will reduce our recidivism, especially among the mentally ill.” Although the county had been offering some release planning, mentally ill inmates continued to be put out in the streets in the middle of the night without medication or a clear understanding of where to go for treatment. Golden State Killer trial could cost state of California $20 million
The trial of a former police officer suspected of being a notorious serial killer who terrorized California in the 1970s and 80s could cost taxpayers more than $20 million. A Sacramento County official said Wednesday the county has asked the state to help shoulder the costs for prosecuting Joseph DeAngelo."While the current estimate is more than $20 million, it is impossible at this point to accurately estimate all costs. We anticipate the complexities of the case, including 40 years of evidence, to greatly affect the final cost," said Natasha Drane of the county's office of Governmental Relations and Legislation. Metro Backs Temporary Plan To Preserve Green Line Service For South Bay Riders
Los Angeles County transportation leaders faced a politically tricky decision Thursday in how to connect two light rail lines: They could back a plan favorable to South Bay riders, or one preferred by Los Angeles officials. In the end, the South Bay prevailed — if only temporarily. Directors with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority voted 7 to 4 to support a plan that would allow South Bay commuters to travel most of the Green Line without changing trains. But the victory for South Bay riders could limit the capacity on the Crenshaw Line, which will be restricted to two-car trains for a year after it opens. KTLA 5

LA Councilman Said Vegan Options Should Be Available At Movie Theaters, LAX, Other Venues
Los Angeles should require all movie theaters, large-scale entertainment venues, airport restaurants, zoo concession stands and some other locations in the city to provide at least one vegan protein option, a city councilman said Wednesday. Councilman Paul Koretz introduced a motion referencing a number of studies that point to the negative impacts the meat and dairy industry has on the environment, including a University of Oxford study that found if more people in the United States adopted plant-based eating it could cut greenhouse-gas emissions from food sources by 70 percent.
