When Life Unravels, Where Do Police Officers Turn for Help?
David Swailes was a 10-year Los Angeles Police Department veteran who was married to his high school sweetheart. A father of four boys, he was making plans for a family trip to Disneyland. His wife of 14 years had noticed something was horribly wrong in recent months. His behavior had changed. There were fits of rage. He wasn't sleeping well and having nightmares when he did sleep. "There were all kind of pieces of a puzzle," said Melissa Swailes. "At the time, I didn't see how they all fit together. "I had every confidence that he would get through it." One day in 2016, on a son's second birthday, the day they were supposed to make that Disneyland visit, David Swailes killed himself with a gunshot to the head. "It's just so still surreal, to go from making plans [as a] family to go to Disneyland, to making funeral arrangements," said Melissa Swailes. David Swailes' death was one of 36 LAPD officer suicides reported between 1998 and 2017, according to a study done by the department's Behavioral Science Services. NBC4 -- with the support of the Los Angeles Police Protective League, the union that represents the department's more than 7,000 rank-and-file officers -- sent surveys with questions about job-related stress faced by officers. More than 600 officers responded to the NBC4 I-Team survey.

Sheriff: Bullet That Killed Sergeant Came From CHP Officer During Thousand Oaks Mass Shooting
The deputy sergeant killed during the Thousand Oaks mass shooting died from a bullet fired by a California Highway Patrol officer who was also trying to stop the suspect, Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub said in a Friday news conference. The suspect's gunfire hit Sgt. Ron Helus five times, but that gunfire was not necessarily fatal. “We are deeply saddened to inform you that Sgt. Helus was also struck by a sixth bullet, which we now know … was fired from the CHP officer's rifle,” the sheriff said. “Tragically, that bullet struck vital organs and was fatal.” Authorities made the discovery when FBI crime-lab analysis showed that the lethal bullet matched the type that came from the officer's weapon. Ayub said the news was “extremely difficult” to process and understand, particularly for Helus' wife, Karen, and adult son Jordan.

More Than 100 Firefighters Battle Sylmar Strip Mall Blaze
Firefighters Monday battled a greater-alarm blaze inside an L-shaped strip mall in Sylmar, authorities said. The fire was first reported at 3:47 a.m. at 12777 San Fernando Road, Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart said. Firefighters were working to keep the fire from spreading throughout the mall, but they had to get out of the interior and off part of the roof on one section of the L because “the structural integrity of the roof over the fire unit is poor,” Stewart said. “The common facade leaves the risk of the fire running the entire structure and is being closely monitored for safety,” she said. No injuries were reported, Stewart said.

Metro CEO Phil Washington announced Thursday that the agency had signed a letter of intent with a company called Aerial Rapid Transit Technologies that plans to build an aerial tram running between Union Station and the stadium. The letter will allow the agency to begin negotiations with the company in order to allow the proposal to move forward. ARTT is led by Drew McCourt, the son of former Dodgers own Frank McCourt. The company revealed plans for the project in April, estimating it would cost about $125 million to build. According to Martha Welborne, project manager for the ARTT system, the tram will “have the capacity to move thousands of people every hour.”
