Houston Officer Shot, 1 Of 4 Suspects Dead After Crime Spree
A violent crime spree late Thursday night ended with a Houston police officer seriously wounded and one of four robbery suspects dead from police gunfire. The 29-year-old officer, a five-year veteran, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and remained in surgery at Memorial Hermann Hospital into early Friday morning. Doctors wrapped up the surgery later Friday morning, and the officer is currently listed in stable condition, according to Houston Police Officers' Union President Joe Gamaldi. His identity was not immediately released. The crime spree reportedly started shortly before 10 p.m. at a Valero gas station in the 5800 block of Scott Street, according to Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo. The four suspects allegedly stole a man's 2003 Chevy Tahoe at gunpoint, said Acevedo, who earlier had been at nearby Texas Southern University for the Democratic presidential debate. The SUV was low on gas, and responding officers later found it abandoned in the 9200 block of Tierwester.

A man wielding a knife went from store to store attempting to stab shoppers at a Canoga Park shopping mall Friday. The Westfield Topanga Mall was packed with people when police responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call. Police apprehended the man near a Macy's department store on the second floor of the mall. Police say the man was reported running through the mall and into different stores trying to stab someone just after 7 p.m. Friday night. Before the police arrived, a mall security guard tackled the man and suffered a cut to his hand while trying to subdue him. “We were told that he ran and started to attack a security guard and the security guard somewhat fought back and got the best of him,” said Eric Sherman, a Reseda resident. Lyft Driver Is Charged With Rape And Kidnapping Of Los Angeles Woman
A Lyft driver has been charged with the kidnapping and rape of a Los Angeles woman after picking her up from a bar last October. The Los Angeles County district attorney announced the charges Friday for 38-year-old Octavio Alvarez Gomez. At roughly 10 p.m. on Oct. 2, 2018, Gomez was summoned to drive a woman to Van Nuys, prosecutors said. But instead of dropping the victim off at her requested location, Gomez continued to drive to a secluded location where he raped his passenger, prosecutors said. The charges include one count each of kidnapping to commit rape and rape of an unconscious person. Gomez faces a possible maximum sentence of life in state prison. His bail has been set at $1.1 million. In August, a 25-year-old San Bruno woman told investigators that a Lyft driver raped her in his vehicle after she passed out from intoxication in his backseat.

How California's ‘Red Flag' Law Thwarted Gun Threats At Sunnyvale Ford, Netflix, And Palo Alto City Hall

Just days after a fired employee fatally shot his supervisors at the Ford Store Morgan Hill this June, an eerily similar threat emerged at the automaker's Sunnyvale dealership: A mechanic about to lose his job for drunkenness had recently threatened to kill a supervisor and brought guns to work. The owner of the Sunnyvale dealership called police, but there was not enough evidence to charge the fired worker with making criminal threats. So authorities turned to California's “red flag” law, getting a court order that allowed them to temporarily take away the 54-year-old mechanic's cache of seven rifles, three shotguns, four handguns and high-capacity ammunition magazines. “It's a very effective tool in preventing acts of violence involving firearms,” said Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety Chief Phan S. Ngo. “Potentially we prevented somebody from going and doing major damage with his arsenal, and I'd rather go this route of prevention than responding to a mass shooting incident.”

We have a great workforce and great capabilities.” The council voted unanimously for his appointment, 11-0. He will earn about $400,000 annually. City Councilman Joe Buscaino said he was confident that Adams has the integrity to lead the department going forward.
