CHP Officer Injured In Wild 215 Freeway Shootout Heads Home
A California Highway Patrol officer was released from the hospital Thursday after being critically injured in a wild shootout on the 215 Freeway in August. Officer Robert Paul left the hospital surrounded by his colleagues, making his way through a gauntlet of hugs and admiring smiles. "To see one of our officers recovering, after all he's been through, is absolutely beautiful and we're all excited," said CHP Officer Ramon Duran. Paul has had multiple surgeries and spent months in physical therapy, and those who know him say his determination will only help in his recovery. On August 12, CHP Officer Andre Moye was shot and killed by a driver he pulled over. Though mortally wounded, he managed to call to help. Multiple officers responded, including Paul and his colleague Ryan Smith, who was also injured in the fight.

2 West Virginia Deputies Shot, 1 Suspect Dead
A West Virginia man used his father as cover in a tight-quarters gunfight with police that ended with two deputies shot, charges against the dad and the son killed, authorities said. Cabell County Sheriff Chuck Zerkle said the shootout happened Wednesday as a team of officers were attempting to serve a search warrant for a stolen gun at a home in Ona, West Virginia. As police were trying to bust down a door, the father-son team got into position. The father, 56-year-old Michael Lane Pinkerman, braced himself against the door. His son, Michael Pinkerman II, readied the stolen 9 mm Beretta. The door swung open. The younger Pinkerman rapidly emptied the handgun. Deputies returned fire. The father stood in the middle of the mayhem. The aftermath: Pinkerman was dead, his father was wounded and two deputies were down.

Police Get Possible Break In Hit-And-Run That Injured Bicyclist
Police might have gotten a new clue in their search for a driver who seriously injured a bicyclist after striking him in Silver Lake last week. Since police released the jarring video that shows the driver of a Mini Cooper striking a bicyclist head-on before driving away last Friday night, they have been looking for the driver that sent 57-year-old David Molina to the hospital with multiple broken bones. “All of a sudden, I just see the Mini Cooper slam into the bicyclist, and that's when I stood up and said, “Oh my god, that car's at my shop,'” George, the owner of Route 66 Collision Center in Glendale, said. George, who did not want his last name shared, said after watching Tuesday night's KCAL9 newscast he knew that the Mini Cooper brought to his shop Saturday morning was involved in the crash. Investigators with the Los Angeles Police Department said they believe this was the car involved in the hit-and-run based on the damage they saw in the video. They said the owner of the Mini Cooper is a woman who works at Los Angeles Unified School District, which a detective said the district confirmed.

Getty Fire Burning In Brentwood Is 52% Contained, With Most Evacuated Residents Able To Go Home
Los Angeles firefighters Thursday morning surrounded more of the Getty fire that was burning in the hills above Brentwood, while thousands of residents have been allowed back into their homes. The Los Angeles Fire Department said the fire was 52% contained by 7 p.m. Thursday, with the charred acreage holding steady at 745 acres. Since Tuesday afternoon, any open flames have been extinguished, but firefighters were making sure no ember kicked up another firestorm. After days of intense winds, firefighters working in the Brentwood foothills have gotten a little reprieve in the last couple of days, with Santa Ana winds not nearly as strong as forecast. The reduced fire threat meant nearly all of the neighborhoods evacuated since early Monday morning were opened back up to residents Wednesday afternoon, city officials said. More residents were allowed back in Thursday morning. Among the neighborhoods still closed are those at the top of Tigertail Road, north of Deerbrook Lane and on Bluegrass Lane.

No Rain In Sight For L.A. Area For Next Few Weeks; Critical Fire Weather Warnings Extended
The unusually long Santa Ana wind event is expected to ease Thursday evening. And with it, the fire risk will be reduced as well. But there is not much good news on the horizon, with forecasters seeing little chance of rain in the next few weeks. Critical fire weather warnings have been extended through Friday night for the windiest spots of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, continuing red-flag conditions for an additional 24 hours. The red-flag warnings, which sound the alarm for high winds, dry air and parched vegetation, will persist for inland mountains and valleys in Los Angeles and Ventura counties and the Santa Clarita Valley because of ongoing winds from the northeast and very dry air.

LA Creating Program For Home-Sharing At Rent-Stabilized Units
The Los Angeles City Council approved, on Wednesday, Oct. 30, the creation of a citywide pilot program to allow owners who live on-site at their rent-stabilized complexes to book their personal unit for home-sharing. The City Attorney's Office and the Department of City Planning will provide recommendations for the program going forward, including enforcement and budgetary issues, which will be brought back to the council for consideration in the near future. Rent-stabilized units are currently prohibited from being used for home-sharing. City staff said they would work with the Housing and Community Investment Department to ensure the properties are owner-occupied, as Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez said she doesn't want RSO units to be subject to a system that “we don't have the mechanisms of enforcing.”
