Four Los Angeles police officers were injured early Monday when the pursuit of carjacking suspects ended in a violent crash on a freeway onramp in Pacoima, authorities said. Officers were patrolling the Tujunga area about 4:20 a.m. when they saw a white Mercedes-Benz ML350 SUV and decided to run the vehicle's license plate number. The license plate check revealed that the SUV had been stolen in an armed carjacking in the Bay Area on Sunday, said Officer Jeff Lee. Hate Crimes Dip Slightly, But Surge Against Latinos, FBI Reports
Hate crimes targeting people in 2018 surged to their highest levels in 16 years despite a slight overall dip in the number of hate crimes, the FBI said in a report released Tuesday. The FBI's tally, which used data submitted by more than 2,000 police departments and law enforcement agencies, logged 7,120 hate crimes. The total is 55 lower than 2017, a decline of less than 1%. The drop is the first time hate crimes have gone down in four years. But it's tiny when compared to long-term trends in increased hate crimes. Aside from last year, the total number of hate crimes the FBI reported is higher than every year since 2008. “The numbers, on the surface, seem to remain relatively flat overall,” said Brian Levin, director of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at Cal State San Bernardino. “But underneath the data there are some interesting trends happening.”

Firefighters Stop Growth Of 34-Acre Barham Fire In The Hollywood Hills
A 34-acre brush fire broke out in the Hollywood Hills on Saturday afternoon, LAFD said. The blaze, named the Barham Fire, started just before 2 p.m. on the 3600 block of Barham Boulevard, according to the department. While the wildfire remained active, firefighters were able to stop its growth before 5 p.m., and the blaze was 15% contained, the LAFD said. The fire was originally reported to have burned through 3 acres before it grew to consume about 34 acres. Heavy brush was burning at a slow rate with no wind blowing in the area, LAFD said. "Our firefighters are making a very aggressive attack but it's very high brush, about 6 feet plus, very dense, so it's really difficult for us to be able to get into those areas," said Deputy Chief Armando Hogan of LAFD.
