The fatal crash happened at 7 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 2, on Ellendale Place, just south of Adams Boulevard. Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Frank Clark faces a second gun charge related to his June arrest in Los Angeles for allegedly carrying an Uzi in his vehicle. TMZ Sports reports that Clark, who was originally charged with illegal possession of a firearm, had a count of possession of an assault weapon added by Los Angeles prosecutors this week. Clark is due in court for a hearing for the June arrest on Jan. 17, one week after the Chiefs' season is scheduled to end, TMZ reports. He has pleaded not guilty. "Officers noticed a bag with an Uzi sticking out in plain sight in the car," LAPD spokesman Tony Im told the Associated Press in June. The 28-year-old was released on $35,000 bond, and his attorney, Alex Spiro, said the gun belonged to the NFL player's bodyguard. "We are aware of the matter, which will be reviewed under the NFL's personal conduct policy," NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy told the AP in June. TMZ reported in July that Clark was also arrested by California Highway Patrol on March 13 after a similar incident, where he was stopped by police for not having a front license plate when officers saw the "muzzle of a handgun" sticking out of a bag. He has also pleaded not guilty in this case. FOX News

In A Bid To Stop Overdose Deaths, California Could Allow Drug Use At Supervised Sites
Diamond Mendoza rolled up the sleeve of her shirt — a yellow tee decorated with an exuberant rendering of the Mona Lisa — to show the scars of abscesses that had been lanced and healed. She wants to get off heroin, which she first turned to decades ago after a heartbreak. She wants to get a certificate to prove herself to employers, maybe become a phlebotomist or a nurse. She relishes the idea of handing over that paper and saying, "Hey — I may be a drug user, but I got a certificate." But above all, Mendoza said, "I hope to live longer." Deaths from drug overdoses have surged during the pandemic, claiming more than 90,000 lives last year across the country, according to federal data. As the numbers have soared, many experts, advocates and lawmakers have promoted an idea still fresh to the United States: giving people a safe place to inject drugs under supervision. In California, it would be the most dramatic step to date for government and health officials in pursuing the philosophy of harm reduction, which seeks pragmatic ways to reduce the harmful effects of drug use. The idea was shot down three years ago by Gov. Jerry Brown, who vetoed a bill to try out such sites in San Francisco and said that "enabling illegal and destructive drug use will never work." Police: 2 Florida Officers Wounded In Shootout, Gunman Killed
Two Florida police officers were wounded Friday morning during a shootout before returning fire and killing the gunman, officials said. Both Doral police officers were expected to survive, police spokesman Rey Valdes said. The officers were responding to some dispute between drivers, where one car was chasing the other, officials said. The man being chased was attempting to reach the nearby Miami-Dade Police Department headquarters, which is located along a busy street in Doral. The chaser lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tree, police said. He then exited his vehicle and immediately opened fire on the officers. One officer was injured in the face by shrapnel or broken glass, and the other was shot in the chest, arm and leg, officials said. The second officer was taken to a Miami trauma center. Also wounded in the shooting was a man riding in panel truck that had no apparent connection to confrontation. Officials didn't immediately know whether that man was hit in the leg by the officers or the gunman. Associated Press

Magnitude 3.6 Earthquake Reported Near Los Angeles
A magnitude 3.6 earthquake was reported Sunday at 7:01 a.m. less than a mile from downtown Los Angeles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The earthquake occurred less than a mile from Commerce, less than a mile from East Los Angeles, one mile from Maywood and one mile from Bell. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10.7 miles, which reduced how widely it was felt. There were no immediate reports of damage. According to the USGS, it was felt from Santa Clarita to Orange County. “What you feel in a small earthquake like this morning depends on how close you are to it. Because it is 10 miles down, everyone is at least 10 miles from it. The closer you are, the sharper the motion,” quake expert Lucy Jones said on Twitter. The USGS initially reported the magnitude as 3.9 and the depth of the quake as 10.6 miles, and later adjusted the figures to magnitude 3.6 and a depth of 10.7 miles. In the last 10 days, there has been one earthquake of magnitude 3.0 or greater centered nearby. Los Angeles Times
