LAPPL Discusses How Gascon's Policies Allowed Convicted Felon to be Out of Custody When He Killed 2 El Monte Police Officers.
NewsNation Video

Every murder is tragic, preventable ones are inexcusable
On June 14, 2022, El Monte Police Officers Santana and Paredes were brutally murdered by Justin Flores. In their final sacrifice, the officers boldly rushed towards danger where others would not. Under California law, Flores should have been in a state prison cell on the day he murdered the two officers. Instead, because of George Gascón's policies, he was in a hotel room in El Monte beating his girlfriend until two officers responded for the call for help. Now two officers are dead. Horrific Details Emerge About Deadly Ambush Of California Officers
The rookie and his training officer knocked on the door of an El Monte motel room, where they'd been called to investigate a report of domestic violence. Once they got the victim out of the room, Officer Joseph Santana went in, followed by his training officer, Cpl. Michael Paredes. Justin Flores, the man inside, backed himself into the bathroom, law enforcement sources told the L.A. Times. Within about 12 seconds, one source said, Flores ambushed the officers with gunfire. Paredes went down first. Coroner's officials said both officers died of a gunshot wound to the head. The killings brought grief and heartache to the suburb east of downtown L.A., where both officers grew up and chose to stay as first responders. “They're El Monte homegrown,” Mayor Jessica Ancona said this week. “They're our boys.” The horrific details about the moments that led up to the killings and the wild shootout that followed emerged Friday as friends and family of the officers gathered to mourn. The sources who described the scene asked to remain anonymous because they were not authorized to speak publicly. The incident began around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday when Paredes and Santana, along with an unidentified sergeant, responded to the Siesta Inn, a single-story stucco motel in El Monte. After Paredes and Santana went down, the law enforcement sources said, Flores ran out of bullets and took a gun off one of the fallen officers. He left the room firing at the sergeant. Mom Pleads Not Guilty To 2021 Murders Of Her 3 Kids In Reseda
A woman who allegedly admitted drowning her three young children in a Reseda apartment last year pleaded not guilty Monday to three murder charges stemming from their deaths. Liliana Carrillo, 32, is charged in the April 10, 2021, killings of her 6-month-old daughter Sierra, 3-year-old daughter Joanna and 2-year-old son Terry. The criminal complaint includes an allegation that Carrillo used a knife as a deadly and dangerous weapon on her youngest daughter, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. Police didn't disclose a motive for the killings, but court filings showed there was a bitter custody dispute between Carrillo and the children's father, Erik Denton. The children had been staying with Carrillo, his ex-girlfriend. Fearful for their safety, Denton petitioned a court for custody March 1, 2021, alleging Carrillo was delusional and had taken the kids and refused to tell him where they were. Carrillo, in turn, filed a restraining order against him and claimed Denton was an alcoholic who may have sexually abused their eldest child. FOX 11

Dave Chappelle Is Not Happy DA Won't Charge Accused Onstage Attacker With Felony
Dave Chappelle's lawyer says the comedian is unhappy with Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón's decision not to file felony charges against the man who allegedly attacked him on stage. "It's a travesty of justice that Gascón is refusing to prosecute this case as a felony,'' Gabriel Colwell told the New York Post on Friday. "The city attorney, who filed the case, is doing his job but DA Gascón should also do his job and charge this as a felony. "... Entertainers in LA need to know this is a justice system that will protect them. There is no question here that when someone is violently assaulted by another in possession of a deadly weapon that it should be charged as a felony.'' Colwell echoed those comments to Rolling Stone magazine, telling the publication: "This is what Mr. Chappelle wants. Mr. Chappelle wants this case charged as a felony. ... Ten thousand people saw Dave Chappelle assaulted on stage at the Hollywood Bowl last Tuesday night, and the assailant had a deadly weapon on him. The fact that this isn't charged as a felony case by the DA is insane.'' Isaiah Lee, 23, was charged Thursday by the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office with single misdemeanor counts of battery, possession of a weapon with intent to assault, unauthorized access to the stage area during a performance and commission of an act that delays an event or interferes with a performer. He appeared in court Tuesday for a bail review hearing at which bail remained set at $30,000. NBC 4 Washington

$60,000 Worth Of Meth Hidden In Child Car Seats Is Seized At California Checkpoint
U.S. Customs and Border Patrol Protection officers arrested a United States citizen who attempted to smuggle $60,000 worth of methamphetamine in child booster seats at a checkpoint in Murrieta, the agency said. While conducting a vehicle stop north of the Newton Azrak Border Patrol Station on Interstate 15 on Wednesday, agents intercepted a car with two adults and their four children. Several packages containing a “white crystal substance” was found inside the three booster seats, and the substance then tested positive for methamphetamine, according to the agency. There was a total of 26.9 pounds of the substance found in the vehicle, equating to a total street value of $60,000, authorities said. According to the agency, the driver of the vehicle was turned over to the Inland Crackdown Allied Taskforce for prosecution and the vehicle was seized by Border Patrol. An east Alabama sheriff's deputy was killed Monday in a line-of-duty traffic crash. Chambers County Sheriff Sid Lockhart identified the deputy as J'Mar Abel. He was 24. Abel was assisting the Roanoke Police Department in a chase just after 3:30 p.m. when he lost control of his patrol vehicle - a 2017 Ford Explorer - on County Road 278 and wrecked. Officer Shot, Teen Killed At Unpermitted DC Event
A 15-year-old boy was shot to death and three adults, including a police officer, were wounded after a musical event lacking a permit erupted into chaos on a District of Columbia street Sunday night, police said. The wounded police officer and the other adults were recovering at hospitals, Metropolitan Police Chief Robert J. Contee III told reporters at the scene of the shooting. The incident took place near 14th and U Streets NW, about 2 miles north of the White House. Social media had promoted a free music event known as Moechella and several hundred people were gathering in the area around 6 p.m., Contee said. Police arrived to assist the crowd and people stayed mostly to the sidewalks as music played from a truck, he said. In the hours that followed a fight broke out, and then an incident of an undetermined nature caused people to scatter, Contee said. Police shut down the gathering, he said, because the event appeared to have become unsafe. Several people were hurt in the rush to leave the area and were being assisted by public safety first responders when the shooting occurred, Contee said. He said the events occurred between 6 and 8:30 p.m. Associated Press

COVID Hospitalizations Continue To Move LA County Closer To Indoor Mask Mandate
COVID hospitalizations continue to move Los Angeles County closer to an indoor mask mandate. The county reported an increase Saturday of 639 patients in hospitals for the coronavirus. In Orange County, there were 178 patents in Orange County for COVID, and in Riverside County, there were 99 patients hospitalized for COVID. On Saturday, CDC advisors voted to recommend Pfizer and Moderna shots for infants as young as six months old. Experts say the protection outweighs the risk. "I feel comfortable in saying that vaccinating will be a net benefit," Dr. Oliver Brooks from the CDC Advisory Committee said. LA County is expected to give out the vaccines as early as Tuesday.  CBS 2

COVID Vaccines For Kids Under 5 Could Be Administered By LA County Next Week
Los Angeles County health officials were preparing to begin offering pediatric COVID-19 vaccine doses to children younger than age 5, now that the CDC has recommended them. The county is prepared to begin administering the Pfizer vaccine doses as early as Tuesday, according to the county Department of Public Health, assuming the director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention gives the final OK to the shots, as anticipated. Shots will be available for children as young as 6 months old. But some parents are unsure if they will be having their infants get vaccinated. "Trying to find that common ground of, 'ok, I agree with it, I don't agree with it.' How are we going to figure this out? It's really difficult," Alyssa Freeman said. County health officials noted that young children are considered at lower risk of becoming severely ill or dying from COVID, but they said the risk is higher among unvaccinated children. They also contend that unvaccinated children are at higher risk of developing Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children, or MIS-C. CBS 2

LA City Council Poised To Approve Law Banning Bicycle Assembly On Sidewalks
The Los Angeles City Council is poised to approve an ordinance Tuesday to prohibit people from assembling or disassembling bicycles in the public right-of-way. A motion to have the ordinance drafted was introduced by Councilman Joe Buscaino and passed the City Council 10-4 on Feb. 8, with council members Marqueece Harris-Dawson, Nithya Raman, Curren Price and Mike Bonin opposed. Harris-Dawson said at the time that the potential law could have gotten him arrested as a child. The ordinance was tentatively approved on June 14 by an 11-3 vote, with Raman, Bonin and Price again opposing it, but Harris-Dawson voting yes. The ordinance required unanimous approval to pass last week, but it will be considered again Tuesday, when it needs a simple majority support. The draft ordinance is modeled after one already in effect in Long Beach to prohibit the assembly, disassembly, sale, offer of sale, distribution of bicycles and bicycle parts on public property or within the public right-of-way.
