Bass, Caruso Head Into Election Day As Los Angeles Mayoral Race Tightens
An expensive and at-times contentious campaign to become the next mayor of Los Angeles ends Tuesday, with polls indicating the race between Rep. Karen Bass and developer Rick Caruso tightened in its final weeks. Bass, a six-term member of Congress, is seeking to become the first woman and only the second Black person to lead Los Angeles. Caruso, a billionaire, is looking to win a campaign that's on track to spend over $100 million — much of it from Caruso's own fortune — to propel him into contention. Bass held a comfortable lead in the polls just a month ago, but recent surveys ahead of Election Day show that Caruso has closed the gap considerably. Bass led Caruso 45% to 41% in a UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll conducted from Oct. 25-31 — co-sponsored by the Los Angeles Times — with the gap within the margin of error. A Southern California News Group poll conducted by J. Wallin Opinion Research from Oct. 15-17 found a 3-point lead for Caruso, which was also within the margin of error. MyNewsLA

Seaman Sentenced To 20 Years For Fatal Stabbing Aboard LA-Bound Container Ship
A Philippines national who fatally stabbed a fellow crew member on a container ship en route from Shanghai to Los Angeles was sentenced Monday to 20 years in federal prison. Michael Monegro, 44, pleaded guilty in May in L.A. federal court to one count of committing an act of violence against a person onboard a ship that is likely to endanger the vessel's safe navigation, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Monegro could have received up to life behind bars. Monegro was working as a seaman aboard the MSC Ravenna, a 153,000-gross-ton Liberian-flagged container ship, on Sept. 20, 2020 — when the ship was 80 nautical miles from Southern California, nearing the end of its two-week voyage from Shanghai to the Port of Los Angeles. According to prosecutors, Monegro and other crew members were in a dressing room on the ship's upper deck when Monegro spotted his direct supervisor in an adjacent hallway. In full view of other crew members, Monegro began stabbing the victim in the hallway, prosecutors said.MyNewsLA

16 Arrested In L.A. County For Soliciting Prostitution
Police arrested 15 people and one “pimp” for soliciting prostitution during an undercover operation in Claremont. The sting operation targeted the Indian Hill area and the 10 Freeway on Friday. Claremont Police says these areas have received “multiple complaints” from residents, local business owners and passersby regarding heightened prostitution activity. Three undercover officers posed as prostitutes during the operation, soliciting people who wished to engage in sexual acts. A total of 15 people were taken into custody for allegedly soliciting prostitution and sex acts. One suspect, Jose Berrios, 39, from Lake Elsinore, was arrested for attempting to “pimp and pander” the undercover officers. Berrios is also a registered sex offender for the same charge, police said. Berrios allegedly told the undercover officers that he “would teach them to make real money.” The officers ignored him and walked away, but Berrios began chasing the officers in his vehicle, becoming aggressive, police said. Woman Used Her Car As A Shield, Provided Aid After 2 New Jersey Cops Were Shot
A woman has been hailed a hero after assisting two Newark police officers who were shot while serving a warrant last week. News 12 New Jersey spoke to the unnamed woman who moved her car in the path of incoming gunfire to help shield the officers from getting struck again. Officer Johnny Aquino had been hit in the neck and shoulder, and Officer Jabrill Paul had been shot in the leg. While more gunfire could be heard in the background, the woman remained at the scene, assisting Aquino by pressing a towel to his wound. “I wasn't even thinking about myself. I just put him first,” she told News 12. "And I wasn't even thinking about bullets, the only thing I saw was him. And that's what I was focused on, saving him.” The woman told the news platform she is a nurse who works with mentally ill patients. “[It was] natural for me to go help someone. That's what I do,” she told News 12. “I would want someone to do that for me, my family, my daughter, my husband, my sister.” PoliceOne

New Report Unveils Cyber Threats To Law Enforcement
The police are in both the public and criminal eye, which makes them a target for cyberattacks. Police data, including information about officers, is at risk of exposure during cyberattacks. Similarly, disruptions to law enforcement networks as a result of cyberattacks, including ransomware, can prevent officers from conducting their duties in an efficient, reliable manner. Motorola Solutions' threat intelligence team, a dedicated team of employees who proactively monitor for and report on cyber threats to public safety, conducted research and analysis throughout 2021 and into 2022 on how cyberattacks impact law enforcement, resulting in the report "Public Safety: Cyber Threats to Law Enforcement." During this time, the team found that of all cyberattacks reported against law enforcement, nearly half (49%) affected U.S. agencies. This number is slightly higher when compared to cyberattacks against public safety as a whole, where results show U.S-based victims made up 40% of the total. PoliceOne

City Council Set To Vote On Venice Bridge Home Lease Extension
The Los Angeles City Council is set to vote on a lease for the extension of the Venice Bridge Home despite community pushback. On Wednesday, council member will vote on whether or not to accept a recommendation by the Department of General Services (GSD) to extend a lease for the ABH located at 100 Sunset Blvd. The Venice Stakeholders Association (VSA) is asking the Council to refrain from voting on the extension until the City obtains a Coastal Development Permit from the California Coastal Commission. The ABH opened in February of 2020 and, as stated on Councilmember Mike Bonin's council website, was only supposed to last a maximum of three years. In June, however, Bonin asked to extend the lease for the ABH. "The ABHs were proposed because it was taking too long to bring on the HHH units," stated Mark Ryavec, president of the VSA, a non-profit organization committed to civic improvement in the Venice neighborhood.  Westside Current
