Tonight's special guest is Jerome Elam, child abuse survivor writer for the Washington Times, Communities section. Mr Elam says, "I have struggled against many things in my life including childhood sexual abuse and somehow I found a way to survive." Raised in the South, he joined the United States Marine Corps at the age of seventeen and spent the next eight years seeing the world. After his enlistment was finished he attended college and graduated to work in the Biotechnology sector. Jerome continues, "Writing is my passion and it keeps me in touch with the wealth everyone holds deep inside their hearts and minds." Two recent samples of his writing can be found on the NAASCA web site under our Feature Articles section. One is entitled "The tragedy of youth suicide: Children searching for hope" in which Mr Elam discusses his own "successful" suicide. The second article "An end to silence: Child sex abuse victims speaking out" has an appeal that can often be heard from NAASCA members. It's directed to those of us who have survived child abuse being the voice for the still suffering children who have no voice.

Special guest Michelle Bless
Friday

8pm EST, 5pm PAC

recommended show
Tonight's special guest is Michelle Bless, survivor, activist and author of the book "Out of the Darkness: the Michelle Bless Story" in which a young girl is abused by her family and ostracized for being associated with Satan. Out of the Darkness is her story of redemption. Born in the northeastern United States to parents from the Caribbean, author Michelle Bless was raised in a home of violence and suspicion. Her father beat her mother and siblings but spared Michelle because of her perceived association with Satan. Even so, this did not save her from other abuses: she witnessed incidents of violence, incest and other horrible, unthinkable acts. One hot summer day in 1997, Michelle writes, she "was introduced to the Lord and denounced Satan," thus beginning the process of giving her life to the Lord. After two years of demonic attacks, she was fully delivered and never looked back. Today she lives for the Lord. Ms Bless says her firsthand knowledge of how low a life can plummet to the depths of despair enables her to understand and relate to what others are facing as they struggle to find God in their lives. Michelle is on a mission to bring as many lost souls to God as possible.

Special guest Sue Julsen
Wednesday
4/25/2012
8pm EST, 5pm PAC

recommended show
Tonight's special guest is Sue Julsen from Nevada, a survivor and thriver and author of "Bitter Memories." Largely autobiographical, Ms Julsen has chosen to use fictional names so as to protect some of those in the story from the horrors that actually occurred. Abducted by her father when she was three, the book's main character, Sarah, found herself in a world of criminal neglect and unfathomable oppression as her father and stepmother perpetrated more and more horrible acts of verbal, mental and sexual abuse on the innocent girl. So continually terrified was Sarah, that she began to form separate personalities so that she herself did not have to face the hideous reality of her day to day life. Only through the nightmare pictures that the other personalities sometimes presented to her while she slept did Sarah have any hint about the horrific abuse she was being subjected to. The personalities would block out time for Sarah and bear the horror of the experiences themselves so that their dear Sarah would not have to. This tale of the author's early life, a life on the run, featuring starvation, fear and molestation, is a truly unnerving and gripping account of the extremes of neglect and mistreatment a child can undergo. "Bitter Memories" is dedicated to all adult survivors of abuse and is written with the hope that exposing these horrors will help to prevent them from happening to others. "Trophy Murders" is the fictionalized sequel to her first book, and she is currently working on the third book in this series.

Monday
4/23/2012
8pm EST, 5pm PAC

recommended show
Tonight's special guest is Lorena Noe from Maryland, child abuse survivor and author of "Daddy's Secret; Til Death Do Us Part." A true story of betrayal, incest, and healing, the narrative describes an average little girl born into a family of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. Lorena's story is about her triumphant struggle of survival and healing! Her mother was nineteen, and her father was twenty, when she was born, and shortly after her birth her father enlisted in the Marines, and her mother went to Virginia to work. Her grandmother became her mother image for four years, and gave her the stability of a strong Christian foundation. After a highly successful career as a business woman, Noe's goals now are to help children and adults who are victims of child abuse. Lorena hopes that as a survivor, she can now get the public to see the private struggle anyone can fall victim to. Ms Noe writes, "Child abuse is more than bruises and broken bones. While physical abuse might be the most visible sign, other types of abuse, such as emotional abuse or child neglect, also leave deep, long lasting scars. A history of a childhood abuse is not a life sentence. There is hope, healing, and a chance to recover the self lost in childhood." Drawing on her own experience as a survivor of emotional neglect, Lorena Noe demonstrates that through healing she can help lead you through grieving your lost childhood, to become your own parent, and integrate the healing aspects of spiritual, physical, and emotional recovery into your adult life.

recommended show
Tonight's special guest is Justin Berry, 26, a child abuse survivor from California, who was featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show in 2006, and now devotes himself to fighting child pornography on the Internet. At 13 years old, Justin was a typical "boy next door." Between homework and band practice, he found time to run a legitimate small business creating websites. A self-described "computer nerd," Justin was excited to get an inexpensive webcam. By hooking up his webcam, Justin unintentionally became a fresh face in a dark world where men prey on vulnerable teenagers and children. He had no idea that his new friends were adults — an online community of pedophiles discussing strategy, sharing advice and carefully planning his seduction. By age 16, Justin's young face had become extremely popular among Internet pedophiles. Fans began asking to meet him in person. At first Justin enjoyed his website's financial success, but he began using drugs and found his life spiraling out of control. He didn't know who to turn to... until he met Kurt Eichenwald, a reporter for The New York Times, the man who was to eventually able to help Justin turn his life back around. Justin's story, while shocking, is only one case in a huge industry that is destroying hundreds of children's lives. "They are being lured into it from their bedrooms," Kurt says. Justin says he is as surprised as anybody by the dark turn his life took at age 13. "I never would have guessed that would happen to me," he says. "This can happen to any kid." recommended show
Tonight's special guest is Monica Harmon from Los Angeles, one of Bill's long-time friends and fellow community-policing advocate. Monica has recently been devoting her seemingly unending energy to an Anti-Bullying campaign. Partnering with the Los Angeles Police Department, the LA Unified School District, local politicians and other community members, Monica has been making presentations at local public schools, parks and town-hall style meetings. She uses inter-active techniques to carry the message to kids that bullying in person and in cyber space is unacceptable behavior, and giving them tools and techniques to combat the problem. In recent years, bullying has been brought to the forefront of society due to the fact that media outlets have highlighted various tragic deaths as a result of bullying. There is a global fight against bullying, not to take it, not to promote it, not to engage in it. At the end of Harmon’s presentation, she has all the students stand up and make a pledge, “I am a strong student. I'm a leader. I will treat others with respect. I refuse to bully others and I promise to tell an adult when I see bullying. I refuse to watch, I refuse to laugh, I refuse to join in. I will be a good role model, I will not make others feel bad. I'm a do-something person, not a do-nothing person. I will help change my school. Sticking up for someone is the right thing to do. I will not post negative comments on the computer. I will stand up and speak out against bullying, and I will make a difference in my school”

Tonight's special guest is Don Dymer of Florida, representing "The Diana Screen" from Single Source Services. The Diana Screen is an innovation far beyond criminal background checks. It is an easy to use, risk management tool that will help you keep your agency's children safe from sexual abuse. Behind The Diana Screen are 18 years of research, 6 NIMH grants, and 2 pilot studies with the Episcopal Church Pension Fund and The Boys & Girls Clubs of America. The Diana Screen reduces the risk that your group's children will be molested and reduces the risk that your group will face sexual misconduct lawsuits. Named after a little girl who grew up in foster care yet was sexually abused by a caregiver, a man whose actions went unsuspected for over 30 years. Despite the love of her adoptive parents, Diana and her family suffered a final tragedy when she ended her own life. In honor of Diana, and those who have survived child sexual abuse, the screen designed to protect children is named The Diana Screen. Most victims of childhood sexual abuse never report their abuse. Their abusers are never charged and are employed or volunteer and continue their reign of terror on the children, in the work or volunteer environment you are providing. The Diana Screen helps stop a pedophile from gaining access to children within those organizations that use the tool.

Conceived with an initial investment of $2,000 the Foundation's mission is to stop crimes against children. One of today's most passionate activists when it comes to the horrors, the shame and the preventative steps we can all take when it comes to sexual abuse, is aspiring actor and model, Drew Carrillo. Many know Carrillo for his role in the movie "Vampires Suck," in which he played the part of a cast member of "Jersey Shore." He also has been featured in many popular television advertisements, the most recent being the "NERF or Nothing" toy campaign. In an interview with San Diego Gay & Lesbian News, Drew who is now openly gay, tells his "backstory" .. that he was raped at the age of 16 while a dedicated member of a prominent movement called Teen Mania Ministries. Coming to terms with one's sexuality can be very dramatic and tough due to gender societal parameters. To make matters worse for Drew and other young followers like him, Teen Mania Ministries spends millions of dollars on educational materials telling members of the church that homosexual men are, in fact, often that way because they were raped. Drew was featured on the Dr Phil Show in 2005.

Tonight's SPECIAL GUEST is Jason Lee of Atlanta, a survivor of childhood sexual abuse he experienced while a Boy Scout. He was recently involved in a campaign to keep his abuser from getting parole. In 1995, Lee's abuser, Don Corley pled guilty to multiple counts as a child molester. He was sentenced to 30 years in jail. He came up for parole on January 31, 2012, but was denied, largely because of outstanding public support garnered in par through the web site www.30is30.com where the idea's presented that Don Corley should serve his full sentence. "30 years is 30 years" says the site. Readers will some enlightening encounter quotes from an interview with Mr Corley that show the mind of a child molester, including "“There was still that longing, that need,” how he'd “target” boys to become their “special friend.” He goes on to admit “There's nothing to cure this behavior” and about his "Dark Side" and how he's "a parents worst nightmare." Also included on the web site is the testimony of one of Mr Corley's victims, who writes, "From 1986 to 1992 I was molested by a man who most thought was a “pillar of our community” .. a leader in my Boy Scouts troop, a leader in my church. He had everyone fooled." And he goes on, "I think there are two kinds of child molesters. One is the trench-coat-wearing, playground-stalking, child-stealing kind of person. He's quick and violent. The other kind is the serial molester – he embeds himself in the community, wins the trust of families and children, and abuses that position of power to commit the molestation. Don Corley is the second type."

Tonight's SPECIAL GUEST is Irene van der Zande, who was inspired to found Kidpower by a frightening incident in 1985. As she was leading a group of young kids on a field trip, a man charged towards them and threatened to take one of the children. Irene put herself between the man and the children, including her own son and daughter, and shouted. The children were unhurt and soon recovered - but Irene was shaken and determined to do something to help people, especially children, build the skills and confidence to take charge of their own safety. Today, Kidpower is a growing international organization. Worldwide it has served over 2 million children, teens, and adults, including those with special needs, through workshops and educational resources. The future will bring more local services, more centers in countries all over the world, more books (see: The Kid Power Book) and educational materials, and more chances for Kidpower to affect the lives of people everywhere. For a comprehensive description of the many people involved in the creation and success of Kidpower, see Kidpower - a Tapestry Woven by Many Different Hands.

Tonight's SPECIAL GUEST is Angela Williams, abuse survivor, author of "From Sorrow to Sapphires" and founder of the Voice Today non profit, at www.VoiceToday.org, a movement to break the silence and the cycle of child sexual abuse. The VOICE mission is to bring awareness to the silent epidemic through awareness campaigns, educational and healing programs. She has been a child advocate for many years, trying to right the wrong done to her and millions of other adults. Ms Williams, a Georgian, says, "As a survivor of incest, suffering in silence for 14 years at the brutal hands of my stepfather, my passion has become helping others learn to break the silence barrier of child sexual abuse and to make a difference in the lives of children in the next generation." A faith based organization, the values of the Voice Today Movement include the belief that prayer is the power source against the demonic forces driving child sexual abuse, seeking to break the silence of child sexual abuse by fostering the VOICE Movement, a grass roots effort to educate adults, speak out unashamedly and provide healing support for survivors, and that will become a platform for social change. VOICE wants to change society's attitudes and actions that surround child sexual abuse, both locally and globally, by reaching as many people as possible, and seeks to shift the responsibility for preventing Child Sexual Abuse from the child to the adult. They want to empower survivors to find their voice and start the healing process.

Tonight's SPECIAL GUEST is Susan Saufoa-Dinino, of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is the founder of "Speaking Out Against Child Sexual Abuse, Inc" (www.speakingout-csa.com). In 2000, Susan was faced with a very real issue in which she was unfamiliar .. the horrifying truth and reality of child sexual abuse (CSA).  As with most people, she was naïve and uneducated on this topic, so she began to research the horrific crime. What she found was so disturbing that she had never felt so helpless. "Since that time," she writes, "I have been trying to figure out a way to help children who are Sexually Abused. Every single day across America, countless numbers of children are sexually violated. And there are so many obstacles to overcome in order to help just one child, much less the multitudes of Sexually Abused children. The task seemed impossible once I read the statistics and learned about the failures of the systems in place that are supposed to protect children. The truth is that we live in a fallen world in which many children are robbed of their innocence by Sexual Predators.

Tonight's SPECIAL GUEST is Patricia A. McKnight. Ms McKnight (Tricia) is a child abuse survivor, and is author of the recently published "My Justice." She's a talk show host on Blog Talk Radio and an activist with Dreamcatchers for Abused Children. Tricia struggles to overcome the cruelty of her childhood. The man who assaulted her, her stepfather, tortured her for twelve long years, and his torment destroyed everything good in her life for the next thirty years. Her path in life became one of continued violence against her and although she was able to achieve professional success, she could never fully heal from the trauma inside. Tricia was a strong survivor though and continued to push her way through life despite these crimes against her. The recently written review from Peter Thomas Senese says, "Patricia A. McKnight has written a masterpiece novel so well written, so important to society, and so enlightening for others - those who know abuse equally as to those who pursue their dreams and liberties - that her "My Justice" shook the very foundation of who I am and my own interactions in this world, as I asked myself, "Am I doing enough?" Unquestionably, "My Justice" is a Call-To-Arms against abuse and neglect, but it too is a critically important road map, a blue print if you will, for others to learn by in order to break the cycles of abuse often found in a person's life when abuse occurs and is sustained beginning at an early age."

Tonight's SPECIAL GUEST is Nick Bryant. Mr Bryant is author of "The Franklin Scandal" the story of a nationwide pedophile ring that pandered children to a cabal of the rich and powerful. The ring's pimps were a pair of political power brokers who had access to the highest levels of our government. Nebraska legislators nearly exposed the ring in 1990, but its unveiling had the potential to produce seismic political aftershocks. The legislators' efforts resulted in rash of mysterious deaths and the overpowering corruption of federal and local law enforcement, including the FBI, Secret Service, and Justice Department, effecting an immaculate cover-up of the trafficking network. The publisher is donating 50% of the book's proceeds to organizations that assist abused children. Author Nick Bryant writes, "The reality is that many perpetrators are not shady men in dirty, threadbare trench coats living in seedy hotels, but are, in fact, pillars of our community. Until our society addresses these facts and its institutions are willing to face embarrassment, instead of heaping more abuse upon victims, our national shame of rampant child abuse and its cover-up are unlikely to end." See the rough cut of an hour long documentary, "Conspiracy of Silence," funded by the Discovery Channel for UK viewing, but mysteriously pulled from its air date.

After 10 years of sexual abuse, including rape and sodomy, Stacey Lannert shot and killed her father on July 5, 1990, and was put in jail. In December 1992, she was convicted of first degree murder and armed criminal action. She was sentenced to life in prison without parole in Missouri. In January 2009, Missouri Governor Matt Blunt commuted her sentence. He told her he expected her to make a difference with her life. After 18 years in prison, Stacey's now living in St. Louis. She's telling her story so other women can learn from her mistakes. "I created Healing Sisters to allow other sexual abuse victors (we are victors, after all) the opportunity to experience the bond we share and the restoring powers gained from other people who have also suffered," says Stacey. "I believe that every child, woman and man who suffers from sexual abuse becomes a sister because we share a common bond, one of betrayal and suffering. We need one another in order to thrive, and maybe even to survive. I hope in my lifetime we can eradicate, wipe out, and destroy sexual abuse. That surely cannot to be too lofty of a goal, can it? Tonight's SPECIAL GUEST is Johnna Janis of San Diego. Ms Janis is working with an award winning filmmaker Sergio Myers to produce a documentary based on her life as a survivor of child sexual abuse. "Invisible Scars" is a woman's story of hope, healing, and resiliency. During this inspirational journey, she reveals the invisible scars that have negatively impacted her throughout her life. Like many other women and men, she was abused by people she trusted at various points in her life. At 5 she was traumatized for the first time, ruining her self esteem. In high school she was assaulted again. "Within months, I entered into a relationship with a much older man and dropped out of school," she says. He eventually became the father of her three children, but Johnna spent eleven years emotionally abused and manipulated in the marriage, battling depression, anxiety, fear, and guilt. "I felt ashamed about my past, unhappy with my present, and unworthy of a future. It nearly destroyed me. Fortunately, the love of my children gave me the inspiration to survive." Her documentary will explore the journey she and other child abuse victims travel. On the outside she is a mother, daughter, wife, and friend who appears strong and confident. However, on the inside she has struggled with acknowledging and accepting the ugly and shameful truths of her past that have haunted her for most of her life.

Addiction, shattered relation ships and failed careers followed. Mr Budinsky has worked hard for many years to get through the dark journey that was his life, and to emerge as a successful example of the miracle that can happen once a person enters into recovery. Tonight's SPECIAL GUEST is Mike Domitrz, founder and Executive Director of the The Date Safe Project. Over the past decade, more attention is being given to dangerous sexual behavior among our youth and to the crime of sexual assault – mainly due to cases and news stories concerning celebrities, middle schools, high schools, college campuses, and the military. Unfortunately, the public debates arising from such prominent cases often lead to even greater misunderstandings of what consent means; how to teach safer understandings of intimacy to teenagers and young adults; how sexual assault is defined; and how to honor survivors of sexual assault / rape. To help clear-up the various misconceptions about healthy dating, intimacy, consent, sex, respect, sexual assault, and honoring survivors, Mike Domitrz, personally prompted by the rape of his sister, founded The Date Safe Project, Inc. which provides parents, educators, educational institutions, students, military installations, community organizations, state agencies, faith-based institutions, and federal government resources, educational materials, and programming addressing consent, healthy intimacy, sexual education, sexual assault awareness, bystander intervention, and support for sexual assault survivors. Tonight's SPECIAL GUEST is Kimberly Day of Every Child Matters, a coalition that seeks to end child abuse. Centered in Washington, DC, Kim coordinates for the Protect Our Kids Act & Petition, now before the House and Senate, which seeks to create a National Commission on Child Abuse Fatalities. 2,500 American children are killed every year as a result of child abuse and 80 percent of those killed are under the age of four. Almost half are under age one. Ms Day says, "All it takes is a minute of your time to click here and sign the petition asking your member of congress to support this act, then send a letter to your Congressmembers." Much more must be done. The rate of child abuse fatalities continues to rise. An overhaul of the nation's child protection system is long overdue. The coalition's goal is to help prompt such an overhaul. Please also see We Can Do Better - a 24 page PDF filled with statistics, and the Coalition Fact Sheet.

Community
Matters

.

LACP.org's
radio talk show
all about: "Community Matters" - the radio show
with host Bill Murray, LA Community Policing founder (LACP.org)

Community based policing provides a forum for the dissemination of information, sharing of ideas and suggesting of ways Americans can become engaged in making our streets safer, & improve the quality of life.

"Community Matters" has two meanings. We'll discuss issues that concern the community, including local and current event topics, and encourage our participants and listeners to understand the important role volunteers and activists play. We all can make a difference on our block, in our neighborhood, in the towns and cities where we live, in our states, in our country and, finally, in today's world-wide "global village," on the lives of those around us, near and far.

The host of "Community Matters" is Bill Murray, founder of Los Angeles Community Policing (LACP.org), which began as his reaction to 9-11 and has since become the world's biggest grassroots effort devoted to community based policing. The web site features some 2500 archived pages of articles and information and has been continuously published since early 2002.

"I have long felt that America has an untapped inner resource, her people," says Bill, "whose contributions could be enormous if moderately supported. The universe responds when folks serve their communities, taking social service positions within them. All participation is important, and WHAT one does matters less than the fact that everyone can, and should, do SOMEthing."

"Community-based policing (policing with a small "p") means leaving something in better shape than you find it," Bill continues. "It's not just about public safety, although crime and it's prevention is certainly a prominent issue for LACP. But it also speaks to the many ways a community can become involved in watching over each other, participating in self governance, lending a hand in neighborhood projects and improving the quality of life."

We're hoping you'll join us regularly for lively discussions and topics that matter .. to you and to your community.
