Two New York City Police Officers Shot in the Bronx
Two plainclothes New York City police officers were shot Monday night while responding to a robbery in the Bronx, launching a manhunt for the suspects, officials said. The wounds didn't appear to be life-threatening but the officers were undergoing surgery at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, a police official said. One officer, 30 years old, suffered gunshot wounds to his arm and lower back, and was in critical but stable condition, officials said early Tuesday morning. The other, 38, was shot in the chest and left arm, and was in stable condition, officials said.

Police Union Pushes for Cop Killings to Be Included in Federal Hate Crimes Law
In the wake of the murder of two New York City police officers and a national debate about policing, the National Fraternal Order of Police is asking for the Congressional hate crimes statute to be expanded to include crimes against police officers. The union has more than 300,000 members.

Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) to Deploy More Than 3,000 TASER Smart Weapons to Front Line Officers
"The Los Angeles Police Department is committed to implementing safety measures to reduce the risk of injuries to both our officers and the members of our community, while improving trust within our communities," said Los Angeles Police Department Chief of Police Charlie Beck. "In addition to these new TASER deployments, we plan to issue a body-worn camera and a TASER device to every officer. It is our goal to make these important tools available to every front line officer over the next few years."

After a Week, Police Bust up Occupy LAPD Camp-in, Arrest 2 Women
For seven days, organizers with the regional Black Lives Matter movement camped peacefully outside Los Angeles police headquarters downtown, calling their protest "Occupy LAPD." They had a set of demands centered on Ezell Ford and wanted an audience with Police Chief Charlie Beck. But Monday morning, they were forced to pack up tents, blankets, pots and pans and get off the sidewalk.

Studio City Standoff With LAPD Leads to Exchange of Gunfire; 1 in Custody
One person was in custody after a kidnapping complaint led to an hourslong standoff that in turn prompted a shooting in a residential area of the Studio City, Los Angeles police said. Authorities were called to the 3900 block of Fredonia Drive (map) near the Cahuenga Pass shortly after 7:30 a.m. for a report of a person armed with a handgun who was trying to hold someone against his or her will, LAPD Officer Jack Richter said.

Long Beach Police Plead with Public for tips in Killing of Eliza Delacruz
Long Beach Police Chief Robert Luna on Monday made a plea for witnesses to come forward and help detectives solve a string of crimes that culminated in the death of a 3-week-old girl over the weekend. “Every homicide is important, but when you have a homicide that deals with a 3-week old baby, that takes it to a different level. (It's) very personal to us,” Luna said during a press conference Monday afternoon at police headquarters.

Woman's Body Found in Sun Valley Dump Site: LAPD
The nude and decomposing body of a woman in her 30s with a gunshot wound to the head was found at a Southern California dump site in the San Fernando Valley, sources tell NBC4. The discovery was made at Crown Disposal in Sun Valley, a 24-hour operation that processes garbage for recyclables. Detectives with the LAPD's Foothill Division began investigating Friday, when the gruesome discovery was made.

State lawmakers reacted to Gov. Jerry Brown's inaugural address with praise and trepidation Monday and, in a reflection of the political dynamic in California, that was just among the governor's fellow Democrats. Senate President Pro Tem Kevin De Leon (D-Los Angeles) said he was most excited by Brown's ambitious new proposal for further reductions to carbon emissions and goal to have 50% of the power used in California supplied by renewable energy sources by 2030.

California Attorney General Seeks Review after Recent Shootings by Police
California's attorney general stepped into the national debate over the recent slayings of unarmed civilians by police on Monday, calling for a review by her agency and promising to lead a public dialogue. Kamala Harris, the first minority to hold the state's highest law enforcement office, made the pledge as she was sworn in to a second and final term in the office she now holds. However, she is widely expected to be preparing for a run for governor or the U.S. Senate.
