With memorial approaching, Bay Area police rally around SJPD in wake of officer's death
When a contingent of Santa Cruz cops made the solemn journey to San Jose police headquarters last week to pay their respects in the wake of Officer Michael Johnson's shooting death, they paused at the growing memorials of flowers, candles and handwritten notes. All the sorrow and anguish from their own loss came flooding back.

LAPD body cameras to roll out at 3 precincts this summer
Hundreds of body cameras have been delivered to the Los Angeles Police Department and are expected to be put in use starting this summer, officials said Tuesday. The 860 Taser Axon body cameras were delivered to the department last week — earlier than expected, LAPD Chief Information Officer Maggie Goodrich told the Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners.

Andrew Getty may have died of natural causes or accident, official says
Andrew Getty, an heir to the Getty oil fortune, appears to have died of natural causes or an accident inside his Hollywood Hills estate, a coroner's official said. A time of death has not been determined, but a preliminary investigation suggests foul play was not involved, authorities said. A security hold -- a directive from detectives to the coroner's office not to publicly disclose details about a case -- has been placed on Getty's coroner's file.

Alleged kidnappers in Denise Huskins case threatened police in email
The mystery surrounding the alleged kidnapping and ransom of 29-year-old Denise Huskins intensified Tuesday. Vallejo police have called the March 23 incident an “orchestrated event” despite repeated claims by attorneys representing Huskins and her boyfriend that a kidnapping occurred.

Gunman chases, kills pedestrian in Westmont
A 47-year-old man was fatally shot about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in Westmont, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The man, who has not been identified, was walking in the 10100 block of South Budlong Avenue when two men pulled up in a white vehicle, Lt. John Corina said. A gunman chased and shot the man, Corina said. The gunman returned to the vehicle, and the car sped away.

L.A. County supervisors vote 5-0 to study raising the minimum wage
The movement to substantially increase the local minimum wage won a significant boost Tuesday when the county Board of Supervisors voted to follow the city of Los Angeles in studying the idea. Until now, the campaign to raise the wage to as much $15.25 an hour has largely focused within the city of 4 million residents, prompting concerns that businesses would move to communities where wages remain lower.

New $30 million grant announced to help end L.A. veteran homelessness
The Department of Veterans Affairs announced Tuesday a $30 million award for nonprofit agencies dealing with homeless veterans in the Los Angeles area.VA Secretary Robert A. McDonald said the grant program is effective “because it allows VA staff and local homeless service providers to work together to effectively address the unique challenges that make it difficult for some veterans and their families to remain stably housed."
