Fallen officers honored in D.C. for National Police Week
Thousands of police officers and families from around the country are in Washington to honor officers who died in the line of duty for National Police Week. Michelle Walker came from California to honor her husband. Trooper Mike Walker died on New Year's Eve back in 2005 when he was hit by a motorist on a California highway. He had been helping a stranded a motorist at the time.

LAPD Officers in Venice Fatal Shooting of Unarmed Transient Wore Privately Owned Body Cameras
The two Los Angeles police officers involved in last week's deadly encounter with an unarmed homeless man in Venice were both wearing privately owned body cameras at the time of the shooting, the LAPD said Tuesday. However, law enforcement sources said that although one of the cameras captured an initial encounter with the man, neither was on during the physical altercation that ended when one officer fatally shot Brendon Glenn.

Former LAPD captain alleges retaliation for fighting chief's mandate
A former Los Angeles police captain sued the city Wednesday, alleging he was forced into early retirement out of fear of retaliation for bucking a mandate from the chief to find that any officer who appeared before a Board of Rights disciplinary hearing should be fired. Joel Justice filed the lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court, seeking unspecified damages. An LAPD spokeswoman declined to comment on the suit.

A woman was shot at a San Pedro park after getting into a dispute with four males, police said. The woman was arguing with the group at Point Fermin Park about 4:20 p.m. Wednesday when one of them pulled out a gun and shot her, according to Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman Norma Eisenman.

Eyewitness News has learned that former Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Undersheriff Paul Tanaka and former Capt. Tom Carey have been indicted on obstruction of justice charges in connection to the scandal that rocked the department in 2013. Carey is expected to self-surrender Thursday morning. The U.S. Attorney's Office and the FBI have announced a news conference set for Thursday morning to detail the charges against them.

$20K Reward Offered For Information In Murder Of Former Compton High Football Star
A reward of $20,000 is being offered for information in the murder of a former star football player at Compton High School. Iyshun Dionte Tornero Bennett, 23, was with friends and family at a birthday barbecue party on April 16, 2013 in the 1700 block of West 151st Street in Compton when gunshots rang out. Bennett, along with a 15-year-old boy and a 39-year-old man, were hit, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Homeless veteran count rises 6% in L.A., posing hurdle for Garcetti
The population of homeless veterans in Los Angeles rose 6% in the last two years, according to figures released Wednesday, casting doubt on whether Mayor Eric Garcetti can meet his pledge to get every service member off the streets by year's end. “We're behind,” said Vince Kane, special assistant to U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert A. McDonald. “In L.A., we got off to a slow start.” In January, 18 months into his first term, Garcetti said he was more than halfway to his goal. But the new numbers show how difficult reaching it will be.
