LAPD identifies suspects in vicious lifeguard attack at Venice Pier
A lifeguard whose attack by three people in Venice was captured on video had simply asked his assailants to stop smoking on the pier, one of the lifeguard's supervisors said Friday. The full-time lifeguard, who has been with the department for 10 years, was jumped by two men and a woman as soon as he hopped off the ladder at his tower at the Venice Pier on Thursday evening, authorities said. The LAPD identified the two men as Harutiun Balyan, 30, and Ara Sarkisyan, 28. The woman was identified as Arusiak Gekchyan, 28. As Downtown Crime Rises, Both Cops and Residents Must Play a Vital Role
Crime is getting worse in Downtown Los Angeles. Exactly how bad things are is difficult to determine, in part because the Los Angeles Police Department last year changed the way it classifies certain crimes. That said, many Central City residents and stakeholders have noticed some worrisome conditions and trends over at least the past year. In LAPD crime statistics released last month, rates for violent crime shot up far higher in Downtown than in the city at large.
