LAPD to pay tribute to Martin Milner this morning
The Los Angeles Police Department will pay tribute today to actor Martin Milner, who portrayed Officer Pete Malloy on the “Adam- 12” television series that department officials say helped shape the public's perception of the LAPD. Milner died Sept. 7 at age 83. The LAPD will host a ceremony in Milner's honor at its downtown Los Angeles headquarters. Among those expected to attend are Milner's “Adam-12” co-star Kent McCord, Milner's son Andy and series producer Tom Williams. William Rinehart, a retired LAPD lieutenant who served as a technical adviser on the show, is also expected to attend, along with LAPD Chief Charlie Beck.

LAPD shooting: Officers feared ambush after seeing video, attorney says
For days, a 15-second video circulated on social media that alarmed Los Angeles police. Taken from a vehicle parked behind a black-and-white police cruiser in downtown L.A., the clip opened with a view of the patrol car then flashed down to show someone holding a revolver. The person showed the gun off for the camera, then cut back to the patrol car as an officer got out and walked away. Worried the video was a threat against its officers, LAPD officials briefed the rank-and-file about the recording, warning officers in roll call meetings to be on alert.

LAPD finds rape, attempted murder suspect in Victorville
A 31-year-old man wanted on suspicion of rape and attempted murder against his spouse was arrested last week after Los Angeles Police officers tracked the man to an address in Victorville, according to the L.A. County District Attorney's Office. Bryan Keith Mitchell was arrested Sept. 30 after authorities tracked Mitchell down to a home in the 15200 block of Las Piedras Drive, in a neighborhood not far from the Mojave Drive off-ramp of Interstate 15. Mitchell is being held at Men's Central Jail in Los Angeles on $2.1 million bail, jail records show.

Man Coming Home From Work Killed in Gang Crossfire
A man driving home from work was killed Tuesday when two suspected gang members exchanged gun fire during a car-to-car shooting, police said. The shooting occurred at 6 p.m. in the 7200 block of Eton Avenue in Canoga Park, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Two rival gang members racing down the street shot at each other from their vehicles, said Jack Richter, an LAPD spokesperson.

Toddler Is Critical but Stable After Mother, Brother Were Found Dead in Hollywood
When police and firefighters entered a Hollywood apartment Monday afternoon, they found a tragic scene: a mother and baby dead and a toddler wailing. Based on preliminary evidence, police said, the mother and 1-year-old boy had been dead about two days. The emergency workers went to the home in the 1600 block of North Fuller Avenue after receiving a call around 3 p.m. from a worried neighbor, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

CSUN Student Raped in Off-Campus Alleyway in Northridge: Police
A female CSUN student was raped in an off-campus alleyway after leaving the school's annual “Big Show” event over the weekend, according to police. The unidentified student left the concert and began walking to a friend's off-campus apartment around 8:45 p.m. Saturday when the assault occurred, the California State University, Northridge's Department of Police Services confirmed Tuesday.

New California Law Aims To Curb Racial Profiling By Police
California police will have to publicly report race and other demographic characteristics of any person stopped by officers under a new law intended to respond to high-profile deaths of unarmed black men and charges of racial profiling. The law, authored by state Assemblywoman Shirley Weber (D) and signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown (D) over the weekend, expands the state's formerly vague definition of racial profiling to include “identity profiling” based on gender, national origin or other characteristics protected against discrimination. The law requires law enforcement agencies to record the racial and identity characteristics of any person stopped or detained.

Are L.A.'s Elected Officials Capable of Leading the Fight Against Homelessness?
Are local elected leaders, including Mayor Eric Garcetti, senior members of the City Council and representatives on the County Board of Supervisors, prepared to do the hard work that is necessary to address homelessness? Or are they content to call press conferences, form committees, get media attention and then move on to the next topic, trusting that someone below them will handle the details? Anyone who has paid attention to the issue for the past half-decade or so would say it's the latter, though some would claim it's the former.

Officials want to improve public safety when a modified ordinance goes into effect next month giving officers the authority to go after spectators, not only suspected illegal street racers. Street racing task forces will be able impound the a spectators vehicle.

California Pension Reformers Split Initiative into Two
A ballot initiative introduced to try to restrain runaway public employee pension costs in California has been split apart and reintroduced as two new initiatives. Proponents plan only to collect signatures for one of them to get it on the 2016 ballot, but they're going to see what Attorney General Kamala Harris does when she titles and summarizes each ballot initiative.
