LAPD Counts On Local Muslim Community To Help Avert Terror Attacks
Local law enforcement officials are beefing up security even though there are no known specific threats in Southern California in the wake of last Friday's terror attacks in Paris. The Los Angeles Police Department is also counting on its outreach to the local Muslim community, which condemns the attacks, for early warnings of trouble.

The LAPD Hopes Digital Billboards Can Reach Distracted Drivers
The Los Angeles Police Department has partnered with Clear Channel Outdoor—owner of many of the city's mega billboards, including several of its digital ones—to transmit safety messages aimed at drivers. In a variation of fighting fire with fire, L.A. is essentially enlisting a digital communications company to reach digitally distracted motorists. "They're on the phone, they hit someone, and then they flee," is how Captain Ann E. Young of the LAPD put it.

No reliable way to track L.A. police on tax-free full salary injury leave, audit finds
The Los Angeles Police Department has no reliable way to track employees on extended injury leave, a program that pays officers 100% of salary, tax-free, for up to a year and costs the city tens of millions of dollars annually. The poor record-keeping will be reported to the Police Commission on Tuesday by Inspector General Alex Bustamante, a year after a Times investigation found a dramatic rise in the rate of injury claims filed by police and firefighters and eight months after a city audit that criticized a culture of filing "excessive" injury claims at the two departments.

Garcetti's overhaul of LAFD hiring hasn't met aim of diversifying
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti's overhaul of how the city hires new firefighters - launched 16 months ago amid allegations of nepotism and bias - has so far failed to meet his aim of diversifying the LAFD and may require further reforms to succeed, according to interviews with city officials and a Times analysis of government data.

Councilman criticizes LA's sidewalk repair program
A multimillion-dollar taxpayer-funded program to fix dozens of miles of sidewalks outside Los Angeles-owned buildings is being questioned by a City Council member, who said he's requested that some repairs in his district be halted. At a Monday hearing on sidewalk issues, Councilman David Ryu said he's concerned that sidewalks with “minimal or almost no damage” are being fixed in his district. As part of a sweeping repair program, nearly $15 million has been spent to fix sidewalks in front of at least 129 city facilities, according to a city report released this month.
