There are few places where Southern Californians feel more trapped than on a freeway in gridlocked traffic. One of the San Bernardino shooters and his longtime friend talked about taking advantage of this vulnerability by launching a terrorist attack on a clogged freeway using guns and pipe bombs, according to court records released last week.

A 51-year-old man is in critical condition after being shot multiple times while he was driving down the street, which caused him to crash in Crenshaw Monday morning. Andre Curtis's daughter was devastated after hearing about what happened to him. Family and friends said he doesn't have any known enemies and could not think of anyone who would want to hurt him.

Nun, 70, Dies a Week After Being Struck by Hit-and-Run Driver in Boyle Heights
Sister Raquel Diaz died Sunday, the Los Angeles Police Department announced Monday. Diaz was struck a week earlier, on Dec. 13, Winter Street and North Evergreen Avenue, next to Church of Assumption. Police said a small, white four-door compact car, possibly a Toyota or a Nissan, fled the scene.

Pasadena police fumbled their investigation of a black teen's shooting, report says
A new copy of an independent consultant's report on the 2012 fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager by Pasadena police officers includes more criticism of the way the city's Police Department handled the investigation into the killing. The latest version of the report on the shooting of Kendrec McDade includes several sections that the city previously tried to keep hidden from the public. Among them, for example, is a portion that says the two officers who shot McDade were never asked by department investigators whether they considered warning the 19-year-old that "they were about to use deadly force if he did not stop his perceived aggressive actions."

In Wake Of Attacks, U.S. Cities Step Up Terrorism Simulations
The recent attacks in Paris and San Bernardino have put pressure on local authorities to show they're ready for that kind of violence. Some jurisdictions, such as Los Angeles, are stepping up exercises and terrorism simulations. There's a hill near downtown L.A. it's kind of a mesa, overlooking Dodger Stadium. There's a big parking lot up there and right around 3 p.m. last Friday, the lot started filling up with police cars.

San Bernardino attack: Enrique Marquez to remain in custody, judge rules
Enrique Marquez Jr., the man accused of purchasing weapons used by the couple who carried out this month's deadly San Bernardino attack, will remain in custody as his criminal case proceeds, a U.S. magistrate judge ruled Monday. U.S. District Magistrate Judge David Bristow found that Marquez continues to pose a public risk and therefore could not be freed as he awaits trial.

We Need a National Plan to Stop Active Shooters
Once again, the world has witnessed a mass shooting. Predictably, people across the nation feel the need to do something when such things happen. Soon after the tragedy in San Bernardino, armchair experts were having policy debates on gun control, immigration and mental health, even before all the facts of the incident were fully known. But these debates divert our attention from immediate strategies that can and should be enacted now.
