Possibly Armed Carjacker Barricaded Inside South LA Home
A South Los Angeles neighborhood is on lockdown after a possibly armed person barricaded himself inside of a South Los Angeles home after trying to steal a car in front of it early Thursday morning, police said. The attack occurred at around 1 a.m. at the 1200 block of West 42nd Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department Southwest Division. Police said the person ran into the home and is hiding in a garage and may have fired at least one shot at someone, authorities said. There were other people in the house, police said.

Woman Stabbed While Waiting In Line At Taco Truck In East LA
A 29-year-old woman was stabbed while waiting in line at a taco truck in East Los Angeles, police said Thursday. The stabbing occurred around 10 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Whittier Boulevard and Clela Avenue, according to sheriff's deputies. Detectives said an unknown man grabbed the victim from behind by her neck and tried to drag her away. The suspect stabbed the woman several times with a folding knife.

Sophisticated Mail Thieves Target Homes In San Fernando Valley
Police Thursday warned the public of sophisticated mail thieves who are targeting homes in the San Fernando Valley. Surveillance video captured two crooks stealing a large package from a home located near Laurel Grove and Oxnard Street in North Hollywood. In the video, a green pick up truck is seen scouting homes for packages in the neighborhood. Minutes later, a large white van pulls down a driveway and two bold crooks jump out to carry out the heist.

Project Endure To Honor Fallen Officers
This November through December Los Angeles Police Officer Joe Cirrito will put on his full Class-A uniform and run from Los Angeles to Sacramento which is a 400 mile distance. Project Endure, which looks to raise money for those officers who have given the ultimate sacrifice, and the families they leave behind. The money will go to the LAPD Memorial Wall and to Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS).

Surveillance Video Captures Pharmacy Robbery; Police Seek Public's Help in Identifying Armed Gunman, Accomplices
Detectives are searching for two suspects caught on surveillance camera robbing a local pharmacy at gunpoint, plus the woman who acted as their lookout, police reported Wednesday. The robbery happened around 12:55 p.m. on Aug. 24 at a pharmacy located in the 1200 block of north Vermont Avenue. One suspect jumped over the counter, pointed a handgun at an employee and made her lay on the floor, while the second suspect helped steal medication and cash before fleeing in a maroon colored sedan, the LAPD's Northeast Robbery Unit reported in a news release.

Driver Arrested Following Stolen Vehicle Pursuit in Lincoln Heights
A 47-year-old man who was allegedly driving a stolen SUV was taken into custody Wednesday night after leading police on a short pursuit in Lincoln Heights. The pursuit began about 8:45 p.m. when Los Angeles police officers initiated a routine traffic stop, and the driver sped away after the SUV's plates came back as being stolen.

Gotcha! Did he kill walker-using victim, 84, in crosswalk three years ago?
A suspected hit-and-run killer was in custody Thursday in connection with a 2013 crash in Van Nuys that took the life of an 84-year-old man using a walker in a crosswalk. The victim was Asghar Abbassi, and he was fatally injured about 6 a.m. on Aug. 6, 2013, as he used a walker inside a crosswalk while crossing White Oak Avenue at Valerio Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Arraignment for mom; starved son's body found stashed in closet
An Echo Park woman whose 11-year-old son was found dead last month in a closet at her home is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday on murder and child abuse charges. Veronica Aguilar, 39, is scheduled to appear in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom in connection with the death of her son, Yonatan Daniel Aguilar.

Skid Row community leaders are fed up with the recent spice epidemic that sent dozens of homeless to the hospital last month. A town hall meeting on Wednesday that was billed as an education session about the drug got heated as people vented frustrations. “Blatant, this is blatant out here - drug sales, drug use, police roll past people, drinking, smoking, shooting up,” Eric Montgomery, a substance abuse counselor on Skid Row, said.

LA sees increase in people not competent to stand trial
The sharp increase in severely mentally ill people showing up as defendants in L.A.'s criminal courts is on track to accelerate this year. A draft report compiled by L.A. County's Health Agency, and made public Wednesday, determined L.A. County is on pace to see its number of defendants declared "incompetent to stand trial" due to mental illness grow by 1,000 cases in 2016 to about 4,500.

Former Court Clerk, 9 Others Plead Not Guilty in Bribery Scheme
A former Orange County Superior Court clerk and nine other men pleaded not guilty Wednesday to federal charges stemming from an alleged bribery scheme to fix criminal and traffic cases over a five-year period. The alleged ringleader -- Jose Lopez Jr., 36, of Anaheim -- was a former clerk in the state court system. Prosecutors allege he pocketed hundreds of thousands of dollars to resolve more than 1,000 cases until the spring of last year, when the alleged racketeering scheme was uncovered. The 10 defendants were ordered back to court Oct. 21 for a status hearing.

Chicago Hits Grim Milestone With 500 Homicides in 2016
The City of Chicago hit a deadly milestone over the Labor Day weekend — the 500th homicide of the year. And with that tragic tally, the Windy City has now logged more homicides than New York City and Los Angeles combined — and is on pace to reach a homicide level not seen since the 1990s, the Chicago Tribune reported Tuesday. Don't blame the cops, Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said outside police headquarters Tuesday.

The NFL eight months ago approved the St. Louis Rams' relocation to Los Angeles based on the team's plan for a major stadium development in Inglewood, selected over a more suburban proposal. Now with the Rams eagerly eyeing 2019 for their move-in date, former head of Homeland Security Tom Ridge blasted the Federal Aviation Administration for failing to aggressively oversee the planned stadium, and called for the venue to move because terrorists could attack it.

LA votes to increase fees on developers for more parks
The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously on Wednesday to increase parks fees for the first time in 31 years. That means developers will have to pay more fees that are then used to develop parks. The increased fees will generate millions of dollars and help to encourage the development of parks and open spaces in parts of L.A. without parks, according to a release from Councilman Jose Huizar's office.

LA City Council tightens record-keeping rules after fallout over destroyed documents
Following revelations that some Los Angeles City Hall politicians destroy city documents when retiring from public office, lawmakers have moved to tighten record-keeping rules.The Los Angeles City Council voted Wednesday to create a new records retention schedule for all council members. Under the rules, papers such as budget documents must be archived with the city for up to 8 years. Other documents, including some policy papers must be permanently stored.
