LAFD's Auxiliary Communications Service
LA's HAMs aim to keep us informed during an emergency

by Don Farkas

Thanks to my sample Casiano Bel Air Community Emergency Plan Summary appearing on the LACP website, I was contacted by Monte Gordon of the Auxiliary Communications Service (ACS).

The LA Fire Department's ACS program is an important volunteer organization, of which I had previously been unaware, that may be used to support emergency communications in our communities in the event telephone service ever becomes interrupted as a result of a disaster.

The members of the ACS are licensed radio amateur operators (Ham Radio Operators) who help protect the City of Los Angeles by working as an integral part of the Los Angeles Fire Dept.'s communications infrastructure. ACS has a website that can be viewed at www.lafd.org/acs.htm

Mr. Gordon wrote the following, as an introduction to the Auxiliary Communications Service:

Los Angeles Fire Dept.
Auxiliary Communications Service [ACS]

ACS is an organization of licensed radio amateurs (Ham Radio Operators) who have been trained by the Los Angeles Fire Department to support communications between LAFD division and battalion houses as well as LA's Emergency Operations Center.

I am soliciting fellow Beverly Glen Park Hams [and persons interested in becoming licenced] as well as Glenridge, Casiano Bel-Air and other hillside community residents to consider applying for membership in ACS.

Our work is educational and of particular interest to residents of our communities because of potential natural disasters in our limited access areas as well as preparation for possible events of terrorism.

Because of interaction with LAFD personnel at fire stations and sponsored activities, we are uniformed and display unique photo identification.

In addition, we interface with CERT, the Community Emergency Response Team which functions within the LAFD umbrella.

You are invited to view our website, www.lafd.org/acs.htm, and monitor our weekly net.

In any event, please make yourself known as an amateur radio operator or CERT member to me at msgordon76@aol.com or by my business phone, 310/306-7889.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Please get involved with either of these two important LA Fire Department volunteer programs. Your participation could mean all the difference in the event of an emergency:

ACS - Auxiliary Communications Service

CERT - Community Emergency Response Team
