The LAPD Reserve Officer Program
Many Opportunities to Serve the Community

EDITOR'S NOTE: Please also see the May 2004 LACP article:

The LAPD Reserve Officer Program; Community Policing At Its Finest

There are four levels or types of LAPD Reserve Officers, and multiple community policing opportunities to serve the City of Los Angeles within them.

Officer Reserve Officers are generally not content to play a passive role in life. Instead, they continue to devote more and more of their time and talents to the City of Los Angeles. They "get involved" for the betterment of their community, and by doing so live up to the Reserve Corps’ motto, "To be a Reserve is to be Twice a Citizen."

There are four types of Reserve Officers, three of which are required to work a minimum of 32 hours every two deployment periods to remain active. The civilian Specialists have no shift requirement.

Each requires a different level of training, and performs different duties:

A. Specialist Reserve Officer - a volunteer (not a sworn officer) with special talents that benefit the Department (i.e. -physician, financial planner, etc.).
do not wear uniforms or carry weapons
No training requirement
Current Department strength - 265

B. Level III Reserve Officer - a sworn police officer who may engage in limited support duties (front desk, administrative and non-enforcement positions).
  generally wear uniforms, are unarmed
204 hours of formal academy training (approximately 3.5 months nights/weekends) [204 hours total]
Current Department strength - 189

C. Level II Reserve Officer - a sworn police officer who may engage in general law enforcement duties (radio calls, arrests, etc.) provided they are supervised by a full-time or Level I Reserve Officer.
  generally wear uniforms, are armed
Requires another 288 hours of academy training (approximately 4.5 months nights/weekends) [492 hours total]
Current Department strength - 12
First LAPD Level II academy class will graduate in May 2004.

D. Level I Reserve Officer - a sworn police officer who may engage in general law enforcement duties (radio calls, arrests, etc.) without close supervision when a requisite amount of field experience is gained.
  Generally wear uniforms, are armed
Requires another 340 hours of academy training (approximately 5 months nights/weekends) [832 hours total]
Current Department strength - 208

This is community policing and volunteering at its finest.
