"Merry Christmas" to those who serve
Sending gifts to the Military

OPINION

by Pauline Spear

The holidays are upon us. This year, unlike any other in decades past, our citizens have received a blatant slap in the face, disrespectful greed that has crippled our economy. So many have made fortunes off the sweat and trust of the American people. It will be a bleak holiday season financially for so many.

However, at this same time there are many who are sacrificing far more than money for us. Our military; they are sons, daughters, fathers, brothers, sisters and friends who are risking their lives so that we can have the opportunity to be able to suffer through and gripe about these tight economic times.

While everyone is running out to black Friday sales, I hope you will remember those that keep us safe and keep freedom alive. I have no doubt they would appreciate your generosity. We all love gifts. I know I do.

What was once a sacred Christian holiday celebrating the birth of Christ, is now just about making money. All knowing the goods these corporations pedal will eventually be garbage for landfills. Global warming is not something our military can fix.

This year, my heart is with the soldiers who are away from their families, friends and loved ones. While they are protecting our freedoms, we here at home should not forget the sacrifices they are making so we can indulge in the luxury of our freedoms.

I intend on sending care packages in the names of my children to soldiers. I hope you will join me in providing to those who protect us and keep us safe during this holiday season.

Something as simple as your child drawing pictures, writing a soldier a letter (there are many who do not have family) or sending small comforts from home (please see the lists on the links provided) can do wonders for morale.

I have found a few great websites that detail items that soldiers could really use, basic items that we have long since taken for granted. I have selected a few of the many organizations that offer assistance. The ones I have selected are not for profit organizations.

I hope those of you who read this will open your hearts, minds and possibly your wallets for this worthy cause.

Happy Holidays and may God Bless you with bounty, joy, peace, prosperity and an inspirational New Year! Remember freedom is not free.
