Crime alerts for Sylmar, Harvard Heights and seven other L.A. neighborhoods
Crime reports are up significantly for the latest week in nine L.A. neighborhoods, according to an analysis of Los Angeles Police Department data by the Los Angeles Times' Crime L.A. database. Eight neighborhoods reported a significant increase in violent crime. Sylmar recorded nine reports compared with a weekly average of 2.4 over the last three months. Harvard Heights was the lone neighborhood with a property-crime alert. It recorded 11 property crimes compared with its weekly average of 5.6 over the last three months.

Police make presence felt at Dodger Stadium
Police on foot, bikes and horses descended on Chavez Ravine on Thursday night as Dodgers fans got their first taste of the ballpark's new "zero-tolerance" crackdown on rowdy behavior, prompted by the beating of a San Francisco Giants fan on opening day. Many Dodger faithful said they were thankful for the beefed-up police presence, but disheartened it was necessary.

Beck releases new description of Dodger Stadium attackers
As Los Angeles police and the Dodgers ramped up security efforts in the wake of the beating of a Giants fan on opening day, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck provided a fuller description and new police sketches of the two men suspected in the beating. Beck said he hoped a fuller description of the suspects would help detectives track down the men who beat Bryan Stow in the Dodger Stadium parking lot. Stow has been in a medically induced coma since the incident two weeks ago.

San Fernando Valley search for 2 who stole car, fired at cop
Police searched the San Fernando Valley on Thursday morning for a man suspected of stealing a car, crashing it and firing shots at an officer while fleeing. A second suspect has been taken into custody. Authorities said police were following a stolen car when it crashed at 12:51 a.m. near Sunny Brae Avenue Elementary in Winnetka. Officers were pursuing the suspects when one suspect fired at an officer. The officer was not injured.

Suspect set fire inside prominent Hollywood synagogue, LAPD says
Authorities are investigating a small fire and burglary that occurred overnight at a prominent Hollywood synagogue. Police say a man believed to be in his late 20s broke into the temple, collected several items, placed them on a desk and set them on fire using a candle. Sources familiar with the investigation told The Times the probe is ongoing and that detectives don't believe it was a hate crime.

LAPD using intel networks in fight against terror

Police are using a combination of aggressive spy operations and community outreach to counter what Deputy Police Chief Michael P. Downing called the growing threat of Mumbai-style terrorist attacks - car bombings and small-arms-equipped suicide teams. "The biggest fear I have is just what I don't know," Chief Downing, commanding officer of the counter-terrorism and special operations bureau, said in an interview, in which he warned that the terrorism threat in the area remains very real.

Taggers attacking outdoor areas near MOCA museum's 'Art in the Streets' exhibit in Little Tokyo, LAPD says
Los Angeles police expressed concern Thursday about a jump in vandalism and graffiti just before the opening of the "Art in the Streets" exhibit at the Geffen Contemporary museum in Little Tokyo. Over the last two days, dozens of tags, including monikers and larger so-called bombs have blighted several commercial buildings behind 1st Street as well dumpsters and light poles within a stone's throw of the museum entrance.

Crackdown focuses on speeding on Valley roads
Police issued 67 speeding tickets Thursday morning as officers used laser radar guns to zero in on lead-footed drivers in Sherman Oaks. One driver clocked 71 mph in the 40 mph zone during the special enforcement operation along a mile-long stretch of Riverside Drive between Fulton and Hazeltine avenues and on Woodman Avenue near Notre Dame High School, police said.

LAPD agrees to avoid ticketing tardy students on their way to school
The Los Angeles Police Department has agreed to avoid ticketing tardy students for being truant if they are on their way to school, advocates for students announced Thursday. The tickets, which can result in hundreds of dollars in fines and lost school time, are exactly the wrong approach for achieving better attendance, according to those who are involved. Truancy and tardiness remain serious problems in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

L.A. First Deputy Mayor Austin Beutner to explore run for the top job
Ending months of speculation, First Deputy Mayor Austin Beutner will file papers Thursday to explore a campaign to replace Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who finishes his second and final term in June 2013, sources said. By submitting papers to the City Ethics Commission that will allow him to begin raising money, Beutner would join what is likely to be a crowded and heavy-hitting field of potential candidates.
