Accused drunken driver injures 11 bicyclists near L.A
A motorist accused of driving drunk plowed her car into a group of bicyclists early on Thursday, injuring 11 of them, at least one critically, Los Angeles police said. The driver, identified as Christina Dahab, 27, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to Los Angeles Police Department officer Lyle Knight. Knight said a group of 15 to 20 cyclists were riding together shortly before 2 a.m. local time through Culver City, near Los Angeles, when Dahab's car ran into them.

Van Nuys man charged with child molestation, posing as a police officer
A Van Nuys man who allegedly posed as a police officer and told underage girls to place tracking devices in their bras to help him with an investigation was charged Thursday with child molestation and more than a dozen other counts. Joseph Reyes Rogero, 24, was charged with 18 felony counts that also included lewd acts on a child, kidnapping and impersonating a public officer, the Los Angeles County district attorney's office said.

Pacoima shooter who killed 1, wounded 3, eludes police

Whoever shot and killed a man and wounded three others in an gang-related attack outside a Pacoima home remained at large. The shooting in the 13000 block of Pinney Street, near Lopez Canyon Road, occurred about 10:25 p.m. Wednesday, said Los Angeles police Sgt. Chuck Coleman of the Foothill Station. Angel Lopez, 20, of Los Angeles died at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center. The other three victims were expected to recover from leg wounds.

Former NYPD/LAPD Chief warns crime could worsen nationwide
A combination of tight budgets at municipal and state government levels plus "poorly socialized youth" (LBJ's Great Grandkids) could result in the reversal of the downtrend in crime across the country over the last 20 years, says William Bratton, who is the only person to have ever led the two largest police forces in the U.S., NYPD and LAPD. He is currently vice chair of the Homeland Security Advisory Council, and chairman of Kroll, a leading risk-consulting firm.

Supreme Court backs Miranda warning when questioning juveniles

The Supreme Court expanded the rights of juveniles Thursday, deciding by a 5-4 vote that police officers who remove a student from a class to question him about a crime usually must warn him of his right to remain silent. "It is beyond dispute that children will often feel bound to submit to police questioning when an adult in the same circumstance would feel free to leave," wrote Justice Sonia Sotomayor for the court.

The U.S. Supreme Court decision forcing California to reduce its overcrowded prison population by more than 30,000 inmates has the state's voters worried.
And, while more than half of voters support Gov. Jerry Brown's plan to transfer convicts to local and county jails, they overwhelmingly oppose paying for the shift with increased taxes, a new survey found.

Undocumented students could get financial aid under revived California DREAM Act
The federal DREAM Act failed in December, but similar legislation is gaining momentum in states, including California. Under a bill working its way through the state Legislature, some undocumented college students could get access to Cal Grants, institutional aid and fee waivers at publicly funded colleges.

City Councilman Paul Krekorian advocates neighborhood panel reforms
Paul Krekorian Capping an 18-month study, City Councilman Paul Krekorian on Wednesday proposed a series of reforms to update the city's management of neighborhood councils. "This was an unprecedented study to try to deal with the most common complaints we have heard about," Krekorian said, as he introduced four motions designed to deal with the problems.

L.A. council votes to ask Congress to give fans a shot to buy Dodgers
The troubled Los Angeles Dodgers aren't for sale - yet - but the City Council hopes the average Angeleno would have a shot at buying a piece of the legendary franchise if it ever does come onto the market. The council voted Wednesday to ask Congress for legislation allowing the public to be included in the bidding process to own the team.

Mayor, Supervisors: Stay Off Roads During 405 Closure
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, county supervisors and other transportation officials warned Angelenos this week to stay off the roads when a massive construction project is scheduled to close the San Diego (405) Freeway to traffic in mid-July. "Plan ahead, avoid the area, or stay home that weekend," the mayor said. "Eliminate all unnecessary auto trips and do your part to help reduce congestion on the region's freeway network and major arterials."
