Actors Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Pena witness real drama with LAPD
Actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena were on a ride-along with officers in South Los Angeles as part of research for an upcoming police drama when they found themselves face to face with a real drama. The actors, with their police escort, Sgt. Tammy Bowen, witnessed the aftermath of what Los Angeles police characterized as a gang shooting reported late Wednesday at Van Ness Park in the 5700 block of South 2nd Avenue.

Chosen Few motorcycle gang is targeted in crackdown
The criminal activity of a notorious and violent motorcycle gang has been "significantly curtailed" thanks to a year-long multi-agency initiative, authorities said Thursday. Several leaders and members of the so-called Chosen Few Motorcycle Club, which authorities describe as a criminal gang, have been arrested and incarcerated, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Postal authorities on high alert after mailbox thefts
A recent spate of mailbox thefts has put postal authorities on high alert and raised concern that customers may be vulnerable to identity theft. But authorities said it was unclear whether the brazen heists were part of a growing trend. "The economy the way it is, there is an increase in crime all around," said U.S. Postal Inspector Renee Focht of the Postal Service's Los Angeles division, which has jurisdiction over Southern California. "We can't speculate why the mailboxes are being targeted."

Pensions

Opinion: Ballot box proposals to gut pensions will not prevent pink slips
Claims that pensions are bankrupting state government because of poorly run and expensive pension plans, and that we are headed for Armageddon, are just plain wrong. Seizing on the financial collapse of 2008, and at times just flat out inventing statistics when the real numbers do not produce headline-grabbing dire results, has become stock in trade for those committed to destroying public pensions. The state of California is in fact paying a lower percentage of payrolls for pensions today than it did in 1980.

Group plans sticker campaign to tie pensions to the economy
Looking to highlight the impact public employee pensions have on the state's economy, an association of the 31,000 retired state employees is turning to thousands of little blue stickers. The California State Employees Association Retirees plans to distribute 100,000 stickers that say "Paid By State Retiree" for its members to affix to checks, bills and other paper forms of payment to state merchants.

405 Closure

Carmageddon will affect traffic Downtown, Pasadena and beyond
A top transportation official said Thursday that "Carmageddon," this weekend's closure of the 405 Freeway through the Sepulveda Pass, is likely to jam traffic far and wide. Doug Failing, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's executive director of highway projects, said drivers should expect traffic issues as far away as the 210 Freeway in the San Gabriel Valley.

If work goes smoothly, 405 Freeway could reopen early
If demolition work on the Mulholland Drive bridge goes smoothly this weekend, the 10-mile section of the 405 Freeway might reopen early, though officials said Thursday they did not know how much sooner traffic could be moving again on one of the nation's busiest interstates. All ramps, freeway connectors and lanes on the 405 are set to be back in operation by 6 a.m. Monday. Officials said the freeway could reopen earlier if contractor Kiewit Infrastructure West Co. can finish and clean up the pavement ahead of schedule.

Carmageddon: LAPD says no to parties, bike rides on 405
There's no way to plan for Carmageddon, the three-day shut down of one of the most vital stretches of freeway in Los Angeles, without having to field some unusual requests or address oddball contingencies. Take the Facebook group that has proposed holding a block party on a Santa Monica Boulevard ramp to the 405, complete with beer and guitars. There's also the enterprising marketers who asked CalTrans for permission to spray paint a bridge abutment with graffiti reading "The Apes Will Rise" to promote the new "Planet of the Apes" movie.

Immigration

Senate sends 'Dream Act' bill on illegal immigrants to Brown
Legislation that would extend more scholarship opportunities to college students who are undocumented immigrants was approved by the state Senate today. Assembly Bill 130, one of two "Dream Act" bills under consideration in the Legislature this year, would allow undocumented immigrants who currently qualify for in-state tuition to apply for scholarships funded with private donations. The bill, by Assemblyman Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, was approved by the Senate on a 26-11 vote.

Parole

Baca backs away from plan to have deputies supervise parolees
Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca has backed down in his bid for the department to take on sole supervision of state parolees, an official confirmed Thursday evening, opting instead for a hybrid plan that would leave his deputies out of rehabilitation. Baca's initial proposal was an unprecedented attempt to handle the thousands of parolees being passed from the state to the local level instead of the county's probation officers, who already do that sort of work.
