Two new suspects held in beating of Giants fan Bryan Stow
Los Angeles police Thursday arrested two men in connection with the brutal beating of a San Francisco Giants fan at Dodger Stadium and have concluded that the suspect they took into custody in May was not involved in the attack, law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation said. Police officials refused to publicly release details about the dramatic turn of events in the case, which has attracted international attention and placed city and Dodger officials under intense pressure to reassure fans it is safe to attend games at the storied venue in Chavez Ravine.

Fatal shootings of police officers are on the rise

Police officer deaths, including those fatally shot in the line of duty, are on pace to rise for the second straight year, despite a sustained decline in violent crime across the country. Overall officer deaths are up 14% so far in 2011, while deadly shootings have increased by 33%, according to a midyear report by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, which tracks law enforcement fatalities. If fatal shootings continue at the current rate, gunfire-related deaths would represent the primary cause of officer fatalities this year, according to the report.

Hollenbeck honors slain officers with new memorial

The names Jerry Maddox and Steven Gajda may not ring a bell for most people in Boyle Heights, but to officers at the LAPD's Rudy de Leon Hollenbeck Community Police Station, the names are very significant. On July 14, a new memorial was unveiled in the station's lobby to honor the two officers killed in the line of duty. Newspaper clippings and other memorabilia chronicling the deaths and funerals of officers Maddox and Gajda hang framed on the office walls of the eastside station, out of the public eye. The new memorial—which prominently displays the words “To Protect and To Serve,” along with each of the officer's photo, badge, and medals—ensures the story of their sacrifice remains in public view.
