Charges expected in grandson killing
Murder charges are expected to be filed Tuesday against two men arrested for the killing of a 24-year-old who was shot to death while trying to help his grandfather. Rene Ubaldo Ramirez, 29, and Evin Adonis Ortiz, 22, were arrested last week and booked on suspicion of murder by LAPD North Hollywood Division detectives. Investigators said they also found the getaway car and were searching for a third man involved in the killing. Records show Ramirez is a twice-deported illegal alien who spent 6-years in state prison for robbery, authorities said, and Ortiz is also in the U.S. illegally. No-bail immigration holds were placed on both men.

Citizens' mostly unhappy voices to be heard on L.A. plan to stop impounding cars of unlicensed drivers
They've been rear-ended by immigration politics. They've been sideswiped by legal semantics. No wonder law-abiding citizens who oppose the plan to stop impounding unlicensed drivers' cars have developed a case of road rage. If officials haven't noticed the anger yet, they may get an earful of it tonight when the Los Angeles Police Commission holds a public meeting in the San Fernando Valley.

The 37-year-old currently works as a senior lead officer in the Harbor Division.

Health Care

Dirty freeway air puts Southern California health at risk, say activists
A growing body of science has confirmed common-sense instinct that dirty freeway air is seriously bad for health, and that research is now spurring Los Angeles activists and regulators to consider new ways of addressing pollution. Though air quality in Southern California has improved dramatically since the 1970s, more and more evidence shows that pollutants remain concentrated close to traffic corridors, and that these toxins cause a broad variety of health problems.

Immigration

Immigration law's wrinkle keeps man in Davis, may help others
Davis waiter Rogelio Servin entered deportation proceedings in San Francisco earlier this month and came home a legal resident, thanks to a little-used wrinkle in immigration law. Servin, 32, was a boy when he came here from Mexico with his family without documentation. Servin's Sacramento legal team of Daniel Karalash and Janell Clayton argued that Servin, who had a felony conviction stemming from a domestic dispute, had turned his life around and deserved to stay in the country to support his wife and children, all U.S. citizens.

City Government

Website provides information on lawn options for L.A. City Hall
The Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks has created a website where the public can get information on plans to restore the City Hall lawn destroyed by the Occupy L.A. encampment. The department presented three options for the park at a Downtown Neighborhood Council meeting last week and received a flood of feedback on what the public space should look like. The Occupy L.A. protesters were evicted Nov. 30, seven weeks after the movement took over the space.
