Shotgun-wielding gang member charged with hate crime, LAPD says
A reputed Latino gang member who allegedly pointed a shotgun at three African Americans and yelled racial epithets was charged with a hate crime and assault with a deadly weapon, police said Wednesday night. The crime allegedly occurred on Drew Street and Estara Avenue in Glassell Park, in an area where the ruthless Avenues street gang has operated for years.

Officials offer $75,000 reward to help find who killed 2 college students
An aspiring lawyer, 22-year-old Clifton Hibbert Jr. was only weeks from graduating college when he and a friend were murdered in South L.A. Three years later, authorities are reinstating a reward to help find those responsible. City Councilwoman Jan Perry and the LAPD announced Wednesday that the city would offer $75,000 for information leading to an arrest in the murders of Clifton Hibbert Jr. and his friend Kenneth Patterson.

Reward grows to $20,000 for information on 2 beheaded dogs
City Council members Jan Perry and Paul Koretz on Wednesday announced $20,000 in reward money for information leading to the apprehension and prosecution of whoever dumped two dogs' heads in a large trash bin in South Los Angeles last week. A man looking for recyclables behind a CVS store at the intersection of W. Slauson and S. Vermont avenues found the severed heads of a chocolate Labrador Retriever mix and a tan German Shepherd on the night of March 20.

Man held in threatening girlfriend with shotgun
A Hollywood man accused of sticking a shotgun in his girlfriend's face and fleeing with their three children was arrested Wednesday, Los Angeles police said. He was arrested near 87th Street and Western Avenue by detectives with the LAPD's Hollywood Division. LAPD officers responded to a domestic call about 12:30 p.m.Tuesday in the 6100 block of Eleanor Avenue and recovered the shotgun from the apartment.

Sun Valley man fatally shot by LAPD is ID'd
A man fatally shot by Los Angeles police at his Sun Valley home when he allegedly pointed a gun at an officer on Saturday evening was identified Wednesday. Benjamin Bittner, 35, was fatally shot about 7 p.m. at an address in the 7400 block of Craner Avenue, according to a coroner's spokesman and police, who were sent to the address on the a report of a family disturbance involving a gun.

LAPD officer from Azusa to face off for state boxing title in Battle of the Badges
It might not be the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, but Azusa Avenue has been a dedicated training ground for the next big boxer of the day. Juan Bustamante, an LAPD officer in the Foothill Division, has spent the past couple months running the streets of Azusa and fighting in the same gym where he got his start, in order to be ready for the United Combat Association's state title fight in a Battle of the Badges.

Re-arrest rates dip for county parolees
The number of parolees arrested for new crimes in Los Angeles County has dropped since Gov. Jerry Brown's realignment plan took effect six months ago, drawing cautious optimism from some state and local officials. The county Probation Department is currently supervising about 6,200 parolees - officially known as post-release supervised persons or PSPs - who were released from state prisons after Oct. 1.

California lawmakers to don hoodies to protest Trayvon Martin case
California lawmakers plan to wear hoodies Thursday to protest the killing of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed Florida teenager who was shot to death last month by a neighborhood watch volunteer. Members of the Black, Latino and Asian Pacific Islander caucuses will don hooded jackets and hold a morning news conference in the Capitol to show solidarity with Martin's family, who have said their son was a victim of racial profiling.

L.A. can't explain $7 million in fuel bills
Despite a concerted effort at Los Angeles City Hall to track the use of taxpayer-purchased fuel, more than $7 million in gasoline and other fuel has gone missing in recent years, according to an audit to be released Thursday. At dozens of city fueling sites, millions of gallons of fuel was pumped without any record of where it went, the audit showed. City Controller Wendy Greuel, whose office conducted the investigations, said some of the unaccounted-for gasoline may have been used for personal vehicles.
