Police union blasts LAPD for illegally releasing personnel information
Condemning the leak of confidential information to the news media as unlawful and indecent, the Los Angeles Police Protective League on Thursday demanded an immediate investigation to determine who divulged the name of a Los Angeles police officer accused of racial profiling. The call for the investigation came in a strongly-worded letter from LAPPL President Tyler Izen to Los Angeles Police Department Inspector General Alexander A. Bustamante.

Man charged with stealing nearly $500,000 in movie posters
A Reseda man was arraigned Thursday on theft-related charges for allegedly stealing nearly $500,000 worth of movie posters for scores of films, including current box-office blockbuster "The Hunger Games." Christian Eric Stevens, 36, appeared in a Van Nuys courtroom to answer charges that he stole 3,000 movie posters from bus shelters. He pleaded not guilty to one count each of grand theft of personal property and receiving stolen property.

MVCPC to celebrate officers of the quarter
The Mid-Valley Community Police Council will celebrate and recognize the "Officers of the Quarter" on Tuesday, April 3 at 7:30 a.m. The celebration will be held at Valley Presbyterian Hospital, Jean & David Fleming Building, 15107 Vanowen Street, Van Nuys, CA 91405. LAPD Command Staff and Supervisors have nominated and voted for those who have gone above and beyond the call of duty.

Hollenbeck captain named Woman of the Year
Hollenbeck police Captain Anita I. Ortega was recognized Monday by Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez (D-Los Angeles) as the 46th Assembly District's Woman of the Year. Homage was paid to the Los Angeles Police Department officer during a ceremony at the State Capital, a practice started 25 years ago to highlight Women's History Month, according to Pérez's office.

FBI: US losing hacker war
The Federal Bureau of Investigation says it is losing the war against hackers. Shawn Henry, an FBI executive assistant director who is preparing to leave the organization after working for more than two decades with the bureau, says that the U.S. is not keeping up with hackers. Thousands of individuals and groups around the world are taking aim at businesses and government websites, including those in the U.S., and Henry says "we're not winning."

Villaraigosa calls for raising retirement age on new employees
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Thursday threatened to put a measure on the ballot raising the retirement age for new city employees if the City Council refuses to enact such a proposal. With the city facing a $220-million budget shortfall, Villaraigosa told an audience at the City Administrative Officer Investors Conference that he would seek to lay off "a large number" of employees in the proposed budget he unveils April 20.

Villaraigosa and City Council 'asleep at the switch,' Greuel says
Los Angeles City Controller Wendy Greuel on Thursday accused Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the City Council of being "asleep at the switch" when it comes to monitoring fuel usage by city employees. Greuel made the remark at a news conference where she released an audit showing that more than $7 million in gasoline and other fuel has gone missing from the city in recent years.

Sensitive personal information missing on 800,000 California residents
In a puzzling breach of security, computer storage devices containing identification information of 800,000 Californians using the state's child support services have disappeared. The Department of Child Support Services reported Thursday the data devices were lost March 12 en route to California from the Colorado facilities of IBM, one of the contractors in charge of the storage devices.
