Crime alerts for Jefferson Park and 13 other L.A. neighborhoods Crime reports are up significantly for the latest week in 14 L.A. neighborhoods, according to an analysis of Los Angeles Police Department data by the Los Angeles Times' Crime L.A. database. Nine neighborhoods reported a significant increase in violent crime. Jefferson Park was the most unusual, recording eight reports compared with a weekly average of 2.4 over the last three months. Carthay topped the list of five neighborhoods with property crime alerts.

1-year-old dies after he and his father are shot in Watts
A 1-year-old boy died late Monday after he and his father were shot in Watts by an attacker on a bike, police said. The boy was taken to a hospital, where emergency personnel performed surgery to try and save him. He died around 11 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Police on Monday night were investigating whether a gang rivalry led to the shooting that also left the child's father wounded. He was in stable condition, the LAPD said.

Police discover 2 men shot to death in Panorama City apartment
Los Angeles detectives were looking for suspects in the shooting deaths of two men whose bodies were found in a Panorama City apartment, a police spokesman said. A passerby peered through an open door at an apartment in the 7900 block of Brimfield Avenue at 11 p.m. Saturday and saw the bodies, said Los Angeles police spokesman Bruce Borihanh. The men, ages 35 and 26, had suffered gunshot wounds and paramedics pronounced them dead at the scene, Borihanh said.

Burglary suspect cuts off GPS tracker, walks away from Van Nuys courthouse
A registered sex offender who was arrested on suspicion of six local burglaries last year, cut off his GPS ankle tracker and walked away from a preliminary hearing, police said Monday. Perry Pemberton, 29, was wearing his GPS ankle tracker at a hearing at Van Nuys Superior Court for burglary charges on May 25. He had been wearing the monitor after convictions for violent felonies in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara.

Armed man surrenders to SWAT team after barricading himself in Winnetka home for 10 hours
A police SWAT team on Monday surrounded a Winnetka home where an armed man suspected of domestic violence held off police nearly 10 hours before surrendering. Officers were sent to the 6700 block of Winnetka Avenue, just east of Los Angeles Pierce College, shortly before 5 a.m. when a woman reported that someone was trying to break into her residence, said Officer Bruce Borihanh of the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations office.

Robbery-homicide to investigate drive-by shooting of Northeast officer
The LAPD's Robbery-Homicide Division is investigating the drive-by shooting of a Northeast Division officer early Sunday morning. Several bullets hit the car, but the officer was unharmed. A stretch of the freeway near Los Feliz Boulevard was shut down for about an hour during the investigation. According to Officer Cleon Joseph of LAPD's Media Relations Office, there are currently no leads in the case.

L.A. could resume controversial cleanup sweeps in skid row
Armed with a new county report citing the health dangers of feces, urine and hypodermic needles recently found on Los Angeles' skid row, city officials could resume controversial cleanup sweeps of the downtown area's streets and sidewalks. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health inspected a nine-block area and discovered human waste, injection needles, condoms and a rat infestation in violation of county and state health codes.

Killer, due compassionate release, dies in prison
A convicted murderer who was granted "compassionate release" by state courts so he could spend his final days with his family, died in prison last week as he was about to receive an order setting him free, his lawyer said. Carl Wade, 66, was serving a sentence of 32 years to life for the fatal shooting of a fellow woodcutter, John Karns, in Lake County in June 1986.

FBI agent from Los Angeles to head San Diego office
An FBI agent from the Los Angeles office has been named as special agent in charge of the San Diego Division, with responsibility for San Diego and Imperial counties, the FBI announced Monday. Daphne Hearn, who joined the FBI in 1991, will succeed Keith Slotter, who is retiring after 25 years with the FBI. She was selected by FBI Director Robert Mueller III.

Californians to test new primary system
Californians heading to the polls Tuesday will decide whether to tweak term limits for state lawmakers and raise cigarette taxes to fund cancer research - even as they try out a revamped primary system designed to reduce partisan gridlock here and in Washington. Under new primary rules, the top two finishers in races for state and federal offices will face off in November, regardless of party affiliation.
