LAPD investigating Pico-Union shootings, including one by police
Los Angeles police were investigating some shooting scenes in the Pico-Union area Monday morning, officials said, including one where an officer fired at a suspect. It was unclear whether anyone was struck by the pre-dawn gunfire, said LAPD Officer Matthew Ludwig. The first shooting was reported shortly before 1 a.m. at 11th Place and Union Avenue, Ludwig said. Officers assigned to the LAPD's Rampart Division responded to the area and found shell casings, he said.

Black Lives Matter activists charged in fracas at event
A judge denied a request by the Los Angeles city attorney's office for a protective order that would have prohibited two activists from coming within 50 feet of Mayor Eric Garcetti and LAPD Chief Charlie Beck. The activists still face misdemeanor charges related to a fracas last week at a city recreation center in South Los Angeles. Garcetti and Beck were meeting privately at the Mount Carmel Recreation Center with “financial backers” of the Summer Night Lights youth program Wednesday evening when Evan Bunch, 28, went into the room, Officer Jack Richter said.

Man Shot, Beaten by Home Intruder in Woodland Hills
A Woodland Hills man was hospitalized in critical condition after being beaten and shot by a home intruder Sunday night, police said. The man was inside his home in the 23000 block of Clarendon Street when an intruder pistol whipped him, then shot him at least twice in the abdomen, Los Angeles Police Department officials said.

Los Angeles Police Union Opposes Council Proposal to Require Locks on Handguns When Not in Use
Los Angeles city council members are debating controversial new gun law changes aimed at locking up handguns when they're not in use. According to the Los Angeles Times, the proposal would require city residents to either lock up handguns not being used or apply trigger locks to them. The proposal was authored by Councilman Paul Krekorian and is meant to protect children from gun accidents. But the plan has faced resistance from the local police officers union – the Los Angeles Police Protective League.

Grandson of slain Glendale couple hospitalized, delaying questioning by police
The sole publicly identified person of interest in the slaying of a Glendale couple found dead inside their home has been hospitalized with serious injuries, delaying detectives' efforts to interview him, police said Monday. Nathaniel Scheiern, the grandson of the couple found dead Sunday, was seriously injured in a one-vehicle car accident, Glendale police Sgt. Robert William said.

Caught on Camera: Man Hit With Tire Iron in Unprovoked Gas Station Attack
In "a random act of violence" that was captured on surveillance video, a man is seen being hit with a tire iron as he filled up his tank at an Orange County gas station, police said Monday. A 26-year-old man from Cypress was getting gas at the Mobil Gas Station located at 12240 Seal Beach Boulevard when he was attacked just after 10 p.m. Sunday, Seal Beach police said.

100-year-old Echo Park church damaged in fire that may have been arson
A 100-year-old building in Echo Park that served as a home for mostly ethnic religious groups was nearly destroyed in an early-morning fire that was intentionally set, officials said. Forerunners for Christ church had been hosting church services and religious groups at the building in the 1600 block of North Morton Avenue for seven years and had cemented itself as part of the community. So it came as a shock to some early Monday that the church had been targeted.

L.A. County D.A. Jackie Lacey to unveil details on wrongful-conviction unit
Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. Jackie Lacey will unveil details Monday about the creation of a unit dedicated to reviewing the integrity of convictions for people behind bars for serious or violent crimes. In putting together such a team of veteran prosecutors, the county D.A.'s office is joining a small but growing number of prosecutorial agencies around the country devoting resources to identifying innocent prisoners.
